Eli Whitney is the man for cotton. He was practicing law, but ended up in an agricultural economy. The south was not “the south” until about the 1800's. Planters lived in places like South Carolina. There was an “Alabama Fever” that persuaded many Carolinian people to move out west. During the 1800's white planters decided that moving west would be a beneficial option for them, so they did and they packed up their African American slaves also. Slaves were abundant to the planters, so work at plantations was not a problem. The only problem was how time consuming harvesting cotton would be which interfered with the wealth for the planters. This was to ensure that there would be an abundance of slaves for a long time. While in the South they found themselves able to cultivate millions of acres of land, with the help of slaves. The southerners were always wanting more and planned to expand across the continent. They were very successful and had much money, but they did not show it. Very few of the southerns lived in fancy houses and lived high on the horse. The southerners who did live high and mighty used their earnings to send their children to schools oversees, returning home wanting to work in the public. The women oversaw the female slaves who cooked, cleaned, and did all of the household chores. The humbleness was in the good folks of Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas. Their was a gap between the living rich and living normal. Those who did not send their children off to obtain an education wanted public schools, but the ideas were shut down because the state would not support it. There were also poor whites. They were classified by location and what they did for a living. The poor whites did not have slaves-they were slaves to their own
