...THE GLENCOE LITERATURE LIBRARY Study Guide for To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee i Meet Harper Lee at the same university. In 1949, however, she withdrew and moved to New York City with the goal of becoming a writer. While working at other jobs, Lee submitted stories and essays to publishers. All were rejected. An agent, however, took an interest in one of her short stories and suggested she expand it into a novel. By 1957 she had finished a draft of To Kill a Mockingbird. A publisher to whom she sent the novel saw its potential but thought it needed reworking. With her editor, Lee spent two and a half more years revising the manuscript. By 1960 the novel was published. In a 1961 interview with Newsweek magazine, Lee commented: Writing is the hardest thing in the world, . . . but writing is the only thing that has made me completely happy. To Kill a Mockingbird was an immediate and widespread success. Within a year, the novel sold half a million copies and received the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Within two years, it was turned into a highly acclaimed film. Readers admire the novel’s sensitive and probing treatment of race relations. But, equally, they enjoy its vivid account of childhood in a small rural town. Summing up the novel’s enduring impact in a 1974 review, R. A. Dave called To Kill a Mockingbird . . . a movingly human drama of the jostling worlds—of children and adults, of innocence and experience, of kindness and cruelty, of love and hatred, of humor...

...To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Atticus is a kind person who believes everyone should get a chance even if it could hurt him and his family. To kill a mockingbird is about the life of a little girl named scout and how her father is a lawyer that helped a black man in court. They were made fun of and hurt but still got through.Atticus should take a stand because he has courage and he is kind. The first reason is Atticus has courage for standing up for Tom Robinson even though he will be made fun of. “ In Maycomb grown men stood outside in the front yard for only two reasons death and politics. Jem and I went to the front door, But Atticus called Go back in the house”(Lee 193). This shows that Atticus stood up to Heck Tate and men who wanted to take Tom back to the county jail. Atticus also protected his kids. Atticus has reasons for taking up for Tom. “The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town. I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature. I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again”(Lee 100). This shows Atticus took this case...

...Live in Legacy, Live a Life! A saying from Mary Anne Radmacher says “Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I'll try again tomorrow.” Many people want to achieve success in life, but it is easier said than done. There are so many distractions that it can be challenging to discipline one's self to accomplish a monumental goal. By keeping the faith and courage in yourself, you can dramatically increase your chances of becoming successful in whatever you choose to pursue. This is it! Courage! Courage is what Jesse Robredo takes for him to be successful. For trials and difficulties he encountered, he tried to do his best, and he did not give up even if a failure hinders him along the way to success. He provides the most appropriate model for every one of us to impersonate; but, is it only Jesse that can do such a thing? Is it only him who can leave a legacy and make a difference to everyone’s life? Jesse Robredo lived in a very simple way. Stories abound of how Jesse was so unassuming, dressed always modestly, lived in an ordinary house, had simple taste in food, and were always comfortable. The disability of his father did not affect Jesse’s way of living, but it gives him more courage to do his best for his family. Although not given all he wanted in life, he was raised and filled with love and well care of his father. The teaching of his father became a guide of Jesse into his daily life. Even in a very simple...

...person is facing a problem. When life gets tough and unyielding, it is better to ignore the problem. Why do you need to stress out over something that does not concern or benefit you in anyway? Why would you even want to care? That statement brings this sort of mentality to society and is the cause for many of the pain and sufferings in this world. Do you think that hunger and poverty would exist if everyone cared? Are the suffering not humans too that we can afford to turn a blind eye to what’s already in front of us? There are many ways to fix a problem; believe it or not, ignorance actually makes the situation worse. The problem will always exist if it hadn’t been dealt with, the question is if you will have the courage to face it. Courage isn’t the solution to everything. One may be the bravest soul around but may also be the most idiotic. The best way to face a problem is to “know thy enemy.” This method takes careful planning and extensive study on the subject though the results will be to your favour. Always remember the saying, “knowledge is power”; the more one is knowledgeable on the subject, the more opportunities present themselves and it will just come down to deciding the best course of action. A knowledgeable person will face a problem by exploiting its weaknesses and striking while the iron is hot. Timing and knowing where to strike are essential in solving a problem efficiently. Mush like in boxing, it takes a huge amount of courage to hit but it takes wits to know...

...Defining a Parent Growing up in a single-parent home for all of my life, I’ve learned a lot about parenting. Being a parent is a role that is often underestimated. Parents seldom realize the impact that they have on their kids, and how they can impact the kids’ lives for the better or worse. The world we live in today defines a parent by the house they live in and the car they drive. Being a good parent these days is based off of qualities that are unimportant and unrelated to actually being a good parent. Contrary to popular belief, this is not the way it should be done. Regardless of money and power, a parent is defined by their love, their ability to forgive, and their supportiveness. Parents love for their kids can make a huge difference in their lives. If this love is only temporary, or when their kids do something right or well, that can emotionally hurt the kids worse than many may realize. Conditional love will act as the root of all evil in a relationship between a parent and their kid. It shows the kid that they will be loved based off of what they do and how well they do it, not because of who they are. Unconditional love however, can make all the difference in a relationship. Kids who are loved unconditionally learn that they also should love unconditionally, and that it is the greatest kind of love. They learn that they are loved because of who they are and not what they’ve done. As Margaret Paul explained, “Our children become a mirror of our own behavior, discounting...

