Columbus: Hero or Conqueror?
Why should we devote a day of celebration to a man who led to the systematic oppression and killings of millions of people? Columbus Day is a very popular holiday in the United States, but many people fail to understand that is based upon the maltreatment and suffering of an entire race of people. Although Columbus Day does contain some historical merit, it still celebrates a man who exploited the Native people, led an era of destruction, and did not even discover America. Columbus only caused great despair and does not deserve a day in his honor.
Columbus was oppressive to the Native people and only sought to satisfy his thirst for gold. Admittedly, Columbus sparked global interactions that finally linked the “new world” to the “old world” in the form of the Columbian exchange. However, the exchange between the Americas and Eurasia had deadly consequences, leading to infectious plagues that ravaged the Americas. Furthermore, anthropologist Jack Weatherford argues that Columbus cultivated the establishment of atrocious institutions such as slavery in …show more content…
Many others made the exhibition before him so his arrival had little significance. Some say that Columbus deserves to be commended for his bravery in conquering unknown seas and venturing new lands. In reality, it was only through accident that Columbus discovered the Americas. Columbus did not set sail with the intent of making monumental discoveries, and he never even realized the magnitude of his actions .It is also a popular conception that Columbus was the first person from Europe to make the exhibition to arrive in the Americas. This is false as evidence suggests that the Vikings had preceded Columbus in this feat. In addition, it has been reported that the Americas were settled hundreds of years before the arrival of Columbus. Columbus’s role in the discovery of the Americas is drastically

We look back on our behaviour when we were young and think how foolish we were. In the same way our family, our community and our town endeavour to avoid the mistakes made by our predecessors. The experiences of the human race have been recorded, in more or less detail, for some four thousand years. If we attempt to study such a period of time in as many countries as possible, we seem to discover the same patterns constantly repeated under widely differing conditions of climate, culture and...

...Mid Finals I. Age of Exploration The Age of Exploration or Age of Discovery as it is sometimes called, officially began in the early 15th century and lasted until the 17th century. The period is characterized as a time when Europeans began exploring the world by sea in search of trading partners, new goods, and new trade routes. In addition, some explorers set sail to simply learn more about the world. Whatever their reasons though, the information gained during the Age of Exploration significantly helped in the advancement of geographic knowledge. Reasons for Exploration and Key Voyages Though the desire to simply explore the unknown and discover new knowledge is a typical human trait, the world's famous explorers often lacked the funding needed for a ship, supplies, and a crew to get underway on their journeys. As a result, many turned to their respective governments which had their own desires for the exploration of new areas. Many nations were looking for goods such as silver and gold but one of the biggest reasons for exploration was the desire to find a new route for the spice and silk trades. When the Ottoman Empire took control of Constantinople in 1453, it blocked European access to the area, severely limiting trade. In addition, it also blocked access to North Africa and the Red Sea -- two very important trade routes to the Far East. The first of the journeys associated with the Age of Discovery were conducted by the Portuguese under Prince Henry the Navigator...

The Satanic Verses

...City Visible but Unseen VI Return to Jahilia VII The Angel Azraeel VIII The Parting of the Arabian Seas IX A Wonderful Lamp Satan, being thus confined to a vagabond, wandering, unsettled condition, is without any certain abode; for though he has, in consequence of his angelic nature, a kind of empire in the liquid waste or air, yet this is certainly part of his punishment, that he is . . . without any fixed place, or space, allowed him to rest the sole of his foot upon. Daniel Defoe, _The History of the Devil_ I The Angel Gibreel "To be born again," sang Gibreel Farishta tumbling from the heavens, "first you have to die. Hoji! Hoji! To land upon the bosomy earth, first one needs to fly. Tat-taa! Taka-thun! How to ever smile again, if first you won't cry? How to win the darling's love, mister, without a sigh? Baba, if you want to get born again . . ." Just before dawn one winter's morning, New Year's Day or thereabouts, two real, full-grown, living men fell from a great height, twenty-nine thousand and two feet, towards the English Channel, without benefit of parachutes or wings, out of a clear sky. "I tell you, you must die, I tell you, I tell you," and thusly and so beneath a moon of alabaster until a loud cry crossed the night,...
