Energy drinks have increased in popularity in adolescents and young adults throughout Jamaica and concerns have been raised regarding the ingredients in energy drinks and their potential negative effects on health. These drinks are consumed for the purpose of providing an extra energy boost. These drinks are also used for their purported athletic-performance-enhancing effects, improved concentration, and weight loss.

Caffeine, the most physiologically active ingredient in energy drinks, is generally considered safe by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), although adverse effects can occur at varying amounts. Guarana, another active ingredient in energy drinks contains caffeine in addition to small amounts of theobromine, theophylline, and tannins, is also recognized as safe by the FDA, despit the fact that it may lead to caffeine toxicity when combined with caffeine. Alternatives that can boost one’s energy while posing less health risks to the individual Prior to the introductiuon of energy drinks on the local market, other practices have been utilized to boost one’s performance and enhance one’s physical health. The body can feel energized without having to consume an ounce of the popular energy drinks now available in supermarkets and wholesales islandwide. One such practice is exercising. Moderate exercises can be done such a walking, biking or taking group exercise class as a means of boosting physical, menatl and social health. Beverages that contains less sugars, caffeine and other ingredients that energy drinks does can also be consumed.
