...David Almond’s novel Skellig is a world of magical realism that explores Michael’s life as he goes through many changes. The story follows Michael’s journey as he explores freedom, hope and perseverance, and adapts to change. Countless key themes can be interpreted within this perplexing novel; including freedom, evolution and persistence. These themes are mostly mentioned indirectly throughout the text and are symbolised by different motifs; for instance, feathers, birds, and wings are linked to freedom. The topic of evolution is also conveyed to show parallels between Michael’s life and adapting to change. Hope and perseverance is another theme tackled in the text and shows that even through the hard times, Michael hopes and is persistent. Within Skellig, freedom is discussed as an important theme interconnecting the characters’ lives. Freedom is portrayed as a motif connecting with birds and wings. In some ways, it connects with the stone motif showing that someone or something is trapped and needs to be set free. In the storyline, Michael learns more about himself and his ability to be free, with guidance from Skellig, Mina and his parents along the way. It is also projected that Michael and...

...yet sophisticated house? Well in this paper you will find out about the histoty of the house, the location of the house, the tunnel system under the house, the layout of the house, the staff who serve in the house, the family of Donald J Trump, and the tourism and the relations of the house. Many things happened back then but let's focus on the white house first. Like I said it was built in the year of 1792 and lucky president John Adams was the first president to live in the white house. The white house provides no damage photo’s but in the year 1814 british troops entered the white house and burnt it down. With the white house it was built by slaves. On many different websites it clarifies that the house was built indeed by slaves. The white house had a restoration to almost the whole thing when it was burned down by the british troops....

...and most obvious symbol of the entire story. They were first a source of inspiration and respect in town, but these same hands are the reasoning for his downfall, “They became his distinguishing feature, the source of his fame. Also they made more grotesque an already grotesque and elusive individuality” (250,251). Wing’s hands were his tools of communicating emotionally and literally, especially with his students. In the story Anderson states, “By the caress that was in his fingers he expressed himself”(252). Wing believed that by his touch he was instilling dreams into the minds of these young boys, “…the stroking of the shoulders and the touching of the hair were a part of the school master’s effort to carry a dream into the young minds”(252). This belief no longer existed after the innocent touch was misinterpreted as an act of perversion, “For once he forgot the hands,” (251). By forgetting his hands were on the shoulder of George Willard, it demonstrates that Wings intentions are not evil; it’s just his way of teaching and showing...

...when it is built out of a tic-tac container. The hope is to build a working race car that can exceed an average of 7 miles per hour. Aerodynamics is a key part of building a high-speed automobile. Aerodynamics is the study of the way air moves around objects (What is Aerodynamics, NASA). For sports cars, the shape of the air is preferably streamlined, as opposed to an everyday car with a top speed of 100 miles per hour, which is negligible (The Origins of Streamlined Cars, Oagana). Race-cars are teardrop-shaped to reduce drag, a force that tries to slow down a moving object. The more air that hits a surface, the more drag it makes (Drag Reduction, Illumin). For a high-speed race-car, engineers have incorporated underside paneling to preventing air...

...1-2-3-4 My time as a volunteer brought me to Prairie St. Johns where I was able to work with the children and adolescent patients in various capacities. The way the hospital is set up splits the youth floor into two wings, the east (where the children are) and the west (where the adolescents are). I spent about half my time in each wing usually playing games with anywhere from 1-8 of the patients at a time. There were a variety of games to choose from but some were much more popular than others. In the east wing, the most popular games were jenga, bingo, and imaginary play. In the east wing however, card games were much more popular, we played many games of speed, b.s., and kings corner. Outside of playing games I was also able to have a variety of different conversations with patients from both side, it was fun to laugh and joke, but to also hear their stories. It was always an enjoyable experience and I was glad that my time there was helpful to the staff and gave the kids a new ear to listen, a new voice to hear, and a new person to interact with for a while. During my time at Prairie St. John’s I learned a lot about myself, my misconceptions, and about a few of the patients through hearing their stories. I have generally considered myself a pretty outgoing person, who gets along well with others, is easy to open up to, and is enjoyable to be around. While I was volunteering however I was very reserved at first, I was unsure of myself and my place at the hospital. I didn’t...

...communities. The community in which I live, Red Wing, Minnesota, has been the immigration and relocation destination of Hispanics and African Americans over the past 10 years, and a Native American reservation is located less than 10 miles from the city. All three of these groups have contributed to Red Wing’s economy, workforce, services, and housing. I will be analyzing the influence that race has on Red Wing in terms of neighborhoods, employment, and other environments with which I am familiar. I will also be comparing myself to others in the community and examining our differences and similarities in regard to lifestyle, culture, background, and community acceptance. I will not only unveil racism and inequality within Red Wing, but I will also give examples to prove that the City of Red Wing takes these matters very seriously and is taking immediate and effective steps to both embrace diverse ethnicities and educate the community about diverse cultures in hopes to promote tolerance and acceptance. The population of Red Wing, last recorded in July, 2007 at over 15,000, is made up of 93% White Non-Hispanics, 2.6% American Indians, 1.3% African Americans, 1.3% Hispanics, 0.8% two or more races combined, and 0.5% other races. Of the 15,000 residents, 1.3% are foreign born, a low percentage compared to the 5.3% foreign born residents living in the entire state of Minnesota (Red Wing, 2007). The main two ancestries in Red Wing are German and Norwegian. I fall into both the...

