Vera Wang has spent more than 25 years in the fashion industry. She is currently 58 years old, with a husband and two adopted children. She still continues to work and has fulfilled many accomplishments that many designers will never come close to. Her business continues to grow, and she maintains her admiration and high level of regard for her elegant and glamorous clothing.
Wang was born June 27th, 1949 in New York City. After growing up in Manhattan, she attended ballet school and soon enrolled at Sarah Lawrence College. During her sophomore year at Sarah Lawrence, she studied abroad in Paris, but returned to the United States to finish her degree in art history.
Wang was an excellent figure skater and competed throughout her teens. She competed in the 1968 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She was actually featured in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” in the January 8, 1968 issue. When she did not make the Unites States Olympic team, she turned to her other passion, fashion. After graduating from college, she began working for Vogue magazine. Within a year, she was promoted to senior fashion editor, and kept this job for the next 15 years. Wang was the youngest ever to take this position, at age 23. In 1987, she left Vogue after being turned down for the Editor-in-Chief position to take a job as Design Director for women’s accessories at Ralph Lauren. In 1989, after two years of working for Ralph Lauren, Wang planned to marry her longtime boyfriend. She became frustrated with the limited selection of bridal wear, so she sketched her own dress and had it custom made for $10,000. The following year, Wang opened her own bridal boutique in the Carlyle Hotel in New York which featured her trademark bridal gowns. Wang is widely considered the most respected and influential wedding dress designer in the world because her collection has added style and modernity to wedding gowns. Wang’s dresses have been made for Jessica Simpson, Mariah Carey,...

Memo to Owner

...Restaurant. I am settling in well and look forward to a long prosperous relationship. I would like to take this opportunity to discuss with you some items of concern regarding the condition of the building. During this site inspection the following things caught my attention. * Old trees have grown so that their branches could become entangled in the power lines connected to the restaurant * Many of the windows have gaps possibly from the building settling * Water is not properly drained from the building. * Spider web pattern of cracks forming on the foundation. * The roof has tar paper that is pulled up in one section along with bird nests and tree branches. * There are also charred markings around the exhaust vent of the hood system. These are all potentially hazardous situations for our guest and staff. If we do not take action to fix these issues it will not only affect our bottom line but our ability to stay in business at all in this facility. The trees pose several problems. With the branches being so close to the power lines could potentially cause a fire if wind gust cause them to snap and clog up or wear down the gutter system. The roots could be clogging drains underground which could lead to expensive plumbing cost. The windows that have gaps in them are a major cause of our high energy cost. Water puddles up around the foundation because the current landscaping does not allow for the water to drain away from the building. On the roof the section...

Stable Island Storm Analysis

...Billy Tyne was the captain on the Andrea Gail’s final voyage. Billy was widely known for his ability to catch a large amount of fish on his voyages and was highly respected for this. His was an experienced fisherman and captain he was paid almost $20,000 for his catch. (Junger 13) The fishing season was coming to a close and Billy wanted to go out one last time to make up for his losses on his other trips. He brought along with him, Bobby Shatford, Dale Murphy, David Sullivan, Michael Moran, and Alfred Pierre. As it turned out he did manage to catch a lot of fish but at the same time his ice machine broke down, and he was forced to head back. At the same time two weather systems were forming and were on course to collide right in Billy’s route back to shore, the result would be devastating. When the weather was broadcasted at 11 to Billy, he had a choice. He could have attempted to go north to avoid the storm adding seven days to the trip, or continue and weather the storm. Tyne decides to continue toward home partially due to the broken ice machine and partially due to how long he had been at sea. When asked why Billy may have done this Tommy Barrie said, “He’d been gone well over a month he probably … kept heading home” (Junger 98) Entering the first storm, the Stable Island Storm would be an immediate drastic change, with no warning. Billy would start seeing 12 feet waves and experience incredibly fast winds which would, therefore, keep raising the wave height. The...

