According to Google, there are roughly 250,000 words in the English language. Hope, however, is one of the most loaded of them all. Even in the simplest situations, hope is relied on the most: walking to the fridge in the morning in hopes of finding some milk or driving through town hoping that the stop light will be green. Throughout our lives, people ask us what our hopes are for our futures, but honestly, with everything that has been going on in our world recently, it does not look like there is much hope for the future. The history of this country is very important. In order to look forward, citizens need to learn from it and grow into the country that many people see as wonderful by respecting each other, working toward goals, and essentially creating peace. …show more content…
Citizens need to acknowledge the fact that, yes, they have freedom of speech, but so does everyone else living in this great country. With that being said, it seems like the news and social media have been overtaken by the “Take a Knee” demonstration in which some NFL players are partaking. Of course, every individual is going to have a different opinion on this, but the reality of it is, the Constitution says that “You should stand and put your right hand over your heart.” The key word here is should, which stops just shy of shall or must. Consequently, as controversial as it may be, this act is not

Reflective Essay: There Is Nothing In American History

...Our past forms us into the human beings that we are today. Without the past what do we have ? Memories bring us laughter, tears, anger, and they may even give us a little hope in humanity. People will occasionally say that they wish they could forget what has happened to them to bring them misery. In my opinion, there is nothing in my life that would make me want to change anything that has happened even in the worst times. I also feel as if there is nothing in American history that we should change. I realize the fact that much of this nation’s history has brought great grief, but I believe that we have learned from our past mistakes. These past mistakes have made this nation into the great nation that it is today. Hope is all I can think about whenever I think about America. Hope for all people, no matter what race, size, language, or nationally. Hope that we grow as a nation, and can all come together to be the great Americans that we are. America has had some of the greatest history. Some you can’t...

Life

...lives but isn't a doctor. He has bullet proof protection but don't confuse him for the wimpy FBI. Fighting for the red, white, and blue he is living symbol for freedom, but don't confuse him with the president. Captain America- despite him being a super soldier- provides idealistic life and morality: he is a strong role model for americans and always views things on the bright side, while being a great leader. He is not only the best superhero ever but gives hope to everyone and provides a positive message on never giving up. He started from the bottom of the pit and never gave up; he became the best “man” he could, even though he had a little help from science. Transforming his life to be accepted, volunteering to become a super soldier, accepting his new reality, Captain America never gives up. People look up to him because he started off not accepted by societies view; he was a scrawny malnourished man that got rejected multiple times. Even though he had the help of military science, the olympic athlete abilities and physical attractiveness gave people hope that if they never give up they can succeed at anything they want. He is still human though. “ But we are also human beings, with feelings and emotions.” (page 59 Our Superhero Ourself) says Captain America, this shows people that even though he has this special ability he can relate to how humans feel and how tough it is to over come that specific standard. People can relate to him after the science experiment just as much...

Ethos In Anna Quindlen's A Quilt Of A Country

...It is often argued that the American dream is dead, but America is still thriving, despite the negativity surrounding it. Time and time again, America has accomplished feats that should be impossible. America succeeds as an “improbable idea” as demonstrated through captivating ethos in A Quilt of a Country and inspiring pathos in George Washington Crossing the Delaware which depict America’s hope. In the article A Quilt of a Country by Anna Quindlen, ethos is used to portray how Americans have hope even when it seems useless. Despite all the abominable events occurring in the world, the “American psyche” (Quindlen, paragraph 7) and “patriotism” (paragraph 8) are still thriving. The author begins the article by providing examples of particularly...

America the Beautiful

...“Let America Be America Again” is a poem not about just one group of people, but about African Americans, immigrants, poor white people, American Indians, and any and all groups who have been left out. When Mr. Hughes says: “I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart, I am the Negro bearing slavery’s scars. I am the red man driven from the land, I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek— And finding only the same old stupid plan Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak.” (Hughes 697) He speaking is for everyone, except the rich and privileged as we see in the line that says: Of profit, power, gain, of grab the land! Of grab the gold! Of grab the ways of satisfying need! Of work the men! Of take the pay! Of owning everything for one’s own greed (Hughes 697) It is important for us all to remember this land is for everyone, not just the privileged. Reading this poem and passing it on to others is a good way to remember what this country initially stood for and what most people are still fighting for. At one time America stood for liberty, equality, and the land of the free. When Mr. Hughes states “Let it be the dream it used to be” and “America never was America to me” we understand that he never has felt America was equal or free, but we also see that Mr. Hughes wants America to fulfill the promises of freedom, liberty, and equality. I enjoyed this part of the poem because it reminded me of why people came to this country and still come to this country...

American Dream in Pop Culture

...American Dream As a Myth Erica Rideout HUMN240-F1WW Professor Deborah Rosenstock July 7, 2012 The myth of the American Dream does not have to be taught or learned. Growing up in America, it is imbedded in our minds at a young age that America has it all. American is the land of opportunity and allows its citizens to work hard and gain an uncapped amount of success. However, it is more apparent that this “dream” has transformed into a myth over the several years since its creation. Once upon a time, America was seen as the place to gain opportunity and success. However, as times continue to change, this vision of the dream continues to slip out of American’s hands and more into the mind as a myth. The major component of the myth of the American Dream is a simple one. America is the land of the free and home of the brave. Our American ancestors have fought for freedom and gained it allowing fellow Americans endless opportunities that can lead to great success. These opportunities do not just end with Americans; they are extended to all nationalities that come to America with hopes of living the so called American Dream. Although the American Dream may just be a myth, it definitely gives people hope. Most times, that hope is enough to lead to the drive and determination necessary to reach some level of the American Dream. There are several artifacts that help display the myth of the American Dream. Two artifacts that I have chosen are relevant to views...

American Literature

...for America now. We need to understand the building blocks of our world today, so we don’t make the same mistakes that we did from the past. Everyone should learn from the early settlers mistakes and not also repeat them. In politics people learn from histories mistakes so they will not get overturned and there will not be any civil wars. The role of literature in understanding the origins of American ideology is how freedom of religion, economic struggle, and the government is the same from 200 years ago to the present day. The economy 200 years ago would fluctuate from high to low just how it fluctuates now; people traded and tried anything to make a profit and sometimes the Europeans would give the Indians an unfair trade, just like how people today are capitalists in America and the bosses will do anything to increase their profits even if that gives the workers a lower wage for the same job. When people discover new things they are likely to make money off their discovery. “While the ships stayed, our allowance was somewhat bettered by a daily proportion of biscuit, which the sailers would pilfer to sell, give, or exchange with us, for money, sassafras, furs, or love” (Smith 67). Indians and Europeans are able to make profit off goods that the other group doesn’t make. Just like in our society today we buy China’s products that we don’t make and they buy ours that they don’t make. The foundation of our government elected officials is the government we had in America 200...

Even though the news often depicts a deep pessimism toward the future of America with divisions in our government, I believe the America future is still bright and full of potential. Why Do Immigrants Follow The Statue Of Liberty?

...The Statue of Liberty is one of the most unmistakable landmarks of the United States of America. From its once gleaming copper to its welcoming presence surrounding Ellis Island, our beloved Lady Liberty has greeted immigrants since 1885. If one has ever been to the Statue of Liberty, they probably know that at the bottom is a poem. This poem, or sonnet, contains a beautiful message about immigrants arriving in America. It states, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” As a country, it is important to follow the words we were founded on. America should continue to follow the words stated at the base of the Statue of Liberty because it represents the country’s establishment, it is a symbol of hope to the incoming...
