Honesty in the Academic Environment
Introduction
Six year old Kylie is asked by her teacher “Why did you place the pencils in your backpack and take the pencils home?” Very unsure of the appropriate response, Kylie simply says “ I didn’t.” The teacher then goes over to the child’s book bag to take out the pencils that are accused of to be missing. Kylie then states that she must have accidently placed the pencil in the book bag after completing the end of the day assignment while packing up to go home. Regardless of the reason the action occurred, the teacher proceeds to have a thorough discussion regarding the topic of honesty and goes forth to discipline the child in school as well as contact her parent at home to make them aware of the situation and to recommend they generously speak to their student so that the behavior is not repeated again. In this paper I look to explore the different levels of honesty and evaluate if it is as black and white as it seems. When is it Lying
According to Merriam-Webster the definition of honesty is: 1. The quality or fact of being honest; uprightness and fairness. 2. Truthfulness, sincerity or frankness. 3. Freedom from deceit or fraud. The commitment required to realize these simple terms is more clearly implied in a second definition, drawn from Funk & Wagnails Standard Handbook of Synonyms, Antonyms and Prepositions: "One who is honest in the highest and fullest sense is scrupulously careful ^o adhere to all known truth and right even in thought." So how can you tell when something is true or not? According to Miller (2001), she states to let a story go by that is too fanciful to be real. More than likely, everyone knows it is not true, and you can all smile about it and maybe even joke about what a great story it is, and wouldn't it be fun if it were true! With this being said it is also important to let the student know that you, or the audience, realize that the story is not of truth. It would be wise to explain the differences of telling a story and being dishonest. Modeling the two differences within the academic environment would also be beneficial.

In Another Form
In terms of honest and dishonest, it’s important to point out that dishonesty can also be presented in the form of omission. Ahearne, (2011) gives an example of this in his recalling of an historical event. “ In early November 2010, Ban met with President Hu Jintao of China in Beijing. He discussed climate change, tensions on the Korean peninsula and peacekeeping. However, as the editors of The New York Times pointed out, "He was shamefully silent on one critical issue: China's poor human rights record and its unjustified imprisonment of Liu Xiaobo, the country's leading democracy activist and . . . winner of the Nobel Peace Prize." Ban has many responsibilities, but speaking truth to power is one of them, and in . Beijing he was unable to deliver.”
Conclusion
Cherrington (1993) reports that Child-rearing research has demonstrated the importance of teaching children general standards of right and wrong rather than specific rules. For example, taking candy from a store without paying for it is more than just a simple act of not paying for the candy. Children should learn that taking something without paying for it is shoplifting, which is a form of stealing; and stealing is a general form of behavior that is wrong. Therefore, allow teachable moments to become opportunities to tell lessons and to create understanding from a complex topic called honesty. In looking more closely at this topic, I created a full lesson plan that can be adapted into multiple grade levels to help teach children in the academic environment about the importance of honesty. The Lesson
HONESTY is telling the truth and being truthful. Honesty means you’re not lying or being dishonest about something. When you cheat on a test, you’re not being an honest person. Sometimes, being honest can be hard. You may be afraid that telling the truth may get you in trouble, but telling the truth shows that you’re an honest person that people trust. home. 2. Your dad says that if you pass your Math test you’ll get to go to your friend’s birthday party. Test day comes, but you didn’t study. Your classmate next to you studied, and you can see her test. If you copy her test, you’ll pass the Math test. What would you do?

It is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as “adherence to the facts; refusal to lie, steal or deceive in any way.” But, what does ‘honesty’ exactly mean? Some would say that honesty means not telling lies, not committing crimes or living a life according to what law says. Honesty is a reoccurring theme in many novels and plays. However, in the play, “Othello” by William Shakespeare, honesty works hand in hand with irony.