Consumer Behavior

...product. The consumer can be motivated by the desire to feel a certain way. For example, my most recent purchase was a winter coat. After the arctic temperatures we had in the Western New York area over the last few days, I decided it was time to invest in a nice warm winter jacket. I first started to look online then I visited a few stores but I didn’t find anything I really liked. If the consumption process was as simple as finding a product that meets my need, any warm winter jacket would have satisfied my need. Nevertheless, there I was walking around at Macy’s, I didn’t have anything particular in mind, I was simply looking around. Suddenly, on a mannequin, I see a beautiful grey button up hooded jacket with white fur trim around the hood. The lining was this stunning soft pink. When I looked through the racks, as you can imagine, I was delighted to see they had my size. The price didn’t even matter. I didn’t simply need a jacket anymore, I wanted that jacket. The main psychological process influencing my purchase was my concept of self. Because a jacket is something that I am going to wear every day during the winter season, it became part of my extended...

Car Accident

...My First Car Accident Disappointment, disbelief and fear filled my mind as I lie on my side, sandwiched between the cold, soft dirt and the hot, slick metal of the car. The weight of the car pressed down on the lower half of my body with monster force. It did not hurt, my body was numb. All I could feel was the car hood's mass stamping my body father and farther into the ground. My lungs felt pinched shut and air would neither enter nor escape them. My mind was buzzing. What had just happened? In the distance, on that cursed road, I saw cars driving by completely unaware of what happened, how I felt. I tried to yell but my voice was unheard. All I could do was wait. Wait for someone to help me or wait to die. The third maddening buzz of my alarm woke me as I groggily slid out of bed to the shower. It was the start of another routine morning, or so I thought. I took a shower, quarreled with my sister over which clothes she should wear for that day and finished getting myself ready. All of this took a little longer than usual, not a surprise, so we were running late. We hopped into the interior of my sleek, white Thunderbird and made our way to school. With music blasting, voices singing and talking, it was another typical ride to school with my sister. Because of our belated departure, I went fast, too fast. We started down the first road to our destination. This road is about three miles long and filled with little hills. As we broke the top of one of the small, blind...

Raphy was on a winning streak. After each match his opponent made an eek! Plus they couldn’t even speak. There’s only one word that he would say. WORD! I’m in the backstage with the boyz n da hood. Rehearsing their lines like I knew they would. Making their hoodies look nice and good. With a ching, a snap, and a cracka lack. I’m on the stage it’s crystal clear. Everyone is chugging their beer. When are they gonna start to cheer. Doesn’t matter, just listen up. Randy is making his way to the stage. His shoes and his shirt are very light beige. He stares at me as if in a rage. He can’t resist, and then you hear him say… “Raphy you’re as repulsive as a rat!” “Well Randy you’re as idle as a cat!” “At least I don’t play with barbies on the mat!” Raphy couldn’t take it anymore. Spurting out, all the words that he could. “Randy you’re an insult to the hood.” “Plus you can’t lift a piece of wood.” “So what do I have to worry about?” The audience went wild. But Randy looked mild. The audience filed. To carry Raphy...

Short Story: The Day Of The C-Rhyme

...The day of the c-rhyme was a tragedy indeed. There were sheep in the meadow, cows in the corn, and various other barnyard animals running amok. When it was realized that this chaos came from the Little Blue Boy(AKA LBB) not blowing his horn, a thorough search of the barn was executed. A few minutes later, LBB was found, and the reason he failed to blow his horn was revealed; he had been murdered. As soon as this happened, detective G.Udd.Guy was called in. When he arrived, his first action was to examine the haystack LBB was under. After searching in the yellow straw for a long time, Guy was able to locate a needle in the haystack(amazingly). He then went on to inspect the needle. After doing so, he realized its particular size and shape was sold by only one nearby store. After arriving to the awesome store, Guy came to the manager. The manager asked what was going on and Guy responded, telling him that he found one of the Awesome Store’s needles near the body of the now-dead LBB. Guy then questioned the manager about the any recently sold needles of the particular type found in the haystack. After hearing that the needle was a haystack needle, the manger remembered that a peculiar person wearing a cloak had purchased one of the thin haystack needles (needles specifically made for holding haystacks together) sold at the Awesome Store. The name was unknown, but the manager recalled that the cloaked person had asked about where one would go to buy a coffin, though the...

