PRINCIPLES OF CLEANING The Basic principles of cleaning will provide the housekeeper the knowledge on what and how to clean a certain area. This involves the following: 1. Recognize the different types of dirt. 2. Know the elements of cleaning. 3. Apply cleaning methods. 1. DIRT – is a residue we remove or clean in every area. 2. DIFFERENT TYPES OF DIRT 1. DUST – is the baisc source of dirt. It is a form of particles. 2. SOIL – when the dust are mixed with water and oil.
3. STAIN – when patches of soil dry up in any surface. 4. TARNISH or DISCOLORATION – is caused by stains that were not removed for sometime.
CLEANING ELEMENTS When cleaning, we can not just hold a piece of rag and wipe the dirty spot. There are four elements that we need to combine in order to clean effectively. These elements of cleaning are: time, mechanical action, chemical action and temperature.
Time combines with all other elements of cleaning. When performing mechanical action, it will take time to remove the dirt, Chemical application to dirt requires time to take effect or react to the dirt. Time chemical action and mechanical action make a good cleaning combination.
On instances, when the types of dirt could not be removed by the first three elements, Temperature shall be required to effectively complete the cleaning process.
For Example: 1. greasy pots could not be cleaned well despite the application of the first three elements. However, greasy dirt can be easily loosened with the application of hot water. 2. For Blood stain on cloth, applying cold water then sud with body soap and rub on the blood spot will easily remove the blood. Application of hot water or laundry detergents could harden the blood stains.
CLEANING METHODS When we clean, we remove dirt and control the spread of virus, bacteria and fungi that are harmful to the human body and the environment as a whole.
The Cleaning methods are commonly used in the hotel: 1. Air cleaning 2. Wet and dry surface cleaning 3. washing of textile materials, and 4. Waste segregation and disposal
AIR CLEANING

Air cleaning is required when an area or space has with bad odor. Usually, the bad smell is noticed when the area is not clean. To be able to clean the area, this basic air cleaning method must be applied: dirt must removed from the area, clean the surfaces, and disinfect. when we apply dry surface cleaning, we remove the dirt by using cleaning tools that do not require wetting while cleaning. Wet surface cleaning requires the addition of water or other liquid on the dirt coupled with the following cleaning tools-rag, scouring pad, brush. Scrapper, wet mop, wet vacuum cleaner, carpet shampooing machine, washing machines and extractors.
WasHING TEXTILE MATERIALS Hotels have fabric materials installed in the different areas. These materials need washing on regular schedules to maintain cleanliness. The methods of washing are the following: A. Wetting – where fabric is placed in water bath. B. Suding – fabric washing detergent is applied to soften the dirt in the fabric.
3. Rinsing – to remove the dirt residues and chemicals in the fabric. 4. Extracting - to extract the water from the fabric. 5. Drying – to dry the fabric material for reinstallation.
WASte segregation and disposal
Waste segregation and disposal are essential to keeping the environment clean. This method involves all the human senses to decide which waste materials or substances should be disposed or recycled.

GENERAL CLEANING It is done for vacant rooms wherein deep cleaning is Needed to restore and maintain its original beauty.
ACTIVITIES:
1. Stripping of all washable room linen, curtain, cushion covers and carpet in the room. 2. Cleaning of ceiling 3. Cleaning of furniture, fixtures and appliances 4. Floor cleaning
5. Door, Walls and window cleaning
6. Setting –up the room according to standard

REGULAR CLEANING It is done if the guest has checked out so that the room can be occupied again.
ACTIVITIES:
1. Draw the curtain open. 2. Adjust the temperature of the air conditioning unit 3. Remove service trays 4. Stripping of trash and soiled linen. 5. Bedroom Cleaning 6. Bathroom cleaning 7. Kitchen Cleaning 8. Living Area Cleaning 9. Dining Area Cleaning Setting –up the room according to standard

MAKE-UP ROOM This is done occupied rooms if a guest has requested cleaning, either early or late service.
ACTIVITIES:
1. Knock first before entering. 2. Strip trash and soiled linen. 3. Bedroom Cleaning 4. Bathroom Cleaning 5. Kitchen Cleaning 6. Living Area Cleaning
7. Dining Area Cleaning 8. Setting-up the room according to the standard. 9. Check if everything is in order. 10. Turn off all lights. 11. Draw back curtains.

NIGHT TURN DOWN SERVICE An Activity of an evening room attendant done from 6:00pm – 9:00pm.
ACTIVITIES:
1. Turn down the bed 2. Light a Lamp near the bed and close window curtain. 3. Tidy up the bedroom and bathroom. 4. Replenish the amenities in the bathroom. 5. Clear the tables in the living and dining areas. 6. Clear the dishes in the kitchen sink.
