Clara Barton

Clara Barton was one of the most influential women in the Civil War. She was a nurse who took care of soldiers on the battlefield. She was the founder of the American Red Cross, which is still around and used across America today. Clara Barton was born on December 25, 1821. She was born in Oxford, Massachusetts. Growing up, she was very lucky to get an education. Since she was educated, she became a teacher. From 1825-1854, she was a teacher of all ages and opened her own school, which was open to children of all ages. She quit teaching after a man took control of the school and took her position. In 1855, she became the world’s first female to work at the U.S. Patent Office as a recording clerk.
