Everybody has a point of view on issues and topics. People’s points of view are based on many different things. Culture, religion, gender, age, and economic interests influence our points of view the most. Time periods can influence your points of view as well. In the book “Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet”, Henry and Henry’s father see the Japanese and Japanese-Americans very differently. Henry does not mind the Japanese and Japanese-Americans living in their own neighborhood in the city, but Henry’s father does not trust them and thinks they should be sent back to Japan. Henry’s father considered himself still part of China. Henry’s family left China because of the Japanese invasion of the country. Henry’s father was a traditional Chinese man and because of the war he believed the Japanese could not be trusted and needed to leave America. Henry’s father did not approve of Henry seeing Keiko. Henry decided to go see Keiko’s family before they went to a camp and Henry’s father said “’ If you walk out that door--if you walk out that door now, you are no longer part of this family. You are no longer Chinese. You are not part of us anymore. Not a part of me,’” (Ford 185) but Henry did not care because he wanted to see Keiko.
Another point of view that influenced Henry’s decision about the Japanese was his age. Since, Henry did not know a lot about the war or the politics behind the war, so when he heard different viewpoints and different reasons for trusting the Japanese he considered them and chose which one he believed in. In the world, many different events were taking place. One of the biggest events during this time was World War II. After Pearl Harbor, Henry’s father became angrier with the Japanese. Henry’s father’s hatred for the Japanese started in China. The Japanese invaded China to try and gain power in the region. The Japanese invasion can be compared to, Hitler invasion of Poland that triggered World War II. Germany, Italy, and Japan worked together to conquer different countries in Europe and Asia.
