...Religion is Hope Religion, to most people of the world, is the only saving grace in their life, because religion is the equalizer among peoples. Therefore, in the eyes of God, it does not matter if his followers are black, white, destitute, affluent, Christian, or other they are just people to God; now, nonetheless, to receive salvation or not is another matter. In Cry, the Beloved Country, Paton makes it clear that religion is hope. Religion gives the people a sense of salvation, redemption, or purpose, and salvation being the leading factor in Christianity, this is very important. Salvation is the deliverance from sin and consequence, and in the novel, salvation is everything to a person who has nothing. Religion is important to the story, because of Christian values and faith help characters endure their suffering, guide the characters into decent lives, promote hope for the future, and gives the people a purpose. First, for a society like the Africans, who during this era of segregation and oppression suffer significantly, it is important to have a faith in which their suffering is nothing but a trial in this life. For in the Christian faith, God makes it clear that he...

...John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men In John Steinbeck's classic novella, Of Mice and Men, one of the predominant themes that govern the story and characters in the book is friendship. One of the ways in which friendship plays a large role is in the area of mercy killing, which affects the main characters as well as the supporting ones. The two major mercy killings that occur in the book are those of Carlson's killing of Candy's old dog, and of George's killing of Lennie. In both of these examples, the killer kills the other out of mercy and love, not for the usual motives of hatred, rage, anger, etc. The killing of Candy's dog is an excellent example of mercy killing in the aforesaid novella. Candy's dog was in terrible condition, and it could barely be said that the ratty old thing was even alive. It stunk like a dozen skunks, was nearly blind, could barely hear, had arthritis that was so bad, the old mutt couldn't sit down, had no quality of life, and probably had urinary and bowel problems, a miserable condition that is almost assured in old dogs. This instance of mercy killing, however, was more driven by peer pressure than the typical case of mercy killing. When someone kills another loved one out of mercy, it is normally done to put the afflicted one out of their misery, torment, anguish, distress, etc. The other ranch hands thought that the dog reeked more than any of its other conditions, which was the only one that they, too, could experience. Candy's dog loved its master...

...Portia’s speech “The mercy speech” In this famous speech, Portia is dressed as a doctor of law, and has taken the identity of a young lawyer named “Balthazar” She tries to plead with the Jew (Shylock) to have mercy on Antonio, however she says that mercy cannot be forced, that it must come freely, and compares it to a drop of rain falling from the sky. She explains to Shylock, that mercy is something so beautiful and pure that it is really its own reward, she goes on to say that mercy is not only a blessing on the person receiving it, but also a blessing on he who shows mercy. Portia then tries to convince Shylock that it is a mighty symbol that could be shared by him and king’s alike, that mercy suits a king even better than his crown. This is something very powerful to say, as a king’s crown is the very symbol of his power and respect. She explains the power of the king’s sceptre, that it is the symbol of his authority over all, that it is the most prized symbol of kings, that it is so special it leaves all in awe of the monarch’s strength and authority. However she adds that mercy is in itself more powerful even than this awesome symbol of strength. She says that mercy is something cherished by all king’s and that it is the one true symbol of strength. By saying all of this she hopes to give Shylock the impression that he will show true inner strength and will be respected just by showing mercy. She then goes a level above that of kings, by saying that it is an attribute...

...Mercy Mercy is a form of forgiveness towards someone or something. Many people show mercy towards others but what they don’t know is that mercy can have a big impact on a their life. To be truthful I have received mercy from many people as well as given mercy to many. An example of me giving mercy to someone is when I showed mercy to my friend, Connor. I had been friends with Connor since the fourth grade. I would hang out with him just about every day, we were that close of friends. But when we switched from elementary school to middle school in 6th grade, things changed. Connor was a kid who loved to play video games as well as go on the computer. He would practically spend just about every hour of the day playing video games when not in...

