Abstract Every person has the potential to become a victim or the abuser in the case of domestic violence. Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior directed toward a spouse, partner, boyfriend, girlfriend or family member. Studies show that many people involved in domestic violence have had some previous exposure to violence at home. For this discussion, my target audience is police officer involved in domestic violence. Officers are charged with protecting the rights of people and upholding the laws. However, as in Internal Affairs Investigator for Warshaw County Police Department, I have noticed an increasing trend in the number of officers involved in domestic violence. The department has 1000 sworn officers, in 2008; the number of domestic violence, cases involving police officers was 10. Most were minor complaints of threats and shoving. Of that 10 accused, 6 cases were unfounded and the officer was returned to duty. In 2009, the number of domestic violence cases involving police officers escalated to 25 cases of which 10 resulted in the officers being arrested and prosecuted for domestic violence.
