The launch of the computer had an enormous impact on American history, it was not only the computer that launched but also the internet which brought diverse ways for people to interact with one another. James Comey said, “Technology has forever changed the world we live in. We’re online, in one way or another, all day long. Our phones and computers have become reflections of our personalities, or interests, and our identities. The world we now live in, we are constantly tweeting, texting, Googling and checking e-mail, technology addiction is a real concern for kids, adolescence, and adults. “We live a contradiction: Insisting that our world is increasingly complex, we nevertheless have created a communications culture that has decreased the time available for us to sit and think, uninterrupted” (507). There is an example of a person who looks at his “BlackBerry to give him a sense of life” (508). Society is not taking the time to put their devices down and just decompress. “We are learning to see ourselves as cyborgs, at one with our devices” (508). Practically, our entire lives are in those alluring pocket-size devices, and we cannot or do not spend enough time away from these machines to focus on things that matter. When the audience thinks of the word tethered they can imagine being chained, or fastened to something and causing them to lose touch, being the result of too much technology time. This leaves them questioning the type of person she is talking about. You think, “Is it me?” She has made the argument that there are possible effects on people and their relationships with others due to this 21st-century technology. The article has many valid points, with a negative connotation to help create an emotional appeal but, it does not provide any scientific data to support her claims. There were many opinions and assumptions made by Turkle throughout her article that were her own personal views and stories but lacked evidence and actual data. Turkle is able to convince her audience that there’s a necessary consideration to take into how people are allowing technology to control their lives, whether they are aware of it or not. Turkle’s argument gave a strong warning how technology is changing our society and how easily influenced we can become if we are not paying attention.
