“Fair is foul, and foul is fair” (Shakespeare, I.i.11). The three witches in Macbeth state that what is good, is bad and what is bad, is good. They live in a world where everyone is not what they seem. Appearance versus reality is a theme that repeatedly occurs throughout the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare. In this story, which takes place in Scotland in the early seventeenth century, three witches tell Macbeth that in the future, he will be king. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth begin to plot King Duncan’s murder so that Macbeth can be king. The three witches, Macbeth, and Lady Macbeth all prove that looks can be deceiving in both the play Macbeth and in society. To begin, the three witches use their powers to tell Macbeth his future, however, …show more content…
For example, when given the news about Duncan’s death, she pretends to faint. Lady Macbeth says, “Help me hence, ho!”. Macduff replies, “Look to the lady” (Shakespeare, II.iii.112- 113). When Lady Macbeth faints, she is utilizing the stereotype that claims women are more weak compared to men. Since she is a woman and seems so innocent, no one would expect her to be capable of contributing to the murder of the king. No one would ever even consider Lady Macbeth as a suspect because she is a female. However, she is the one who planted the idea of killing Duncan in Macbeth’s mind. Another example of a woman who is seen as incapable of something because of her gender is Hillary Clinton. She is running for the presidential election currently, and some people do not take her seriously. Producer and recording artist T.I. stated, “...But the president? It’s kinda like, I just know that women make rash decisions emotionally…”(ew.com, 1). T.I. is saying that because she is a woman, Clinton would not be a favorable president. He says that she would be a weak president because women typically let their emotions control them. Likewise, because she is a woman, Lady Macbeth is assumed to be innocent and feeble. Both are being underestimated by their appearances. The expectations of how both genders should behave affects both Clinton and Lady Macbeth. Evidently, both women are underestimated because they are …show more content…
For example, Macbeth appears to be a royal thane to King Duncan. He says, “The service and the loyalty I owe, In doing it pays itself” (Shakespeare, I.iv.22-23). Macbeth is expressing his loyalty to the king. What Duncan does not know is that Macbeth already has homicidal thoughts toward him. Therefore, while Macbeth appears to be loyal, he will actually become Duncan’s killer. To continue, this relates to Julius Caesar and his friend. Caesar was the ruler of the Roman Empire when suddenly his friend, Brutus, stabbed him in the back. Caesar said “Et tu, Brute?” (Shakespeare, III.i.). That means “And you, Brutus?”. Out of everyone in the world, Caesar certainly did not expect his close friend to be responsible for his death. This is just like how Duncan would not expect Macbeth to kill him. Betrayal of close friends and family who were supposedly loyal is extremely

Lady Macbeth

...force behind any successful man. However, a woman can also use her strong influence in a negative way. This can be seen in Macbeth, where Lady Macbeth is the evil force behind Macbeth's cruelty and evil doings. In Shakespeare's Macbeth, Lady Macbeth is the main reason that Macbeth is transformed from a noble, respected Thane into a ruthless, murderous character. Lady Macbeth fuels his inner desire for power and brings forth his greed and ambition, which both eventually lead to his downfall. The tactics that Lady Macbeth use to drive her husband to this downfall are manipulation, dominance, and her evil nature. Lady Macbeth manipulates Macbeth into believing that he is a coward and a bad husband, which persuades him to agree to the murder of King Duncan. She dwells on the fact that he is a coward, when she says "My hands are of your colour, but I shame/ to wear a heart so white" (2.2.64-65). This instills feelings of embarrassment into his mind, and manipulates him into believing that if he does not murder King Duncan, he will be a weak, cowardly man. Not only is she challenging his manhood, by appearing to be the stronger and braver of the two, but also, by calling his heart "white", she is criticizing his cowardice. The fact that his wife is undermining his masculinity causes Macbeth to want to be stronger, and not to appear weak and timid. When Lady Macbeth yells "Infirm of purpose! Give me the daggers. The sleeping and the dead/ are but as pictures. 'Tis the eye of childhood/...

