Elizabeth “Betsy” Ross is a renowned historical woman from the Revolutionary War. She is often portrayed wearing a white bonnet with a yellow dress. Betsy Ross was a Fighting Quaker that supposedly helped design and make the official American flag.
Quakers were a religious group also known as “Religious Society of Friends” or “Friends Church”. Betsy returned to the Quakers after her first husband died, but she joined the Fighting Quakers, also known as “The Free Quakers”. Quakers were normally pacifists that were forbidden in owning guns, but the Fighting Quakers were the Quakers that supported the war. “The story goes that she made the flag in June of 1776 after a visit from President George Washington, Robert Morris, and her husband's uncle, George Ross,”(Betsy Ross - Folk Hero). The original design for the flag had thirteen six point stars and the stars were not in the circle formation until Betsy altered the design she was given and made the stars five pointed and put them in a circle formation. Each stripe on the flag represents the original colonies that separated from Britain during the Revolutionary War. Each star represents a state, they add on a star every time we get a new state; this is why we now have 50 stars on the American flag; not just the original 13. Though they say that Betsy made the flag, there is still doubt to this very day on the subject. The reason some are reluctant to believe that Betsy made the flag is because that was not made clear until 1876, 50 years after Betsy Ross died. “The first flags that were carried by the American armies were made by a Quaker woman,”(Wetherill).
