Part 4 starts off with Liesel finding out about Ilsa Hermann and how Ilsa is a very kind lady but is depressed about how she lost her son. Later on, Liesel’s book falls down the Amper River. Rudy swam in the freezing water to get the book; just for Liesel. “On many counts, taking a boy like Rudy was robbery—so much life, so much to live for—yet somehow, I’m certain he would have loved to see the frightening rubble and the swelling of the sky on the night he passed away. He’d have cried and turned and smiled if only he could have seen the book thief on her hands and knees, next to his decimated body. He’d have been glad to witness her kissing his dusty, bomb-hit lips.” This shows Rudy as a developing character in the story, who is a kind hearted man and does everything for Liesel. …show more content…
Rudy is shows to be a very straight forwarded boy. “During the nights, both Liesel Meminger and Max Vandenberg would go about their other similarity. In their separate rooms, they would dream their nightmares and wake up, one with a scream in drowning sheets, the other with a gasp for air next to a smoking fire.” This shows how much Liesel and Max are alike and how they get along with the past that they have had. This is also a new relationship for Liesel as she finds someone with common interests and same problems. Many events occurred until a big one came. NSDAP officer had come to check the basement for a possible air raid shelter. “They listened to Nazi footsteps in the basement. There was the sound of measuring tape. Liesel could not ward off the thought of Max sitting beneath the steps, huddled around his sketchbook, hugging it to his chest.” These shows how big of a deal were the Hubberman’s were doing when they had kept a Jew in their basement. They knew the consequences of what they were doing, but this was only to keep Hans’ promise to
