2AbstractUsing restorative justice in schools is s growing tread compared to other ways to punish students for negative behavior. In the Native American culture it is important to make a negative consequence mendedand to give back and make a wrong decision right and to learn not only a culturalact but also to respect others in a spiritual way.
3Restorative justice is a growing alternative to other types of punishments in schools that involves culture. In the area that we live in, Northern California, Humboldt County we are rich with Native American culture which is being preserved through the local tribes in our area. Hoopa High is the only mainstream high school in our area and the population at the high school is around 250 students. The emphasis on involving the school community in resolving conflicts is predicated on the notion that those in the community want to repair harm and that they have the skills and the opportunities to do so. It is useful to think of a whole school approach as one that not only repairs harm in the event of conflict and inappropriate behavior but also one that builds and nurtures relationship and community(Johnston, 2002). The Indigenous philosophy, with a focus on restoration, seeks to harmonize the underlying conflict and restore balance to the individuals affected and the community at large. Under this system, the judiciary works to restore relationships and heal lives. One of the primary goals of this system is reintegration into the community (Mallon 2013). The data suggests in 2008-2013 the overall decrease in suspensions is 61%, decreased office referrals 90%. Restorative offers the promise to transform teacher-student relationships and achieve equity in school discipline, thereby narrowing the racial discipline gap, according to a study led by Anne Gregory of Rutgers University. Classrooms with a high level of restorative practices implementation (High RP) had fewer disciplinary referrals for defiance and misconduct compared to classrooms with a low level of implementation (Low RP), over the 2011–2012 school …show more content…
I think that using the teachers to collaborate with about the students in the classrooms and what sort of chore would be fitting for the act that the student committed. The outreach consultant could be used to transport the students to and from the elder’s homes. The social worker will gather a list of elders in the community that would be willing to have the students come and help them with their chores around the house. The social worker will sit with the elder and get a list of chores that they would like to have done around their home. The school board member would be on the team as a type of liaison to report back to the school board how the program is going. The cultural leaderswill be usedto come up with a list of items that would be appropriate for the students to do as chores for the elders. The tribal court judge will be used in cases that the student has been cited or referred to tribal court for negative actions. School resource officer will be in place to issue citations if the suspension rises to the level of court interaction.The Behavioral Health specialists will also be an outside resources for mental health or substance abuse counseling.Lastly, the parents to sign consent forms for the students to participate in the restorative justice program helping
