The Madrigal is a free-form vocal composition usually set to love lyrics that combines homophonic and polyphonic textures and usually acapella. 1520 in Italy a new method of music emerged named madrigal which was different from the motet because they is never on Latin and often use of word painting and exciting rhythm. They are associated with Rome and Florence, as of the 1540s they became extremely popular. The printing press made it easier to print books of madrigals. Their popularity even made it over to England where Thomas Morley became a wealthy man by being the only man to sell and make madrigals in England with the patent he received by Queen Elizabeth. Madrigals illustrate the changes taking place in the Renaissance by going away from the traditional religious beliefs and music to a more explicit trends, as well as becoming independent unlike other forms of music in the Renaissance.

Composers made them with five or more voices. They were primarily sung for the entertainment they told stories that may have been real and personal to the composer or singer. In addition madrigals were sung and performed at private parties or simply just at meetings of academies by groups of men and women. Writing music that is more realistic and personal to the public, and most importantly music that wasn’t religious based and can be heard outside for mass was important to the shift of nature. Nature as in composers used animals and the world as metaphors to mean something else such as their sexual desires and things in that nature.
