Edgar Allan Poe’s life represented his stories and poems. Poe faced several different tragedies and each tragedy affected his style of writing. Poe wrote many poems and stories. For example, he wrote, “The Masque of the Red Death,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Cask of Amontillado,” and the poem, “For Annie.” All of these were written by Poe, and each one represents death, and desolation. When Poe was two years old, his mother, Elizabeth Poe passed away. He was then adopted by a wealthy family, but Poe never received any money. He lived a poor life until he married his cousin Virginia. Then, Virginia died and Poe “collapsed from stress.” All of the deaths of his loved ones’ affected his writings, causing him to write with sorrow …show more content…
In the story, “The Masque of the Red Death,” Poe writes, “And with these retired to the deep seclusion of one of his castelled abbeys,” to show the isolation. The prince tried to isolate himself, and his revelers from the Red Death going around the village. He tried to isolate everyone to escape the disease. In the poem, “For Annie,” the narrator was isolated from his love. Poe writes, “And I rest so composedly, now in my bed, that any beholder, might fancy me dead.” Annie was isolated from her life by an illness, and the narrator was isolated from Annie because she passed away. In the story, “The Fall of the House of Usher,” the house was isolated from everyone, and everything, “I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country.” The house and the Ushers’ were out in the country isolated form everyone. In, “The Cask of Amontillado,” Montresor isolates Fortunato from the palazzo. Poe writes, “I have my doubts, and I was silly enough to pay the full Amontillado price without consulting you in the matter. You were not to be found, and I was fearful of losing a bargain.” This quote shows how Montresor tries to isolate Fortunato from everyone by buying him his favorite wine to drink. Isolation can lead to suspense and can lead to pain. Poe experienced isolation his whole life due to many deaths of his loved ones. This isolation in his life affected the way he feels about love, and affected the way he writes. He wrote with sorrow and pain in many different ways, as isolation is one of them in each story he has

North American Fiction

...NORTH AMERICAN FICTION BRIEF INTRODUCTION: Before starting our study of American Fiction we must understand what American Literature is in itself and which pieces of writing we can include within this label. It is believed that when a piece is written in North America, more precisely in the USA, it would automatically be given this epithet. But it should be taken into account that this idea is quite broad and doesn’t reflect the real essence of the term. However, there is also another definition that gathers this essence: American Literature is the one that represents the Americanism, the singularity of the USA philosophy and culture. This way, instead of focusing on who the author is, it is focused on the content of the writing. In that which concerns Fiction, the following documents are the ones considered as narrative: Speeches Letters Short Stories Essays Political Documents Sermons Novels Diaries 1 FIRST LITERARY EXPRESSIONS The first documents in which the idea of Americanism is very present are the Sermons. They respond to the strict Protestantism settled in the New Continent after the arrival of the Pilgrim Fathers and Puritans in the Mayflower (1620) and the Arabella (1630). They established a theocratic community whose main and only point of reference was the Bible. That is why the idea of the ‘city upon a hill’ is still very present in American mentality. As we all know...
