How Does Junie B. Jones: Ineffective Or Effective?

Junie B. Jones is thought to be a beloved fictional character that played an essential role in my childhood education. The Junie B. Jones series captivated my attention and motivated me to read as a child. As an adult, I still enjoy the many adventures Junie B. partakes in such as an encounter with her mushy gushy valentine with Warren, or her first day of first grade. Despite Junie B.’s content, it is hard to overlook the constant violations of standard English rules. As an Aspiring educator, I am beginning to wonder whether the author, Barbara Park’s grammar choices are more defective than effective. It is obvious while indulging in the Junie B. series that Parks is purposefully making grammatical mistakes such as misspelling words, and using improper sentence structures. The big question for Parks is “why do you chose to commit these acts of…show more content… Junie B. Jones misspells quite a few words while writing in her journal. In her first journal she misspells mustache by spelling it like “mustash”, but miraculously she corrects herself and spells mustache the correct way. FINSH. Although Barbara Parks misspells these words, I think she does justice by having the correct spelling of the word also on the page as in the incident with mustache. Many early learners don’t understand silent letters so they put down letters that make sense. In Junie B.’s case, she did not hear the “e” at the end of mustache, and therefore does not put it, as most children don’t. It is unbeknown to me how Junie B. all of a sudden hears the “c” instead of the “s”. In the book, I predict she asked her teacher how to spell the word, and she corrected it then. Despite how Junie B. arrived at the correct spelling of the word mustache it is important that she did. It is also important that Barbara Parks shows students the incorrect spelling crossed out, and then replaced with the correct spelling; this is a teaching moment for