...I hope you are enjoying the last year at your middle school. After middle school graduation, you would finally be a highschool student at M-A. M-A is a great school and you would encounter many new things. So I want to tell you today about some things you might see at M-A and advise you on how to act in situations you might encounter. First of all, I need to tell you that M-A is a very competitive and challenging school. Students at M-A are always willing to compete with others over anything. This doesn't just apply to academics, but it also applies to bathrooms. Because you are a girl, you need to face the race towards the girl’s bathroom every time you have a break. Last year, the school was generous enough to close the largest bathroom in D-wing and make a new G-wing with a smaller bathroom. Now you get to dodge students in the hallways and sprint to the nearest bathroom in order to stand in line for an hour before you can relieve yourself....

...freedom. "... he would be free" (Dunbar 17) "sings of freedom"(Angelou 21) In both poems the main theme is freedom and the cage is a symbol of an internal or external conflict. The two poems may be similar but Dunbar conveys being caged and wanting freedom in his own way. In Dunbar's poem the bird is beating its wings and is physically hurting itself. " When his wings is bruised and his bosom is sore/ When he beats his bars"(Dunbar 12-13) The bird is really trying to get out of its confinement and is willing to hurt itself to achieve it. In "Sympathy" the bird isn't singing with joy. "Not a carol of joy or glee/ But a plea, the upward to heaven he flings."(Dunbar 18-20) The...

...The Coexistence of Good and Evil The first couple paragraphs of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s, “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” presents a family who has been dealt with a delirious old man with wings that showed up in their courtyard. Pelayo and his wife Elisenda had been dealing with an immense amount of crabs inside their house at the time and a sickly child who has had a temperature all night and had thought it was due to the stench brought on by the crabs. The couple had then reached out to their neighbor women who “knew everything about life and death” (590). The woman had explained to them that he was an angel who had been defeated by the storm and was there to take the child’s soul away. She advised Pelayo and his wife to club him to death but instead, they had dragged him out of the mud and locked him in a chicken coop where the hens live. The sickly child’s fever had vanished and had an appetite again shortly after the old man’s arrival. The family soon realized they could make a profit by charging admission because of all the attraction that this old man with enormous wings has brought. Though this old man was held captive throughout the entire story, many good things had happened during his presence. There are many key symbols in this short story by author Gabriel Marquez that allow me to believe both good and evil co-exist. The story begins with a dark setting by describing the most dreadful occurrences one could endure. One of the first occurrences described was...

...Daniels and Apple juice. Wings. Good service. These are just a few of my favorite things and they reside at Café Circa. One of the gems in the historic Edgewood avenue side of Atlanta, CC is an interesting and pleasantly underwhelming restaurant that combines Caribbean and Latin infused cuisine. Underwhelming because it has décor and ambiance that is sexy and quiet, not a screamingly overdone design, which many establishments have. The interior gives the feel of a very sultry living room, inviting and comfortable. The seating layout is functional and relatively open. Tables are spaced in a manner that allows for quiet private conversation. Did I mention a full bar? One of the few establishments that actually has apple juice at the bar. If you haven’t tried apple juice and Jack Daniels, you are missing out on and losing at/in life. Period. I digress. Prices at CC, were comparable to quality. The most expensive item is about twenty four bucks. So for two people, you will spend about fifty bones with tax. Now let’s get to the reason why you are reading this in the first place, the food. An appetizer of guava jerk wings kicked off the experience. Yeah, it sounds random and leaves you asking who in the world would combine guava and jerk. Granted, jerk is good enough but guava came out of left field. Believe me, it works!! Very tasty, savory, and flavorful. If you want to be fancy and need to serve something at a football party, these wings are sure to please and wow...

...in life, especially when the majorities tend to be in a rush or expect things to be complete right then and there. However, there is hope for impatient people. Those who are impatient now, were not impatient before in their life. Thankfully, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the author of “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”, uses exquisite imagery, one main point of view, and creative mysticism to convey the significance of patience. In the story “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,” Marquez highlights that patience is key when trying to conquer different obstacles. There were many...

...The most significant thing I learned last week was that I need to be more prepare for my briefings. I thought I could go in front of the class and just wing it without any practice or a dry run. I was mistaken; I made it through the topic of CMSAF James Cody’s view on the Enlisted Performance Report but I struggled. I had to back track and try to hit points that I had missed. During the briefing is when my déjà vu moment was. It reminded me of my senior year when I would give briefings in my speech class and I would normally just go out there and wing it. I learned that if you want to be a good speaker that you have to rehearse these things. If not I will go out there and get lost in my speech and lose track out where I am due to nerves. The briefings have been the most frustrating for me not because I am scared to talk in front of the class it was because I was unprepared. I have learned that if you want to be a good leader/speaker that you have to be prepared for any situation that is thrown your way. Whether it has to deal with a troop being late for work, a troop with personal problems, or just being able to communicate with your troops. You need to be prepared for the situations mentally and physically to be a good leader. That is what I learned in class last week and I hope to improve myself to become a good speaker and...

...run when its mournful cry echoes across the woods, a solemn lament for you. Looking up you see it, the lone thestral. You’ve been able to see it for three weeks now. Three weeks since she, your mother, died. Three weeks since her alabaster skin faded into ivory. Three weeks since her ochre eyes failed to burn. The ground slips away beneath you as your pace fastens in the approach to the creature. The thestral makes no moves. You let your feet slide over the snow until they stop before it, hands shaking as they dangle over its frail wings. Like you, it’s broken, fragmented. Like you again, it’s alone, left to roam the world in a never-ending solitude. Its outline is jagged, angular, from the protruding bones which have been weathered away to an argent hue. The translucent film covering the skeleton conceals nothing at all. The thestral seems incomplete, as if something has been lost and can never be retrieved. Even the wings, its supposed sign of power, look as if they’ll simply flutter away in the whirls of wind. Thoughts of Mother tend to fade away then. It seems as if when you look at it you realise that you are, perhaps, as insubstantial as everything else in the world. One day, you will be lost in the obscurity of infinity, a mere blot in the world’s life but for this second you...
