Because of the corruption caused by the Credit Mobilier Scandal, Union Pacific and congressional stockholders involved became rich. The scandal included many notable federal politicians, including the Speaker of the House of Representatives and even the vice president of the United States, Schuyler Colfax. Ultimately, the scandal broke out in 1872 causing a congressional investigation. This dropped Colfax’s vice presidential ticket that year, along with the condemnation of James Brooks (NY Democrat) and Oakes Ames (MA Republican).
