...In Dante’s Inferno, there are nine circles of Hell. But there is this outer layer right before the first circle, where the souls are rejected by both Heaven and Hell. After reading the famous words, “Abandon every hope, all you who enter,” (p.14 line 9) Dante and Virgil enter this lonely land of indecisive souls. To me, this is the worst layer of Hell. There is so many horrid things within this layer of Hell and throughout this paper I will argue why I think this is the worst part of Hell. The opening of Canto III starts with bold-capitalized words on a sign at the gates of Hell. This sign is very dark and as Dante says the words are “cruel.” As Dante and Virgil walk past through the gates they enter the place of the rejected souls. Souls of...

...bring us laughter, tears, anger, and they may even give us a little hope in humanity. People will occasionally say that they wish they could forget what has happened to them to bring them misery. In my opinion, there is nothing in my life that would make me want to change anything that has happened even in the worst times. I also feel as if there is nothing in American history that we should change. I realize the fact that much of this nation’s history has brought great grief, but I believe that we have learned from our past mistakes. These past mistakes have made this nation into the great nation that it is today. Hope is all I can think about whenever I think about America. Hope for all people, no matter what race, size, language, or nationally. Hope that we grow as a nation, and can all come together to be the great Americans that we are. America has had some of the greatest history. Some you can’t...

...is now recognized as. Living life as an outsider, her poems are written from a perspective we are not used to seeing in our popular culture. Even so, her works contain such themes as human nature/behavior, independence, the meaning of life, and optimism in a grim world. After reading and studying Emily Dickinson's works I have noticed many similarities between her beliefs and mine. I believe that most people would have to agree she was far more intelligent than anybody would have even considered and that one comes to understand our world better after contemplating her works. The most numerous type of poem that Dickinson wrote was that which dealt with human nature. In "Success is counted Sweetest," she points out that the people who can truly enjoy success are those who have felt the pain of failure. Most of the pleasure of success comes from subconsciously knowing that since you have succeeded you don't have to feel the pain of failure. Throughout my life, especially in regard to athletics, I have won many times in big situations and lost many times in big situations. Every time I've won, without really thinking about what I was doing, and only for a very brief time, I've looked at my opponent and pitied them for having to go through the pain of losing. Immediately following this the victory felt much sweeter. Consequently, every time I've lost, I imagined what it would have felt like to have won, that's when the real pain hit. What I think Dickinson could also have had in...

...The greatest and also the worst To myself, “Death of a salesman” is a story mainly about hope and dream. The dream in the play is a personal dream, but it has a close relationship with American dream, because it is a part of American dream, it reflects American dream in some certain ways from an ordinary person—a salesman and his family. Hope is the most important factor in the dream through out the whole play. Hope, in most cases, is the greatest thing in the world which brings people happiness, courage and power. On the other, hope can sometimes be the worst thing which destroy a person’s life, just like our main character—Willy, in the play “Death of a salesman”. The temporary hope that Biff gives to Willy and also Willy puts all his expectations into—big business, successful businessman for Biff, these all finally destroy Willy’s life and make his whole life become a tragedy. The profession of the main character—Willy, a salesman is by no means a coincidence for Arthur Miller. Salesman is the most representative job for trading in hope, they always transfer hope from today to tomorrow, they struggle in a possibility, in that uncertain hope that tomorrow will be better, tomorrow I will sell more, then I can make a fortune, I can make a big deal. But there is always a gap between reality and dream. Actually in the play, Willy knows that he can never be a successful salesman, can never make a big deal, can never start a business at his age anymore, but he just refused to...

In Life As We Knew It, there are many themes that can be seen throughout the story of survival, love, and hope. The theme of Life As We Knew It is, “Things will get better in time,” because comfort comes with hope, hope of better times motivates people, and the word believes in better times, and without hope, the world is dead. Following the asteroid hitting the Moon, everyone’s world began to dissolve, though hope gave them comfort knowing better times...

...Driving in the winter and driving in the summer have many differences and one thing in common. The main differences revolve around weather, visual clarity, and animals. The single thing that they have in common is the fact that there are hazards, and when preparing to drive on the roads no matter what season, it is important to hope for the best, prepare for the worst, and follow all the laws of the road. When Mother Nature takes her course there is no way to fully predict the outcome. Before setting out on the road whether it be summer or winter, it is important to check the forecast, that way you can get somewhat of an understanding as to what you may or may not have to travel through. In the winter the bitter cold can cause a lot of hazards...

...During the time of World War II there were two types of camps made during this time. One was Internment camps for Japanese Americans and another was Concentration camps made for Jews. Internment camps may have been a harsh but they were not as bad as concentration camps. In Internment camps they wouldn't beat you for making a mistake, they let people go to school, and had good portions of meals. On the other hand, concentration camps made the prisoners work in terrible conditions, provided insignificant living conditions, and would beat and kill the Jews for no reason. Working in the concentration camp were pretty bad if you were a prisoner. The SS officer would never give any pity for the young, elderly, woman, or man. The prisoners would have to work all day till the break of dawn, in all types of weather. Let it be cold or hot, all they would have were their striped cloths. The things they worked on were war efforts, expansion of the camp and new building for the camp....

