Housing Assistant Research Paper

As a premedical student, I had not expected that my position as a housing assistant would become an important part of my education at Johns Hopkins University. I had thought that all I needed were good grades in my science and math classes and good clinical experiences in my pathway towards medical school. However, working for the housing office has taught me essential skills for the professional world that I had not realized I was missing. Through the mentorship of my supervisors, I have become more flexible in dealing with mistakes; I am a more effective communicator and I am better at observing my surroundings and the people in it.
Prior to being in the office, I remember an instance where I was explaining to my freshmen roommates what I expected from them to avoid any possible conflict during the year. I talked …show more content…
Consequently, I had to let go of the African ideology that it was disrespectful to look at my conversation partner in the eye. To an African parent this gesture signified disrespect, and not that one is still listening to body and facial expressions while passing across needed information. Additionally, this position has relieved me of the notion that mistakes are always to be avoided. My dad would say, "If it's worth doing at all, it's worth doing well." In other words, I grew up thinking that every mistake would always lead to terrible consequences. Thus, when in my first year at the office, I was afraid of the backlash I would receive after making mistakes with scheduling and communication. For example, I was 1 hour late to work one day because of some problems with the public transportation system, so I convinced myself that I was fired. I tearfully walked into the housing Director's office and I explained myself, but she told me that all that was needed was notification of such an occurrence and that I was not

Energy Science Vs Society

...Between the basic problems of how policy would increase energy efficiency how does it bring in consumers and what consumers does it really include. The second issue of the conclusions is how much research is out there and what basis does it really have. The problem with the research out there about this subject is how biased it is there is not allot of research out there that includes the true consumer standpoint. Nevertheless, the available evidence from empirical analyses of weatherization, demand-side management programs, automobile and appliance markets, the “landlord–tenant” agency problem, and information elicitation suggests that while investment inefficiencies do appear in various settings, the actual magnitude of the Energy Efficiency Gap is small relative to the assessments from engineering analyses. Future research should utilize randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental techniques to estimate the impacts of energy efficiency programs on heterogeneous consumer types and to address the challenges posed by unobserved costs and...

An Evaluation of How Workplace Practice Is Influenced and Directed by a Specific Social Policy

...An Essay: An evaluation of how workplace practice is influenced and directed by a specific social policy. Social policy is “the theoretical pursuit of norms about how we think society ‘ought’ to behave” (Alcock et al. 2008) in action it consists of plans and interventions put in place by the government and social services to improve the wellbeing of society. There are five main areas influenced by social policies derived to improve services for the classic welfare state namely, education, housing, social security, health and social work. Social policy is intimately concerned with how to address and ameliorate social problems and with the analysis of the success or failure of policies designed to improve welfare and wellbeing (Alcock et all. 2008:2-3) Historically social policy can be seen as far back as 1388 when “attempts were made to fix wages and to limit the mobility of labour which may cause wages to rise” (Alcock, 2008:9) a more methodical system of poor relief was introduced in Victorian times, the Elizabethan Poor Law Acts of 1598 and 1601 to house and provide work for the poor under the direction of local parishes. Following this the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834 set the foundations for social policy and the modern welfare state today by changing the way that poor law was dealt with, it was streamlined into universal laws and principles that towards the end of the 18th century prompted formation of the English government. The goal of the HIV/AIDS Policy is to engage individuals, schools, organizations, and communities for the fight against HIV/AIDS. The policy’s objective is to change people’s attitudes about those living with HIV and those who are most at-risk for the disease (OHAP, 2010). Nurses in Nursing Homes

...living facilities, one of the fastest growing housing options for older adults, represents a potentially new employment option for RN’s. When most people think of nursing homes, they think about nurses being responsible for the patients. However, most nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the United States do not have any RN’s employed. Most assisted living facilities have LPN’s, medical technicians, and certified nursing assistants. Why are there no nurses in nursing homes/ assisted living facilities? “Slightly fewer than 1 million people age 65 or older live in an estimated 33,000 assisted living facilities, private or shared units.”(Kovner) All assisted living facilities provide congregated meals, laundry and housekeeping services, and some social activities; all assisted living facilities provide health monitoring and assistance with activities of daily living (ADL’s). “Approximately 60% of residents need assistance with one to three ADLs; 75% need assistance with medications.”(Kovner) “Current estimates suggest that 50% of residents in assisted living have Alzheimer’s or Dementia, and the number is expected to grow.”(Kovner) Many assisted living facilities have a special locked down unit for residents with Alzheimer’s or Dementia. On average a nursing assistant will have 14-30 residents to tend to. This means making sure everyone is checked on every hour, changed, and making sure the resident is okay. Nursing assistants are the most hands on with residents living...
