Western civilization has evolved through the works of many people, as well as techniques and methods used during this period. In particular, art has given the representation of this time, which is portrayed by each artist in different ways. One of the most significant figures in western art is Michelangelo. Some of his most famous works include the painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, his sculptures of The Pietà and David. Through his significant art pieces and sculptures, Michelangelo has widely influenced western civilization. Because of his contributions, he defined western art and he represented the Renaissance time period.

At four years until completion, this was by far his biggest project throughout his entire career. Julius Ceasar commissioned Michelangelo to decorate the ceiling of the chief Vatican chapel, the Sistine in 1508. His introduction of dramatic scenes that set the standard for the future. The elaborate painting with hundreds of figures was arranged in a framing system that was Michelangelo’s design. Michelangelo’s work appeals with the Catholic crowd due to the figures involved and the thought and motivation behind it. Perhaps the most religious of his pieces is The Pietà. This sculpture attracted mostly northern european artists. Pietà is defined as to pity or to give compassion, and represents Mary sorrowfully coping with the dead body of her son on her lap. This sculpture was commissioned by a French Cardinal that lived in Rome at the time. It is unbelievable how Michelangelo made marble seem like real skin, and how their faces were filled with such incredible emotion.
