...Clara Barton Clarissa Harlowe Barton was born in Massachusetts on December 25, 1821. She grew up with both her parents and her older brother. Early in her life, she began helping others by becoming at teacher at the age of 15. This expanded to her opening a school in New Jersey that was free for children because she found that families weren’t letting their kids go to school because they couldn’t afford it. This school became popular and quickly became a place where women weren’t allowed. Barton didn’t agree with this, and so she set off to find something else. She ended up in Washington D.C. at the U.S patent office as a clerk. Though this was a safe place to work, she still had a strong calling to help people more than a clerk could do (Clara 2018)....

...Throughout the years there have been many people who have greatly impacted American history, but one of the most important is the impact made by Clara Barton. Her early beginnings and ideas, work in the classroom, actions on the battlefield, and establishment of the American Red Cross were the 4 main influences she made. Clara shared many memories of her time on the battlefield in sources such as her poem, “The Women Who Went to the Field.” We can also reflect on her pamphlet, “What It Is,” to get a feeling of how her organization came to be . This information shows how Clara Barton was a significant part of American history. Clarissa Harlowe Barton was not always the strong independent women who risked her life to care for wounded soldiers,...

...fully study the historical development of nursing we need to study all aspects of nursing science throughout time, explain the relationships between nursing science and our profession, as well as influences of other disciplines on the development of nursing. Time Line Specific Years, Theories, Theorists, and Nursing Historical Events Prior to the 17th century. Prior to the 17th century to the 19th century, nursing care included basic hygiene, and primarily comfort needs. These were carried out by Nuns, and other religious groups (Craven & Hirnle, 2003). Nursing could possibly be the oldest profession. It started with wet nurses, who delivered babies, cared for them and their mothers (Weatherford, 2014). 19th century. Florence Nightingale developed the Environmental Theory. During the Crimean War she noticed more soldiers died of disease then of battlefield injuries. Through research she believed that dirt, and lack of cleanliness led to diseases. She instituted proper hygiene such as: hand washing, cleaning wounds, cleanliness of environment soldiers were in, from barracks to nursing wards. She believe that providing fresh air, sunshine, and preventing malnutrition led to decreased deaths dramatically (“Nursing Theory”, 2013). Clara Barton established the American Red Cross in 1881. Mary Ann Bickerdyke delivered raised charitable funds to Union...

...Professional Roles and Values Danielle Cote Western Governors University Professional Roles and Values Nursing in the 21st century has evolved immensely since the days of Florence Nightingale, not only with medicines but also with the care of patients. Because of these changes and growth the code of ethics was developed and regulatory agencies were created to help and guide nurses. There are numerous professional nursing organizations, many catering to a nurses personal career choice. As an Emergency Room Nurse belonging to the Emergency Nurses Association, one of the many professional nursing organizations, has proven to be an asset to my career. Their mission is to advocate for patient safety and excellence in the emergency nursing practice, (ENA 2015) which differs from the Board of Nursing. The Board of Nursing serves as a regulatory board, overseeing the practice and licensure of each nurse. Some professional nursing organizations, such as NSO, provide liability insurance to nurses. Other benefits of professional organizations may include free CE, preferred pricing on exams, resources, and networking. Being a member to both of the above organizations has given me peace of mind and continuous learning and growth in my nursing career. PNO functions are different from regulatory agency such as a regulatory agency has the power to revoke a nursing license or bring legal actions against a nurse but a PNO are mainly resources to enhance nurses. Every nurse is faced with...

...Satyan Basnet History 1302 Book Journal I Johnstown Flood Date: February 18th 2014 Chapter 1: The Sky Was Red After reading the first chapter, I view Johnstown in 1889 as a growing industrial city. Like any other town and cities, the Industrial Revolution had huge effect in its rapid growth. People seemed to be rushing to this town from everywhere. Though the Germans and the Welsh were the first settlers, many others like the Scotch-Irish, Jews and Negroes came along in droves to toil at the town's steel and barbed wire factories. Before the arrival of the canal, Johnstown seemed to be sparsely populated with a rather slow life and the town remained no more than a backwoods trading center. However, with the arrival of the Pennsylvania Mainline canal in 1834 , it became one of the booming town at the heart of Allegheny Mountain Range. After 1834, as the chapter depicts, life in Johnstown seems to start gaining a rapid pace. The nearly doubling of population from 15,000 to 30,000 within ten years time shows how people from all parts of the country were moving into this valley in search of opportunity and prosperity. The image of the town also shows a difference in class. There were wealthy people who lived on the high ground, while the poor workers were crowded in the lowlands. Johnstown then had five-story buildings on Main, up-to-date stores, opera house, a night school, a library, a remarkable number of churches, and several large, handsome houses, most of...

...reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are worthwhile and that your reader genuinely...