...sorts of characterization: "static" and "dynamic." A static character, in this vocabulary, is one that does not undergo important change in the course of the story, remaining essentially the same at the end as he or she was at the beginning. A dynamic character, in contrast, is one that does undergo an important change in the course of the story. More specifically, the changes that we are referring to as being "undergone" here are not changes in circumstances, but changes in some sense within the character in question -- changes in insight or understanding or changes in commitment, in values. The change at stake in this distinction is a change "in" the character of the character. In the stories a soilders home by Ernest Hemmingway and A Good Man is Hard to find by Flannery O connor we see this occur. Many people worry about what happens during war but no one realizes what happens to the young people coming back from war. The young people that go to war will change them dramatically when they come back. In the short story “Soldier’s Home”, by E. Heimingway, he writes about a young man’s after war experience, returning home and into society. In another short story called “Speaking of Courage”, by Tim O’Brien, he too, explores the after effects of war and how it can impact a young person’s life. The short stories, “Soldier’s Home”, by E. Heimingway and “Speaking of Courage”, by Tim O’Brien are more differences than similarities. There are a lot of similarities between the two...

I believe that thinking/creating an idea for something is the hardest part --- making it become real is much easier. Creativity is something that almost everyone can accomplish; almost everyone is capable of thinking outside their box and looking at things from a different perspective/approach if they put their mind to it. ...an ethnic and racial makeup most reflective of American society. Each individual brings a set of values and attitudes that have been cultivated over many years. Additionally, these values and attitudes are still being shaped and refined with each new experience. Many of you have strong memories about recent events in your lives, such as promotion, schooling, a new baby, or a transfer. These events and ones yet to come, serve to shape your values and attitudes for the future. However, values and attitudes do not automatically change just because someone puts on an Army uniform. Some values and attitudes, when coupled with a lack of awareness, or insensitivity about others that are different from ourselves, can produce confrontations, anger, and even violence. It is imperative all soldiers and civilian employees recognize and manage their differences so they do not interfere with the Army's mission effectiveness or ability to fight and win on the battlefield. ...Many of us have a life purpose – it is what motives us to take action. It is our way of understanding our role in life, and why we are here. Recent research has shown that how we see ourselves in the larger world affects our mental health, and how we relate to others (LaBier, 2015). Furthermore, studies from UC Berkeley and UC Irvine found that people who have the “sensation of being part of something much larger than themselves” and created purpose and sense of meaning in their life, experienced “fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety” (LaBier, 2015). In other words, finding purpose in life increases emotional well-being, and just plain feels good. But how does this relate to marketing? Here is an example: Ford Motor Company is one of the largest industry leaders in automotive. With almost 200,000 employees and 67 plants worldwide, it manufactures and distributes automobiles across six continents (Business Wire, 2016). In the early 20th century, Ford was also the largest employer of African Americans in the auto industry, and has a long history of “supporting the African American community”, known as a company that builds communities by “creating positive social change” (Business Wire, 2016). Ford has been an integral part of Men of Courage, a national program that honors the accomplishments of African American men. In addition, Ford has established the Ford Volunteer Corps, which enlists Ford employees and retirees to work on local projects to strengthen communities. In this...

...HONOR, TRUST, INTEGRITY, OBEDIENCE TO ORDERS. Honor starts with being honest with oneself and being truthful and sincere in all our actions. An honorable individual does not delude, confuse, or deny himself the truth. People describe heroes as "being with honor" or "honorable." A hero is merely one way of gaining that high respect. By showing courage and wisdom where others faltered, a person gains a sense of respect among others. Slowly, as good deeds accumulate, that respect turns into something more, and without knowing the time or place, a person has gained his honor. How can an individual or team be truly mission capable if he/they cannot accept the facts the way they are. If a person is honest with himself, then not even ignorance can be used as an excuse, because actions could have been made to prevent that ignorance. Ignorance takes away proper mission readiness, good training, good health, good work ethics, and good unit cohesion. Taking away all this things makes us ineffective and incapable to accomplish our mission not just as individuals or Administrators but as United States Marines as well. Noticing a problem and deciding to take action involves Honor and courage. Those problems are probably an example of or a cause from ignorance. To ignore or reinforce a problem, or to prevent someone else from solving a problem, is dishonorable. It takes away from Mission Readiness. It promotes further ignorance of the individual and the individuals’ peers and/or subordinates...
