...Ryan Stanley May 28th, 2015 Art History period 4 Music as Art Essay Hotel California – The Eagles Hotel California is a song created by the band, “The Eagles” in 1977. Members of the band include Don Fedler, Don Henley, and Glenn Frey. Don Henley is the lead vocalist on the original recording of the song and it ends with an extended section of electric guitar played by both Fedler and Frey. The meaning of the song has many different interpretations, such as a connection to Satanism, psychiatric hospitals, and cocaine addictions, while the members of the band claim that it is a depiction of their experience of “the high life” in Los Angeles. Through the lyrics, vocals, and music in the song Hotel California, it describes the excess of sex,...

...Hotel California details how numbing the American Dream can actually be. The song tells the story of a lonesome traveler wandering through the middle of nowhere and coming across the “Hotel California”. However, as the song progresses, the out of touch nature of the hotel begins to grow on the protagonist to the point where he wishes to return to his prior life, but cannot. This song, while emphasizing on the fame related side of the success, is an excellent analogy for the secret costs of the American Dream. At the beginning of the song, a stranger stumbles upon the Hotel California and is kindly (and surreally) greeted by the staff. This represents the enticing feeling of succeeding, one that is comforting, and welcoming. Furthermore, there are numerous references to materialism along with the free...

...Hotel California Introduction The law of negligence views negligence as an intentional tort where the defendant acts wrongfully, not in implication to cause harm but acting in such a way as without sufficient concerns for the interests of others (Feinman, 2014). In this scenario, the injured victim suffers loss and it seems fair-minded that the careless tortfeasor who caused the harm to the victim, should bear the burden of the resulting loss. Ms. Warren suffered harm in terms of a lost opportunity to acquire the first Palm Desert Hotel due to the negligent failure by her mortgage lender, Mechanics National Bank to promptly remove the lien on her Lagoon Beach property. This paper is a report to Legal Eagles LLP, the firm handling Ms. Warren’s...

...Andrew Zobel MUS 1014 February 13, 2016 Analysis of “American Pie” and “Hotel California” Perhaps no other song better expresses the overall attitude of the United States (U.S.) in the 1970s than Don McLean’s “American Pie”. Released in November 1971, the song is still considered one of the greatest songs in U.S. history. Additionally, the Eagles’ song “Hotel California”, released in 1976, also exemplifies American culture during the turbulent decade of the 70s. “American Pie” is, for lack of a better word, a long song, with a run time of over eight minutes. The song consists of seven verses, as well as a chorus which is repeated seven times. The song begins with McLean’s voice over a piano. When the opening verse ends, the piano becomes less relevant in the song, and an acoustic guitar becomes the predominant instrument. The song employs a standard AABA structure, alternating between choruses and verses, except at the end, when the chorus is repeated, with the second iteration acting as the coda. Like most popular songs of the 70s, The Eagles’ rock epic “Hotel California” is written in a verse/chorus format. It contains four verses, two iterations of the chorus, a coda, and a lengthy guitar solo to end the song. The standard Eagles’ instrumental setup for the song includes drummer Don Henley singing, as well as playing the drums. Joe Walsh, Don Felder, and Glen Frey play guitars, and bassist Randy Meisner plays the bass. All four offer backup vocals during...

...The number one hit album in America eight weeks in early 1977 . “California Hotel” is a song produced by the Eagles, in the 1970's. Similar to many other songs and articles, “California Hotel” talks about the lifestyle these artists encountered after settling in California. To many people, living in California was a dream. In “Golden State, Golden Youth” Kirse Granat May states,“To those who followed the rush to gold, California remained unique: a place to regain health, live on the frontier, build a railroad, exploit agricultural possibilities, discover oil, or make fortunes in real estate. For newcomers, it was still the land of the second chance, glowing with opportunity amidst sunshine.” The Eagles were a band that moved to california to pursue their dreams, just like millions of people across the world. These artists heard many rumors about the endless money, women, and fame thats awaiting for them in the golden state, so they took their chances. Unlike many people which moved to california, their dreams of money and fame came true. But what they didn't know is that everything comes with a price. The lifestyle that came with that much fame and money, was a life style that had no true love, only meaningless sex, drug abuse, and an unethical life. After these artists discovered the true life of a Californian star, they wished they have never came; they tried to escape the life they were living but it was too late and they couldn't. The introduction of this song was very detailed...

