What do you think about when you hear the word processed foods? Most of us make the logical connection to junk food. We are informed from a young age that, yes, “junk food” is bad but we don’t know the reasons why or what else besides the typical burgers and fries is bad for you. And the very scary thing is that some things that are in our very own kitchen cabinets and refrigerators have cancerogenous and other illness-induced properties. And a lot of us don’t even know of this simply because we are never informed. If you look closely at the things you’re adding to your shopping cart, you’ll realize that almost 70% has been processed and altered dramatically from its original state. Anything you have that is canned, boxed, bagged or jarred is a ticking bomb in your life expectancy. The more you eat foods like this, the shorter your life expectancy will be. People who are known to eat home cooked meals with organic ingredients have been known live decades longer than people who don’t. Our bodies aren’t designed to digest the types of food we have been putting into our bodies. When humans first started evolving, there were no McDonalds, no boxed Macaroni, no dehydrated noodles in a cup, or grocery store where you could just walk in and have aisles and aisles of packaged and boxed food, ready to eat. You never heard of a cave man dying from diabetes or clogged arteries, so then why is the human body today not able to have the same sustenance it once had?

Is Our Food Killing Us? is an investigation into the processed food products that make up the modern American diet and the affects these products are having on our health and well-being. Also, in many cases we are well aware of the health risks of diets rich in certain foods. Fast foods, heavily processed food-like products and convenience foods have been proven to cause obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancers. Even food products that claim to be “fat free” or “diet” contain artificial ingredients that can cause health problems such as migraine headaches. Our food may very well be killing us and yet we, as a nation, are not changing our eating habits. The intention was to find out why we choose to continue on the unhealthy paths that we are on. Information found in many articles and documentaries, including doctors’ and scientists’ statements, as well as nutritional information found on nearly every food label in the grocery store, explained what was in the foods we are eating, what it does to our bodies and what were our reasons for not making healthier choices. Factors such as food addiction, convenience, commercialism, false claims and income are some examples of why we may continue to eat poorly. This paper will examine all of these topics and some others. In a war more than just soldiers are killed. Other civilians will be killed and many of the soldiers don’t want to fight, they are just ordered too.
