Finally, the texts explore the effects that new relationships have on your identity. In “The Hobbit” Bilbo is forced to acquaint himself with Dwarves, and his impression of them changes thinking of them as “funny faces” and “[scowling] so angrily [at them]” to eventually becoming more accepting of them and risking his life to save them, having massive spiders “running and swinging towards the hobbit”. As the novel progresses, Bilbo is seen to become more accepting of other races, and in fact his relationships with them become stronger as he learns more about their past and culture. Ultimately, Tolkein pushes Bilbo to meet and create new relationships with people quite different to himself, and it is seen in his actions as the novel progresses
