During the Great Depression, the New Deal was enacted between 1933 and 1938 through Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidency in order to improve the economy. Although the New Deal restored public confidence, it was a failure because it excluded African Americans, did not end the Great Depression and did not dramatically improve the harsh living conditions of the people. Under the New Deal, African Americans were not prioritized and faced many struggles. In Document B: African Americans and the New Deal, African Americans were discriminated against and were not given the same opportunities as the whites. The exclusion of this racial group go against the New Deal’s goal of relief for the people. Instead of aiding the unemployed and poor African Americans,

How Did Roosevelt's Response To The New Deal Dbq

...Response Paper #2 The World War did not only harvest millions of lives globally, but it also induced economical and social chaos in the United States known as the great depression. It resulted in financial instability, unemployment and homelessness, inducing the urgency for a solid plan like Roosevelt’s New Deal to remedy these socioeconomic issues, as well as to provide a sense of security and community to Americans, and indeed it did. After the crash of 1929, the value of the US dollar dropped to catastrophic levels. Millions of Americans suffered a great deal and lost their money and savings at banks because the money was not physically stored at the banks. Instead, it was lost in failed investments. The Long-Term Cause Of The Great Depression

...long term cause of the Depression. Since the 20’s was a period of great economic boom, not many people took the future into consideration. Many people bought expensive luxury items using money they did not have. Installment buying allowed people to make a monthly, weekly, or yearly payment on an item that they wanted or needed. Buying on credit and installment buying left millions of people in debt. Also, the continuous scamming in the stock market caused a loss of a lot of money. Buying on margin was a problem because people would only pay 10% and borrowing the rest from the bank. In 1928 Herbert Hoover was elected for president, when the Great Depression hit he did nothing about it. He thought it wasn’t the government’s problem and the people had to deal with it themselves. His approach was “rugged individualism” which means just waiting the depression out, he was a proponent...

...political innovations and some social change in the direction of greater equality and democracy. The American Revolution did not overturn the social order, but it did produce substantial changes in social customs, political institutions, and ideas about society and government. Among the changes were the separation of church and state in some places, the abolition of slavery in the North, written political constitutions, and a shift in political power from the eastern seaboard toward the frontier. The first weak government, the Articles of Confederation, was unable to exercise real authority, although it did successfully deal with the western lands issue. The Confederation’s weakness in handling foreign policy, commerce and the Shays Rebellion spurred the movement to alter the Articles. Instead of revising the Articles, the well-off delegates to the Constitutional Convention created a charter for a whole new government. In a series of compromises, the convention produced a plan that provided for a vigorous central government, a strong executive, the protection for property, while still upholding republican principles and states’ rights. The Federalists met strong opposition from Anti-Federalists, especially in Virginia and New York, but through effective organization and argument, they succeeded in getting the Constitution ratified. By establishing the new national government, the Federalists checked the Revolutionary values of the popular republican government. Terms/names/topics:...