...What qualities mark a just society? There are a number of different thing that would answer this question. Such as, mercy, unconditional love, forgiveness, hope, covenant love, justice, and thanks to God. ...The Applause of Heaven The Applause of Heaven easily becomes a step by step description of how to rebuild the believer’s heart. God is relentlessly in pursuit of his children and He desires to welcome them home with applause. Through the Beatitudes, Lucado hopes to convey this message to rekindle the love inside God’s children. Within the first couple of chapters, Lucado immediately introduces the bi-product of Christ’s reconstruction of the believer’s heart. He begins his series of insights by introducing the idea of the Sacred Delight. This Sacred Delight is a holy joy that comes from God and is the gift received when a person surrenders everything they have come to know and cherish. Lucado recognizes this shift and says it starts with, “a demolition of the old structure and a creation of the anew,” and explicitly interjects that, “the more radical the change, the greater the joy. And it’s worth every effort, for this is the joy of God,” (Lucado, p12). Lucado breaks down what the idea of the Sacred Delight means. He says, “Sacred Delight is good news coming through the back door of [one’s own] heart. It’s what [one had] always dreamed but never expected. It’s the too-good-to-be-true coming true,” (Lucado, p10). Lucado is an excellent narrator and uses his words to truly convey an idea in a multitude of ways. He even goes further than just simple illustrations to explain what makes this Sacred Delight so joyful. “It is sacred because only God can grant it. It is...

...Hospitals are being squeezed by managed care companies that are having their own financial troubles. One consequence is the closing of hospitals. MERCY HOSPITAL–DETROIT’S STRUGGLE The east side of Detroit is among the most troubled urban areas in the United States, struggling with a multitude of social and economic challenges.Mercy HospitalDetroit was an important anchor in this neighborhood, not only providing access to healthcare, but also security, employment, leadership, and a place for social interaction. It relied heavily on Medicare, Medicaid, and other government sources for its business—nearly 80 percent of its total admissions. In the early to mid-1990s,Mercy Hospital–Detroit found it increasingly difficult to maintain its fiscal health;operating losses were supplemented by the hospital’s parent company,Mercy Health Services (MHS).1Then,in 1997,the Balanced Budget Reconciliation Act severely reduced Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements. The already struggling hospital was devastated by the cuts.Losses of $1.5 million per month began to mount. The federal and state funding cuts similarly affected operating margins at Mercy’s other hospitals. The MHS Board was faced with system-wide financial constraints that put the system’s bond rating at risk.Operating losses at Mercy Hospital–Detroit totaled nearly $100 million from 1990–2000. In the hope of finding a buyer,a series of...

Also I was drawn to certain areas of service in my church rather than others. My top two gifts are evangelism and showing mercy. I agree with both these results completely. Of course I have done it more subtle than yelling. Perhaps, Free coffee and donuts on a cold morning downtown. My second highest gift is showing mercy. This is also an accurate gift. ...Jesus and Buddha are founders of two of the largest religions in the world. Both of them desire of making the world better, letting people love together, and giving happiness to all the people in the world. However, Christianity unlike Buddhism is unique in that it strips us of our self-righteousness by exposing our sinful nature, and causes us to see that our only hope is for God to reach down to us in mercy. Buddhism is the belief system of those who follow Buddha, the Enlightened One. It was founded as a form of atheism. It is the world’s fourth largest religion. The founder of Buddhism was Siddhartha Gautama, a prince from northern India near modern Nepal who lived about 563–483 B.C. It is the world’s fourth largest religion; with adherents of 613 million worldwide and one million in the United States. Buddhists regard the United States as a prime mission field, and the number of Buddhists in this country is growing rapidly due to an increase in Asian immigration, endorsement by celebrities such as Tina Turner and Richard Gere, and use in major movies such as Siddhartha, The Little Buddha, and What’s Love Got to Do with It? Buddhism is related to the New Age Movement and may to some extent be driving it. Certainly Buddhist growth is benefiting from the influence of New Age thought on American life. Buddhism is an impersonal religion of self-perfection, the end of which is death, not life. The Buddhist belief system is in the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold...

...Have you ever really thought about a murder scene or a murderer as being forgivable? Most people that have common sense may agree that the answer to this is, “no, murder is unforgivable!” However, there are very few incidents where people have shown great mercy to a murderer who has killed a greatly loved family member or friend. A great example is the story of the woman named Mary Johnson, who forgave the man who shot her one and only son. Not only did this woman forgive him, but she told him to move in next door to her in her apartment building! As a teenager in Minneapolis, Israel was involved with gangs, drugs, and violence. In February 1993, at a friend’s party, Oshea Israel got into a fight with Laramiun Byrd, who was only twenty years old, and shot him in the head. Oshea is now 34. He finished serving his prison sentence for murder about a year and a half ago. His prison sentence was twenty-five years....