Leadership

...Leadership David Berwanger Central Texas College Leadership Introduction The U.S. Army has established the largest active-duty armored post at Fort Hood. It was a major hub for troops deploying to or returning from military service in Iraq and Afghanistan. Fort Hood is 100 miles (160 km) south of Dallas-Fort Worth, and near the town of Killeen. Its citizens deal with violence on their overseas missions. They don't ordinarily expect to encounter carnage in their home base, which lies in the pleasant hill-and-lake country of central Texas. Carnage is just what transpired on Nov. 5, 2009. The Fort Hood shooting was believed to be one of the worst mass shootings ever on a military base in the U.S.; a gunman killed 13 people and wounded some three dozen others (Bergen, 2011). The shooter was a 39-year-old military psychiatrist and was taken into custody after being wounded by base police. Officials identified him as Major Nidal Malik Hasan, a devout adherent of Islam. The incident triggered sharp debate on whether the shooter was a deranged individual, a terrorist, or perhaps both and whether authorities had paid sufficient attention to warning signs in his behavior that might have enabled them to prevent the tragedy (McCullough, 2011). This paper explores the leadership attributes displayed by the officials after the massacre happening. Part 1 Introduction to Crisis Situation On November 5, 2009 at Fort Hood, Texas, U.S. Army psychiatrist Major...

History of Early Settlers in Hood River

...Hood River Early Settlers Joe Correa ANTH 310 Week Nine Essay March 11, 2012 Words: 1535 Hood River Early Settlers In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. So goes the old teaching poem goes. Three hundred years later, in 1792, Lt. William Broughton explored the Columbia River. He is credited for naming the geography along the Columbia River. Under President Thomas Jefferson’s instructions, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark undertook the further exploration of the Columbia River working from the East to the West, ending where Lt. Broughton had started. The map from the British gave them an idea of what to expect. Thirteen years later, Lewis and Clark would see the same landscape, make a new map, and give some of the places that Lt. Broughton had already named new names. On October 29, 1805, Lewis and Clark discovered a stream on the south banks of the Columbia and called it the Labeasche River after one of their members, Private Francois Labiche. It is near this glacial river that the current site of Hood River is found. The river itself has changed names twice to become Hood River. It was called Dog River for a while after some pioneers became stranded here and had to eat a dog for sustenance. It was again changed to Hood River with time and the name Dog River given to a small stream upriver. The name Hood being from the mountain that was given the name by Lt. Broughton honoring Lord Hood of the British Admiralty. The area first appears on a map...

Robin Hood Analysis

...1. What problems does Robin Hood have? What issues need to be addressed? Robin Hood has a few weaknesses that he needs to deal with currently. The biggest problem that I see is that his strategy for business needs to be re-evaluated. When he first started his quest he was robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. This strategy and vision worked well for Robin Hood when he was able to give to the poor and sustain his men with the money he took from the rich. As the numbers of his men increased he needed more money and goods to sustain them. As this need has arisen so has the difficulty of robbing. His business has changed, as those traveling through the forest were getting smarter and not carrying as much gold and coin. The rich are also taking a different further route around the forest causing Robin Hoods men to have to travel further or miss the travelers all together. Robin Hood also had the problem of his men being resistant to change. They didn’t see the big picture of why the business had to change. Robin Hood should include all of his top men in the decision process of what their new vision should be. This will help aid the men by including their core values into the vision and mission of the group. Robin Hood needs a well-communicated strategic vision. Robin Hood’s strategy must change because of the changing choices his business has taken and adapting to the new conditions around him. Robin Hood needs to make sure that his new strategy becomes a realized...
