“Thus with a kiss I die.” (V, iii, ln.120). The Shakespearean tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, was written about two star-crossed lovers whose unfortunate deaths end the feud between their families. In the play, Romeo finds Juliet, and after only having a few meaningful conversations, Romeo has fallen in love. Despite their feuding families, the couple is determined to make their relationship work. Romeo, ready to proclaim his love for Juliet, stands under her balcony and recites the famous speech: “But soft, what light through yonder window breaks?” (II, ii, ln. 2). Both characters go through emotional changes triggered from life-changing events. For Romeo, finding Juliet changed his point of view and his personality. Right away, Romeo saw Juliet for more than her beauty and respected and loved her personality and feelings. Romeo also became willing to preserve and make their relationship work despite their arguing families. This was similar to the way Ralph preserved to make his leadership ideas work on the island. Ralph also used his strong ideas for leadership and worked hard to accomplish the tasks that must have been done to survive. Both Romeo and Ralph were very strong in their ideas and worked hard to keep strong both mentally and physically. The way of speech in the two texts is very different. Romeo speaks in a very poetic language that is much older than the language Ralph uses in Lord of the Flies. Romeo and Ralph went through similar situations throughout each story. Not only did they both experience and go through challenging times, but they both tried to do good when put into tough situations. The message in the play is to make good relationships because bad actions can lead to a cycle of hatred and harmful consequences. At the end of the play, the Capulets and Montagues realized the damage their families’ feud had caused not only to their families but also to the people around them. If their families had not been fighting, Romeo, Juliet, Tybalt, Mercutio, and several other characters in the play may have still been alive. The Capulets and Montagues created so much hatred between their families that it caused the people around them to suffer. This message is important for 21st-century teens to understand because it shows that hatred will only lead to bad experiences. At the end of the story, the feuding families realize that their fighting has caused both of their only children and other family members to die. “O brother Montague, give me thy hand. This is my daughter’s jointure, for no more can I demand.” (V,iii, 306-308). This rhyming couplet said by Lord Capulet is an important line in the story. Shakespeare uses rhyming couplets as a way to let people know it is the end of a scene, but here, he used the rhyming couplet to symbolize the end of the feud between the Capulets and Montagues.
