..."Youth Hostel". These first Youth Hostels were an exponent of the ideology of the German Youth Movement to let poor city youngsters breathe fresh air outdoors. The youths were supposed to manage the hostel themselves as much as possible, doing chores to keep the costs down and build character as well as being physically active outdoors. Because of this, many Youth Hostels closed during the middle part of the day. There are several differences between hostels and hotels, including: * Hostels tend to be budget-oriented; rates are considerably lower, and many hostels have programs to share books, DVDs and other items. * For those who prefer an informal environment, hostels do not usually have the same level of formality as hotels. For those who prefer to socialize with their fellow guests, hostels usually have more common areas and opportunities to socialize. The dormitory aspect of hostels also increases the social factor. 1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The growing number of students in higher institutions all over the world has posed a lot of accommodation problem on the part of students and school management. Students at the beginning of each session waste half of the semester looking for accommodation. The few hostels that exist in the higher institutions are not properly managed. Statistics of the number of rooms required to match the growing number of students are farfetched. We have got four hostels in our institute, which consist of two boy’s hostel and two...

...Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction Student’s academic performance occupies a very important place in education as well as in the learning process. So to have better classroom performance and lower drop out incidence, many colleges require students to stay in school dormitories especially those students who live far from school like Cavite, Tarlac, Laguna, Batangas etc. It is widely believed that living in campus dormitory can acquire some benefits in their academic performance. Large universities provide a number of academic services in dormitories such as tutoring and student organizations that encourage an environment conducive to learning. Residence halls have served as an essential aspect of collegiate life since the early colonial colleges. Closely associated with the learning environment, early dorms housed faculty in the facilities to serve in the roles of counselors, supervisors, and educators. Historically, research on individual differences that bear on school success has focused on general intelligence. A century of empirical evidence has now unequivocally established that intelligence, defined as the “ability to understand complex ideas, to adapt effectively to the environment, to learn from experience, to engage in various forms of reasoning, to overcome obstacles by taking thought” (Neisser et al., 1996 , p. 77) has a monotonic, positive relationship with school success (Gottfredson, 2004; Kuncel, Ones, & Sackett, 2010 ; Lubinski, 2009...

...graduating high school seniors deferring entrance into college for one year. The practice of gap year is a European tradition that has been observed for decades. High school seniors take this year to travel, volunteer or work abroad. The time off to travel and experience life outside of school is invaluable. Students have the opportunity to take a break from the grind of studying, experience different cultures and most importantly transition from being high school students into young adults before heading off to college. In 1978 Charles, The Prince of Wales launched Operation Drake a gap year expedition circumnavigating the globe by ship. This is one of the riskier gap year choices, most choices are much tamer and include lodging in a youth hostel or a tent and not on the high seas. The top 10 destinations for gap year according to leading adventure website itoi.com are; 1. South Africa 2. Costa Rica 3. Kenya 4. Sri Lanka 5. Tanzania 6.Honduras, 7. India, 8. ...Reminiscing the Past... Reminiscing the past...well its nice to rekindle some past experiences especially if those were really interesting and fun. I had a great night yesterday because I was able to visit my former dormitory in UP Diliman. When I was still studying in the university, I stayed in an old building, the NARRA Residence Hall. It's an exclusive dormitory for male students of UP Diliman. Anyways, I was with Leo yesterday and he told me that he will go to UP Diliman to bring something for Kiko. Because of not having been there for a long time, I decided to join him and went there from Las Pinas. It was really a tiring ride from the almost southernmost part of Manila to the northernmost part of the region. Leo and I were able to get a cab from Las Pinas and it cost me a lot for the fare... Well, we arrived in UP Diliman at around 8:30 in the evening. We waited for Kiko at Philcoa Jollibee Branch. Just after 15 minutes, I guess, we saw Kiko outside waiving at us with Anton. I felt happy seeing them again after a long time. They told me that Narra is having their OPEN HOUSE that night. Leo told me that he informed me about it but I cant really remember him telling me that. Anyways, I felt a bit bad because I didnt bring my camera with me...and I was only holding my very cheap Nokia 1110i and left my phone camera in my condo. So it was a little frustrating though...I kept on blaming Leo and Leo kept on telling me that he infomed me about it. I guess it was my fault.....

...When enter colleges, college students will face many new problems or decisions, which they have to make. Among which there is a choice for them at first place, that is, he or she has to decide whether to live on campus or live outside of campus. Actually, both of the two choices have their own advantages and disadvantages. So, different people may have different opinions. For example, they will think about the cost, location, how to make friends easily and be specific. Sometimes, it is very hard for the students to tell which one is better and which one is worse because the two choices share a lot of similarities. However, through this analysis, they may find out which one they prefer. First of all, let’s see the advantages of living on campus. First and foremost, living on campus is more convenient than living outside of campus. For instance, If you live on-campus, you can easily walk to classes, libraries, computer labs and cafeterias. You don't have to waste time and money on driving to college, finding a parking space, and so forth. And also, Residences halls usually provide almost all equipment one may need. When living off-campus, it may not be convenient for you to walk to campus so you would have to find transportation. Whether you drive your car or use a form of public transportation, it is still going to cost you money. Traffic can also be an issue if you live in a crowded area. The second advantage of living on campus is can allow you to meet more people...

