How music connects to time
Before I get write about the music I grew up with I wanted to say that this is the best assignment so far. I love music not only listening to it but writing it and singing it as well.
Here goes, when I was growing up I listened to a lot of music from the 50’s and 60’s my parents grew up during this time and loved this type of music I enjoyed this type of music and still do. I heard songs from Leslie Gore, Elvis, Dion and the Belmont’s Ray Patterson just to name a few. Sometimes I would cry and sometimes I would be happy depending on what song I was listening to let me explain. When I heard the song Sunshine Lollipops and Rainbows from Leslie Gore I would be happy I thought that if we had sunshine rainbows and lollipops (I love lollipops) then the world would be peaceful and everyone would want to live in it. the song that I always made me cry was tell Laura I love her by Ray Patterson the reason I cried was it was sad it’s a song about how a guy is in love with a girl and all he wants to do is marry her so he decides that the only way to get her a ring is to enter a stock car race well he dies while he is racing and Laura is left alone without the man she loves. I think that if I had to reflect on how these songs helped me through childhood I would have to say that they helped me to understand that life is not about sunshine rainbows and lollipops but about love and death.
Leslie Gore: Sunshine Lollipops and Rainbows
Ray Patterson: Tell Laura I love her
During my adolescence I listened to The New Kids on the Block they were my idol I had all of their tapes (I grew up in the 80’ and 90’s before Cd’s). I can honestly say that I was not a rebel no matter how hard I tried to be one it just never worked so for me listening to this group was a way to fit in. it helped me to understand what I thought boys wanted in a girlfriend. Especially when you heard the song you got the Right stuff. It gave me a sense of belonging when my friends and I would hang out in the morning before school and we could talk about the newest song they wrote. Some of would sing the song and pretend we were the group. This was the fun time before class it kind of helped us through the day.

I think that at this point in my life I can say that there are so many songs that give me comfort. However I think that the one that gives me the most comfort nowadays is Jesus Take the Wheel by Carrie Underwood. If you have ever heard this song it’s about how people can lose faith when bad things happen and how praying helps. This song helps me to realize that every time I hear my daughter sing it to me. It also helps when I hear the artist sing it to, but somehow hearing my 15 year old daughter sing it I feel so much better like the world is in God’s hands and I have nothing to worry about. My life is very stressful between trying to find a job helping my oldest daughter get ready for her wedding school Girl Scouts and everything else that this song seems to help me to wash away the stress and let God take over.

I love the songs from the 80’s this type of music has always made me happy yes there are sad songs in that era also but I think that the song Girls Just Want to Have Fun bye Cyndi Lauper has always given me happiness. The reason is that it made me think that girls can have fun to not only boys. Growing up with a younger brother was hard he got to do things that my sister and I could not do. So when this song came out it made us think that we as girls need to have fun to why do boys get to have fun and we don’t. So this song I think helped my sister and I get our point across to our parents that we may be girls but it’s okay for us to have fun and enjoy life to. I think that this song not only helped us but may have helped other girls get their points across to their parents. We as girls and women have to stick together.