...that is deemed “bad” in this society. Most people have done something that has “haunted” them for the rest of their life. That one action has then turned them into someone else because of an ignorant selfish decision. When this act is supported by a friend or a spouse, it is made that much more okay to go upon it, because it isn’t blamed on only one. If one goes in, the other one will follow, whether it’s good or bad. In the play Macbeth, Macbeth is supported by his wife, Lady Macbeth to kill the king, Duncan and grab the royalty for themselves. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth have many similar and different characteristics. This couple ate both egotistical, see things from face-value, and very power-hungry. While they are both very manipulative, Macbeth is easier to manipulate. Lady Macbeth is eventually guilt-ridden, while guilt never affects Macbeth. Lady Macbeth is also fine with only killing Duncan, whereas Macbeth murders everyone who he feels will take his royalty from him. The witches tell Macbeth the first three prophecies; Thane of Glams, Thane of Cawdor, and The future King. He is confused at first, but then called the witches to come back, and tell him more, this is his ego growing. Macbeth

...Holsclaw English IV James Byrd November, 10, 2013 The Witch Trio’s Infamous Chant “Fair is foul, and foul is fair” and its Relevance to Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Macbeth One of the most important lines in the drama The Tragedy of Macbeth by William Shakespeare originates from one of the last lines in Act I, Scene I. The three witches speak the simple line “Fair is foul, and foul is fair,” (I: i, 10) shortly before they disperse. This quotation becomes a prophecy as well as an underlying warning foreshadowing the rest of the drama. “Fair is foul, and foul is fair” (I: i, 10) can be interpreted as saying good is bad and bad is good. The quotation leads the reader to question their standpoint on the good and bad depicted in the drama. This quotation is a major line in the drama because it implies that some of the characters are not who they claim to be. This quotation affects the Witches because although they speak of the future, they do not seem to affect its course. In Macbeth's case, the prophecies serve only to suggest the future, not to affect it. They do not predict that he will commit murder to become king but simply that he will become king. For example, they hail Macbeth as king by saying, "All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!" (I: iii, 50). So furthermore, even if the witches did not exist, Macbeth would still have taken the throne due to fate. When the line comes from the witches, the reader assumes at first that they are speaking plainly. That the line means...

The Prison of Marriage

...The Prison of Marriage Each morning that we wake up, life presents us with many choices. Some people are conscious of these choices, others are not. Whether one is a college student in search of a major or the man in line at a deli, the opportunity for decision seems solely one’s own. However, the surrounding factors of that person’s life will inevitably affect the decision at hand. Often, without knowing it, we are placed in a role that life, in general, expects us to fulfill. Once we find ourselves in a role, it is difficult to displace ourselves from it, and as a result, we rely on this role to aid us in our decisions. Professor of psychology Philip K. Zimbardo finds that people are obedient in accepting roles assigned by others. Zimbardo’s “Stanford Prison Experiment” discusses male college students placed in a prison experiment and assigned the role of either “prisoner” of “guard.” Zimbardo claims to have “sought to understand more about the process by which people called ‘prisoners’ lose their liberty, civil rights, independence and privacy, while those called ‘guards’ gain social power by accepting the responsibility for controlling and managing the lives of their dependent charges” (365). Zimbardo concludes that the roles of guard and prisoner can be seen in many realms of life. Zimbardo suggests that sexism, racism, and shyness are, for many people, prisons of the mind. Furthermore, Zimbardo feels that marriage can be described as a prison: The physical institution...

Ideas About Macbeth

...Key ideas in Macbeth Macbeth is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. It is mainly set in Scotland and the play dramatizes the damaging physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power for their own sake. Macbeth explores many themes and ideas of the olden where people had many supernatural beliefs (e.g. withes) and other beliefs such as the kings’ power was believed to be directly given by god and therefore monarchs were answerable only to god. An important idea expressed in Macbeth is the guilt which is felt by few of the characters in the play, prominently being featured on Macbeth himself. Macbeth’s guilt is shown immediately after killing Duncan, in which Macbeth's senses are heightened and he is paranoid about being caught, which is why he jumps at every noise, 'How is't with me, when every noise appals me?'(Act 2, scene II), looking at his bloody hands, He wishes that he could take away his eyes that witnessed his crime. This quote and Duncan's blood is symbolic of Macbeth's guilt, in which Macbeth uses a metaphor, or indirect comparison, to compare his guilt for killing Duncan to blood on his hands. Another scene in the play where guilt is evident is when Lady Macbeth is sleepwalking and seems to be washing her hands, saying 'Out, damned spot! Out, I say!’(Act V scene I). These words by her clearly show her guilt coming to the surface as she sleeps and dreams. In this state, she attempts to clean...