...Women's equality in Afghanistan The soviet union intruded in on Afghanistan in 1979 to mess with the government , sparking a ten year war between Mujahideen Guerilla fighters and the Soviet Union. When the Soviet Union did not back out there was a bloody civil war. “ For Afghan women, this was the start of the worst part of their lives,” said historian Scott Levi in the September 2009 issue of Origins. “ During the Afghan war there were little terms of that rule of law: Men died in large groups, widows were left to beg, rape was also very common, and women that were very low with hope left committed suicide” Taliban came to rule in 1996, enforcing strict laws that applied everywhere. Most laws were towards women such as, women were not allowed to work, to go to school, or even appear in public without a male escort. Women in Afghanistan...

...Resorts’ traditional lines of business has its own best and worst selling products. However the data varies at different period of the year. The company cannot determine vital information such as which customers are golfing and staying at the hotel or which customers are staying at the hotel and not golfing. For example, the three details that the customer Diego Titus ( 1) stayed four nights at an Ian Resorts’ managed hotel, ( 2) golfed three days, and ( 3) took an all- day spa treatment the first day are discrete facts housed in separate systems. Ian Resorts hopes that by using data warehousing technology to integrate its data, the next time Diego reserves lodging for another trip, sales associates may ask him if he would like to book a spa treatment as well, and even if he would like the same masseuse that he had on his prior trip. ...Even in the worst of conditions for example in the text Viktor talks about the men who would go tent to tent comforting people and giving their last piece of bread away. They found their meaning in life to help people even if that involved them starving as long as they were helping improve someone else’s situation it gave their life meaning. This idea of meaning turned into Logotherapy helping people find a meaning in life. Pivotal Juncture The pivotal juncture in the book to me was Viktors conversation with the senior block warden. During this conversation the warden told Viktor about a dream he had of a voice asking him to ask any question he desired. His question was when would the camp be liberated and the voice answered “March thirtieth”. That man still had hope and as soon as march 29th came the man became very ill. On march 30th the day he was told he would be liberated in his dream he died. This goes along with Logotherapys idea of man needing a meaning in life you need something to look towards in order to properly function. When this man lost his final hope for a future his body gave...

...and shows what great strength parents have and what they instill in us as children. Inspiration is powerful and has the ability to really shape a person's life. After the accident, when Lindsay was stable and set up in the hospital, Allen and his partner went to visit every chance they had. In doing this, Allen, Lindsay, and Lindsay’s family all became really close. There was a bond formed the day Allen arrived on the scene, which he describes as, “the thing that makes me do what I do” (Callings 137). Years later, Allen and Lindsay are incredibly close and consider each other family. The second lesson learned in this story was the importance of relationships and how they can bring a sense of meaning and togetherness to even the worst situations. ...dictator of Germany. He was a very charismatic man, which was beneficial to his goal to have people support his desire to rid Germany of all “undesirable” people. Under his direction and with the aid of his followers, Hitler was successful in “exterminating” millions of non-Germans and non-Christians in a dark segment of history called the Holocaust. Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, Elie Wiesel’s Night, and Gerda Weissmann’s recollections in One Survivor Remembers center around events which took place before and during World War II. These three titles observe how the human spirit is able to respond to unimaginable horrors and unspeakable situations with an indomitable inner strength, enduring hope, and creative defenses. Even in the worst circumstances, the human spirit will not surrender. In the 1940 time era, a person who was not German or Christian was tortured in many devastating and heart-wrenching ways. Slowly, everything was taken from these people, particularly the Jews. Initially, those who did not match the “perfect” identity were forced from their homes with a small amount of personal documents and other belongings and were compelled to live in overcrowded and filthy conditions in ghettos. Their towns were destroyed, the houses of worship were burned, and the businesses were looted. Later, families were separated and sent to concentration camps where individuals were divided into groups. The people who were younger and stronger were sent to slave labor camps while the older...

...and even well-being. But it can also create friendship and amplify hope. A quote from Vince Lombardi Jr. summarises those messages: “The quality of a man's life is in direct proportion to his commitment to excellence, regardless of his chosen field of endeavor [sic].” e novel “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” (2010) page 49-51 written by Sherman Alexie, the narrator Arnold Spirit also known as Junior claims that Indians were worst of times because they have forgotten how to dream and hope while the whites are best of times because they have full of hope which is what makes things happen. The Indians never care to dream because they are surrounded by hopelessness, they have forgotten how to dream and hope. But the Reardan kids who represent the whites, they dared to dream because they were surrounded by beauty, they were smart, magnificent and ambitious. Although sometimes Arnold also lies and plays some tricks, he works hard to prove himself, to gain respect and to make friends. It’s a big challenge, but well worth the effort. On the other hand, the internal conflict is the difficulties of creating Arnold’s own autonomy while being faithful to his tribe. Arnold refuses to give up but at the cost of losing his best friend and being considered to betray his tribe. I don’t think this conflict can be resolved only through Arnold’s hard work; it also relies on others’ understanding. I’ll never forget what Rowdy says to Arnold, “You’re an old-time nomad...
