In the Story Wednesday Wars by Gary Schmidt, Holling Hoodhood and Meryl Lee Kolowski are working together on a history project when Meryl Lee’s father, Mr. Kowalski, comes home and tells them the horrible news that Martin Luther King Jr., had been shot and killed in Memphis while helping striking sanitation workers. Both Holling and Meryl Lee’s fathers are affected by this major event.
