Gertrude Stein's Mark on Literature Is being different a good thing or bad thing? Some people feel as if they need to conform to society's norms to fit in. However, other people feel as if they can express their individuality as they please and are very blatant about it through their actions. Someone could say Gertrude Stein was different with her writing. Everyone in her time conformed to how people thought literature should have been. Then, here came Gertrude Stein with her own way to write. Some people did not agree with her writing, but she did not let that hamper her. She continued to do it the way she wanted to. First, Stein made her mark in her time, and the mark follows her to today. Eccentrics, iconoclasts, inventors, and innovators are what American culture has always been keen to. This is what Gertrude was because she was always testing the waters with her writing, and people who never even picked up a book by her knew her work (Benard F. Rodgers Jr 1). In “Gertrude Stein's Buried Beliefs,” it says, “MOST BOOKWORMS KNOW THE American writer Gertrude Stein as the pen behind some of the most original modernist literature of the early 20th century” (“Gertrude Stein's Buried Beliefs” 1). Stein, as a modernist writer, did not like the transformations of industrialization and capitalism that had taken place in her world. She had incredulity and did not care much for material rewards and chose the path to write choppy and intangible in literature (“Gertrude Stein's Buried Beliefs” 1). Landon says “Gertrude Stein is ubiquitous in contemporary literature. A child of the nineteenth- century who staunchly adhered to many if its values halfway through the twentieth, she nevertheless dedicated her creative life to the destruction of the nineteenth century concepts of artistic order and purpose”