...Dormitory History From the beginning of the college in 1922 until the mid- to late 1960s, the college had functioned predominantly as a commuter campus. Most of the students were Arkansas City or Cowley County residents, certainly within driving distance to the college. The few who were non-residents were able to obtain housing from private citizens. During the 1960s, the number of students coming from outside Cowley County began to increase dramatically. College personnel such as Del Heidebrecht, Ben Cleveland, Bill Scott, and Dr. Gwen Nelson attempted to secure privately owned facilities in which students could rent. At the same time enrollment was increasing, the college also was losing potential students because of a lack of housing. Heidebrecht, Cleveland and Scott began to solve the problem by identifying private individuals who would be happy to cooperate with the college in an effort to ease the situation. Some early pioneers in that venture include Aileen Haynes, Norman Iverson, George and Betty Sybrant, Vic Bryant, Aubrey Foster, Elmer Morris, Vera Tipton, Ethel Young, Walt and Ruth Fesler, Bruce and Dorothy Smith, Chuck Dumenil and Fern Culmer. And when Dr. Nelson and his wife Lu discovered that it was next to impossible for non-resident African American students to find housing, the Nelsons purchased a house at 215 N. Fifth St. to rent to all students: black, white, athletes and non-athletes. These efforts helped, but other approaches to solving the problem needed...

...Almost every young person entering the period of college education faces the decision to either stay at home or go away for school. The transition from home to dorm life can be seen as one of the most important events in a young persons life, because it is the first extreme life change. Home life and dorm life represent two different ways of living as well as different conditions. Nevertheless, they both have their similarities and oppositions, which can be illustrated only after a deep analysis of both lifestyles. On-campus dormitories may be a pleasant experience for one person and a terrible test for another. First of all, any individual living in the dorms will have to face the reality of rooming with up to three other people. At times dealing with others can be a pain, especially if they are uncooperative. Secondly, the dorms do not provide the individuals with an actual kitchen and contains a small space for refrigerating food. This means that students have to eat in the cafeteria where the food may not be the best quality. Thirdly, the dorms are very small. The average dorm is 12ft by 19ft, which is supposed to house two people and all of their belongings, such as clothes and electronics. Being cramped inside a room can be very uncomfortable as there is little to no privacy because of the closeness of everyone. Living on campus is vastly different than living at home. Home living is another option sometimes chosen by young people. First of all, home living allows the...

...Dear Madam, I am writing to complain about the “fortnight”’s holiday with your agency (if you call eight days so–I am not so keen on Maths ). My holiday with your company did not correspond to what the advertisement claims. Firstly, the advert states that five activities would be offered every day but in fact we were offered only two per day. Secondly, the advert promises one three-day camping expedition to introduce the joys of group-work. Unfortunately, we couldn’t even pitch the tents! Thirdly, it says that our “day off” would be full of the varied, remarkable and relaxing games cited in the leaflet at the residential centre. Actually, the centre was found full so they put us in a youth hostel, instead, some seven kilometres away with no buses and no taxis. For the relaxing games and the remarkable facilities, we were provided with a broken tennis table and used pack of cards. Besides, your company promises comfortable double rooms and memorable delicious meals for accommodation. To our astonishment, the only comfort we found was very dirty bed –clothes and disgusting meals. In general, our holiday was far from the one you had made us expect and the promises you had made us dream of. As a result of all these non-kept promises, I feel like I have been betrayed because I kept my promise of paying you and you did not. The only thing in your leaflet which is true is when you promise in the very introduction that the holiday with you will be an experience we...

...Dormitory Laundry By: Carl Schlotman, Jackie Patterson, and Andy Wolf I. Executive Summary Dormitory Laundry seeks to fill a service that is not currently offered at Queens. Dormitory Laundry would be the first and only laundry service offered at Queens University of Charlotte. Our service would allow students to enjoy more free time with the convenience of not having to do their laundry. This would give students more free time to do their homework to excel academically or enjoy their college experience. By supplying a laundry service that would pick up students clothes from their own dorm buildings, it will be very user friendly for Queen’s Students. Our product is unique because there is no laundry service at Queens. The only option students have is to do their laundry themselves or to take their laundry to dry cleaners for obscene prices. With 800 students living on campus, it makes for a significant market size to scale the business. Our marketing plan can be specialized and focused. We hope to make our service mainstream way of doing laundry among students. Starting with our service, our goal is to always make sure our value proposition to our customers exceeds the cost of the service. One of the ways this can be done is through a persistent effort to always keep the customer in mind. The pricing of our service will be competitive because it is what our customers have told us the price they would pay for the service. As we establish ourselves as a leading service...

...K. Bell February 2, 2011 Life in a College Dormitory Life is a characteristic state or mode of living social life, city life, or real life. Once students reach a certain age they are allowed to make their own decisions. Those decisions can be based on how and where they live. Those decisions can also be based on what they want to do with their life after they reach a certain age. People get their own opinions about what is right and what is wrong and decide to practice what they speak. Many students go through different phases during college and see things differently. As for as the dormitory part of college life students chose three areas that are criticized the most. Life in a college dormitory can be pathetic due to poor maintenance, room sizes, and personal relationships. To continue, a major downfall in dormitories is poor maintenance. Most of the problems dorms have are lack of hot water, broken heaters, broken washing machines, etc. that are never fixed properly. During the season of winter these problems should be checked before the season actually comes. There is a problem with the heating system at Totty Hall that can lead to student’s sickness because the system does not work properly. For instance the heaters blow cold air during the winter instead of heat and seldomly, students might feel warm air. Recently, the water was turned off during the night due to a busted pipe because of winter conditions. The problem took three days to be fixed and...