...retailers that constitute the new British Invasion. Since 2007, retailers as diverse as Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market grocery stores, cosmetics merchant Space NK, high-end apparel designers Ben Sherman and Ted Baker, and fast-fashion leaders Topshop and Superdry have dropped anchor in California, New York, Boston and other major US cities. Why UK chains would seek out America is not really a surprise: The size of the market provides a huge opportunity, while a common language and similar laws ease the path of entry to some extent. The recession caused Tesco to slow its original plan to have 200 stores by the end of its current fiscal year. But the chain continues to open at least one new store per week, including a recent entry into Northern California in Fresno, and is undertaking significant marketing to reach US consumers. » Jump to indexing (document details) Full Text (1391 words) | Copyright Lebhar-Friedman, Inc. ...Major Water Scarcity in California And it’s Effect on the American South West This essay explains the lack of precipitation in South West America and its effects on California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. It also explores the numerous alternatives that could be used in order to solve this water crisis. The cause of the drought in California is the lack of snowfall in the Rocky Mountains, which caused the river to evaporate. As temperatures are rising, it causes water to evaporate and dry out soil that we need to plant crops. Authorities are reducing the flow from Colorado’s two reservoirs, Lake Powell, which supplies the upper Colorado Basin, and Lake Mead, which supplies Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Evidence suggests “For the...

...California’s Water Problem Introduction: Water Sources in California In her book entitled Managing Water: Avoiding Crisis in California, the ecologist and historian Dorothy Green describes the complicated and intricate California water system (University of California Press, October 9, 2007). Green’s description and analysis becomes more important to the people of California with every week that passes/ This is because California is now in the fourth year of drought in which no rain, snow, or hail has fallen (“California Drought”, CA.gov. Online at: http://ca.gov/drought/). In her work on the topic, Dorothy Green describes very carefully the system by which the rain, snow, and hail that fall in northern California move downwards in a flow of water that serves the entire state thanks to the power of gravity. The river systems of California include Colorado River and the Sacramento River. These great river systems move the water southwards, (to Los Angeles) and westwards (to San Francisco), respectively. In addition to these well known rivers to the system of rivers in California includes more than thirty rivers including the Klamath, the American, the Tolumne, the Merced, the Yuba, the Kern, the Russian, the Tule, and right here in Los Angeles the Los Angeles River which runs right through the industrial section of downtown Los Angeles in a cement channel : In addition to the river systems of California, Green describes a network of dam release channels, canals...

Japanese immigrants viewed themselves as the ‘superior race above all Asians’. This portrayal was an influential factor that spawned the inception of the first farm workers union in California history. Although, due to racial barriers and increased pressure by organized labor unions, several Issei were viewed as “strangers” as they were barricaded from factory and office jobs. As a result, they were involuntarily restricted to menial labor industries in railroads, agriculture, coal mining, smelting, meatpacking and salt (Almaguer,...

...Kevin Aquilo AMST 350 Final Exam: Response 1 California is the final destination for those who seek freedom and success. It is the state where dreams can become fulfilled and anything born from imagination can be physically built. California has spawned plenty of “built environments” in the twentieth and twenty-first century. Many of these environments were responses to things like the automobile craze, tourism, and celebrities. These built environments were constructed with the California Dream as their framework. We discussed many examples of built environments in class but there are three in particular that stood out to me. They are Hollywood, Disneyland, and the suburbs of Orange County. Hollywood was a small city with a post office, hotel, and a couple markets before the film industry took Hollywood by storm in the 1900s. Prior to Hollywood, major film companies were located in New Jersey. Filmmakers ventured to Los Angeles, California to break free from harsh movie producing patents and rules imposed on them by the Edison Motion Picture Company. The beautiful weather and diverse terrain of California were also ideal filming locations. Hollywood is an example of a built environment because filmmakers and producers saw the opportunity for success within the film industry and took advantage of it. The first film shot in Hollywood was titled Old California, and its success encouraged many out-of-state filmmakers to make their way to the golden state. It wasn’t long...

We have filed our paperwork and incorporated the name, and registered as a non-profit. We have applied for the non-profit federal and state exemptions, created our corporate bylaws and appointed our initial directors. Our first board meeting was held and all necessary licenses and permits have been obtained. With the completion of these, we need to take the next step and the most crucial one which is fundraising. When it comes to fund raising, individual donors contribute the largest amount. There is also available funding through grants offered by federal, state and local government. (cite source SBA) The catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) provides a database of all federal programs available to state and local government (cite sources gsa.gov).
