Ebola is a horrible disease which is plaguing West Africa, in the countries of Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea. There have been multiple outbreaks in these countries, and we can only imagine what pain the people living in these communities went through. Seeing their friends, family, and communities die. The economy in West Africa has also suffered, and those not infected still have to deal with unemployment, loss of food stability, and many more challenges to living a happy life. Ebola’s victims usually die during a short two week period. These last two weeks are not pleasant ones. Ebola is especially dangerous, because it is very smart. The first things ebola targets are the cells that control the immune system, known as the dendritic cells, that cell then becomes a factory that makes more ebola virus. It send signals that trick the immune system cells to kill themselves. It also affect the “guard cells” of the body, the Macrophages and the Monocytes, this then messes up the blood vessels; basically, creating internal bleeding.It also attacks the liver, causing more internal bleeding. Finally the immune system sends all of it’s resources, this is called a cytokine storm, this helps kill the virus; however, it causes a lot of collateral damage in the process. Because of ebola the economy is suffering. There is a loss in gross domestic output, decline in foreign investment, rise in unemployment, as well as a fall in livelihood. Household income has decreased, and financial reserves are being used up. Two million children have not been attending school in Sierra Leone because of school closures. The Social effects are easy to infer, the people are heartbroken, depressed, and frustrated. The people around them are dying and there is little they can do to stop it. Anyone would act this way if they were in such a awful position.
