How Has Setting Been Used to Convey Ideas in "The Pedestrian"

The idea that technology and progress is seen to be the detriment of humanity has been constructed through the convention of setting. The construction of the futuristic dystopian city in A.D. 2053 reveals a world where machines have complete control over humanity. Throughout the story, various descriptive language, metaphor and imagery has been used to express a sense of eeriness and hostile environment where humanity has virtually ceased to exist. For example, the streets are described as “dry river beds”, people sit “dead” in their “tomblike” homes and walking through the neighbourhood is much the same to walking through a “graveyard”. The sterile environment of the city conveys a sense of loneliness that is devoid of any individual or human touch where a “murmur of laughter” was seen as odd. “Magazines and books didn't sell anymore. Everything went on in the tomblike houses at night now…” expresses the idea of how technology has driven humanity to obsession, cooped in their ‘tombs, ill-lit by television light” controlled by their “viewing screen”.

Setting has also been used to challenge ideas about technology’s ability to reduce our capability to be human and in control of our individuality. “He whispered to every house on every side as he moved…” and “The street was silent and long and empty,” reveals the lack of humanity in a world where communication and human interaction is to no prevail. The police’s utter surprise and suspicious tone when he says, “Walking, just walking, walking? Walking where? For what?” insinuates that Mr. Leonard is seen as a threat because he is fundamentally different from everyone else. In addition, “As he had expected, there was no one, no one in the car at all…” is another example of the mechanic and robotic setting of the city where machines have dominated human intelligence and humans are exempt from performing the simple act of driving. In short, the setting has been used to effectively foreshadow the frightening future where humanity itself would serve as a sacrifice to machines.

Ray Bradbury's Use Of Literary Devices In The Veldt

...Bradbury’s use of literary devices Ray Bradbury uses unique literary device to help form his stories, which gives us a better understanding of what he is trying to convey in his stories.Ray Bradbury's writings all originate with an idea. After this idea has been established, he creates character to personify this idea. To better understand the close relationship between his characters, also his major ideas or a theme which appears throughout his stories is Bradbury's imagery. One example of literary devices is personification, which gives non-human things human-like qualities. An example of this is  in Bradbury's story The Veldt when Bradbury writes , "Until this day, how well the house had kept its peace. How carefully it had inquired, "who goes there?...

The Effectiveness of Mccloud’s Appeal

...The most common art forms artists and writers utilize to express their ideas and creativity are fine arts, novels, and films. They are widely accepted and pedestrian. All three have renowned awards ceremonies for the best in their field, displays in galleries and museums, recognition in the news through the media, and have classes teaching or analyzing them in schools. Against traditional media that have already achieved international public acceptance, a relatively new, and different art form like comics, does not stand a chance in gaining the respect it deserves. However, there are some people who have tried to build a reputation for comics and help others better understand them. Scott McCloud’s work Understanding Comics is his audacious attempt to address and overcome the general public’s ignorance about comics. However, the various characteristics of his book such as the comic book format, dialogue, and tone prove to effectively convey the definition and understanding of comics to a younger audience such as teenagers and college students rather than older adults, the parents and grandparents of the younger audience. If only certain groups of people are likely to accept McCloud’s method, then his intentions of establishing a better reputation for comics have failed. At first it may seem that creating a book enlightening the reader about comics in the comic book format is an exceedingly clever method. If the reader could easily comprehend what McCloud was trying to say about...

...Working safely with trees recommended practices for the amenity tree industry WORKING SAFELY WITH TREES Foreword The amenity tree industry presents a challenging and changeable work environment associated with a high rate of injuries and several fatalities – the majority involving unexpected falling trees and branches. Tree-related fatalities were examined in depth as part of the Work Related Fatalities Program – a joint venture involving the Victorian WorkCover Authority, the State Coroner’s Office and VIOSH Australia (University of Ballarat). The Tree Felling Safety Group (TFSG) was formed as a result of this work to promote health and safety in forestry, arboriculture and urban tree industries. The TFSG includes representatives from industry, local government, unions and WorkSafe Victoria – the operational name for the health and safety arm of the Victorian WorkCover Authority. The Group is keen to see potential solutions implemented to help to prevent death and serious injury involving tree workers. The development of this guidance material was a TFSG initiative. The result is a practical and user-friendly guide produced by industry representatives that aims to improve workers’ awareness and understanding of common hazards, risks and safety requirements, while assisting employers to meet their legal obligations. I urge everyone working in the amenity tree industry to use this booklet as a constant reference point, particularly supervisors and team...

Strategic Directions

...and Values Paul Olk, Peter Rainsford, and Tsungting Chung ncreased globalization and the incorporation of many new information technology (IT) tools have enhanced the need for top management to set a clear strategic vision for a company. As market demands and the ability to communicate globally encourage companies to continue to expand into new geographical and product markets—and as they also enter into long-term buyer-supplier relationships or contract out activities previously conducted internally—companies are spread more thinly. This creates a challenge of how to coordinate all of the activities conducted around the globe and by partner organizations. While sophisticated software programs (e.g., enterprise resource planning [ERP]) or intranet capabilities enhance internal communication, these are not adequate. Establishing and maintaining a consistent strategic direction for the company begins with setting a clear vision for the company. A strategic vision provides multiple benefits to a company. First, it presents a broadly shared sense of organizational direction and purpose. Direction is needed because few organizations have achieved greatness by being all things to all consumers. To instill a purpose, most successful companies achieved their leadership position by adopting a vision far greater than their resource base and competencies would allow (de Kluyver & Pearce, 2002; Hamel & Prahalad, 1989). A vision also provides a framework for the organization’s missions...

Shopability

...replenish stocks on a just-in-time basis. Stores can now do a much better job of providing consumers with the right product at the right place at the right time. The news is not as good on the demand side. Retailers continue to have difficulty creating shopping environments that engage consumers’ needs and convert these desires to purchases. One critical concern is with product proliferation and duplication. Manufacturers rely heavily on line extensions to increase volume, and retailers (often mistakenly) believe stocking more products means selling more products. This has led to an explosion in the number of products available in many retail channels. In the 1950’s, a typical U.S. grocery store carried about 5,000 different items; in the 1990’s, the number topped 30,000. Today, a supercenter carries upwards of 100,000 products! This dramatic increase in the number of products and the expanding footprint of retail stores has made it increasingly difficult for consumers to find their way through stores, differentiate between brands, and assess product quality. In a 2001 consumer survey reported by Marketing Week, 75% of consumers agreed, “These days there are so many products and services that it’s often hard to choose which is best for me.” Further, 78% of consumers said, “Companies like to pretend that their brands are really different, but actually there’s rarely any substantial difference between...

...*** (A) IMPORTANCE OF MARKETING Marketing is a very important aspect in business since it contributes greatly to the success of the organization. Production and distribution depend largely on marketing. Marketing covers advertising, promotions, public relations, and sales. Since the goal of marketing is to make the product or service widely known and recognized to the market, marketers must be creative in their marketing activities. In this competitive nature of many businesses, getting the product noticed is not that easy. Strategically, the business must be centered on the customers more than the products. Although good and quality products are also essential, the buying public still has their personal preferences. If you target more of their needs, they will come back again and again and even bring along recruits. If you push more on the product and disregard their wants and the benefits they can get, you will lose your customers in no time. The sad thing is that getting them back is the hardest part. 1. Marketing Promotes Product Awareness to the Public Getting the product or service recognized by the market is the primary goal of marketing. No business possibly ever thought of just letting the people find out about the business themselves, unless you have already established a reputation in the industry. But if you are a start-out company, the only means to be made known is to advertise and promote but the important thing is that product and company information is...
