How Did Wilfred Able To Learn About The Dionysiac Method

The reason that King Oswy went against his previous beliefs and allowed his kingdom to accept the new method for calculating Easter has to do with Saint Wilfred. Wilfred after traveling to Rome to learn about the Dionysiac method personally accepted them and became a strong advocate for its practice. Wilfred returned from France before 664 but he used his knowledge regarding the Easter tables to present an argument at The Synod of Whitby (Abels). The account of Wilfred delivering this argument in favor of the Roman Church is discussed both by Steel and Abels. Abels even goes on to state that Wilfred was a protégé of Alhfrith and that Wilfred was very close to King Oswy. Alhfrith was the son of King Oswy and was appointed by his father as a sub-king of a region of the kingdom called Deira. Wilfred had an excellent social standing in the region and used that to his advantage when explaining the Easter tables. In a journal by Poole he supports this by mentioning that Dionysian calculus was brought forth by Wilfred, in…show more content… However, the Eastern Orthodox countries that accepted the Revised Julian calendar, accepted only the part of the calendar which included fixed dates and celebrations but chose to not accept the movable feasts such as Easter. In today’s society there are a few institutions and individuals that have proposed the idea to fix the date of Easter and eliminate the need for calculations of the moveable feast (Hillerbrand). According to the Hansard Reports from the United Kingdom Parliament, there was an Easter Act of 1928 that was proposed to fix the date of Easter as the first Sunday after the second Saturday in April. The Easter Act still remains on the Statute book of the Parliament and has yet to be implemented but it would also need the approval by the Christian Church
