Aim:
To investigate the issues with windblown sand in Hout Bay.

Question:
What problems are caused by windblown sand in Hout Bay and how have human activities made this problem worse?

Hypothesis:
Human activity like building properties in the path of the airborne sand has caused the Sand dune problem in Hout Bay.

Introduction:
Hout Bay has a unique microclimate of its own, because of its southerly aspect and surrounding mountains. Due to this when the Hout Bay sand dunes are exposed to the South Easter, it becomes airborne. A classic Aeolian Dune System.
For many years this process has been taking sand from Hout Bay beach and giving it to Sandy Bay and Llandudno. Now many people have been building their houses in the path of this process and it does not allow the sand to migrate as it once did but gets stuck in Hout Bay, causing many problems.
There have been many attempts to alleviate the sand dune problem but none have been successful so far. Causes: …show more content…
The sand dunes in Hout Bay used to be a functional natural system; in the summer dry sand accumulated on Hout Bay beach would be blown across the neck to Sandy Bay. It was always moving.

The destruction of this naturally functioning system began in the 1950’s with the development of Hout Bay. Buildings and roads were constructed and the intrusion of alien vegetation, these affectively destroyed the functioning of the dunefield.

Some geologists predict that Sand Bay will become a boulder beach in time due to no supply of the windblown sand to nourish its beaches.

When the council grassed the dunes, it caused more problems. The grass trapped the grass and the dunes grew, spawning another set of sand dunes behind them. These dunes are now engulfing buildings, the council has acknowledged this problem and is now moving the sand in trucks to the Nek in hope that the sand blows to Sand Bay.

...© 2000 OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT JOURNAL Community participation in development: nine plagues and twelve commandments Lucius Botes and Dingie van Rensburg Downloaded from http://cdj.oxfordjournals.org/ at AGORA Kenya Administration account on December 4, 2013 ABSTRACT Many development thinkers and practitioners have been pondering over community participation for the last two to three decades – some even called the 1980s the decade of participation. To a large extent the current decade of social movements, non government organizations (NGOs) and community based organizations (CBOs), is a manifestation of organized community participation. By analyzing the dynamics of community participation, particularly in the South African urban upgrading context, nine obstacles and impediments (‘plagues’) are exposed which serve to illustrate participatory development as a complex and difficult, though essential and challenging endeavour. Twelve draft guidelines (‘commandments’) are also presented in trying to address these obstacles associated with participatory development. Introduction Community participation in development is advocated for various noble reasons and is often rhetorical and permeated with lofty sentiments. However, to criticize these advantages of community participation would appear to be ungenerous. As a concept, ‘community participation’ is one of the most overused, but least understood concepts in developing countries without a serious...
