How celebrity chefs appeal to their audiences

Nigella Lawson is a classic example of a modern day chef who markets herself in a way to appeal to a certain audience – Men. She uses almost flirtatious camera angles and vocabulary to add to her apparent femininity and it is this presentation style that has led to her being crowned ‘the queen of food porn’ and it is this allure and undisguised sexuality that appeals to the male market, so much so that sales of her DVDs show a higher proportion of male buyers as opposed to women. However, she still appeals to women as well marketing herself as a ‘domestic goddess’ many women aspire to be just like her with her obvious good looks and sex appeal. It is her ability to interact with both the male and female audience that makes her such a success which has been noted by the media, the Guardian saying "Men love her because they want to be with her. Women love her because they want to be her". It is this marketing that has resulted in Nigella having 10 of her own television series as well as resulting in her selling over half a million books in Britain. With a net worth of £15million she is one of the UK’s most successful female celebrity chefs.
Jamie Oliver is another celebrity chef who has marketed himself to appeal to a certain audience. Born into an upper middle class family Jamie is notorious for his almost fake estuary English so much so that he has been used as an example for many definitions of ‘mockney’-(An upper class celebrity who attempts to solicit the admiration of the common person by pretending to have a cockney accent.) found on the internet. His colloquial presentation style gives his shows and books making him appear down to earth and in doing this makes him appeal to “ordinary people” allowing him to market himself to a mass audience.
