...think that bunnies are the best, or that you should compare yourself against the person you were yesterday. I believe in something different, and something tough. I think that no matter how hard, no matter how taxing, you should never give up. Some people may want to give up when exercising or doing homework, but this is not the right answer. I am here to say that you should never give up if you want to do well. I chose this topic to be my This I Believe essay because it really means something to me, and I will show that in the rest of this speech. I have had many experiences teaching me to never give up, but the best ones are in sports. I wrestle and play water polo, and they both are physically exerting sports, with tough exercises and games. Also, I have had experiences in school and other places showing me the value of working through tough times, even if it is emotionally or mentally challenging. I want to teach people that you should not give up, no matter the challenges, no matter the threat, because once you have started something, you must see it through....

...sadness can make you question your own existence you have to push through and keep trying. Hughes uses symbolism to show that his life is "fine": "Life is fine, Fine as wine, Life is fine!" We all go through problems in life but some people don't like to show it, so they do simple things to cover the fact that they're sad like smiling and laughing, which often makes other people think that the other person is happy. It seems like Hughes' life is going well but anyone can seem to cover or hide their sadness while with other people or in public just like how you can use symbolism to mean or cover up another thing like sadness. Hughes also uses situational...

Robin 2004 R E S E ARCH P AP E R S E RI E S Leadership Excellence and the "Soft" Skills: Authenticity, Influence and Performance David L. Bradford & Carole S. Robin Graduate School of Business, Stanford University (working paper) Introduction While leaders need analytical competencies such as those associated with strategy, finance and all the planning processes, research on Emotional Intelligence (as reported by Goleman, ―What Makes a Leader?‖, HBR, 1998) suggests it is increasingly the "soft" skills that differentiate those who are highly successful from those who just get by. This shift in emphasis is largely due to a series of fundamental changes in organizations over the past decades. Increasingly, today's organizational realities are characterized by: High performance standards - Organizations can no longer survive over time by just "getting by." Global competition has raised the bar on the level of quality in products and service that is expected. And the rate of technological innovation demands speed, agility and ability to adapt by all parts of the organization. The leader no longer has all the answers - Knowledge and expertise is now distributed throughout the organization. Excellence is achieved when everybody's competencies are fully used. [In fact, the institution that is dependent on the solo brilliant leader is...

...I had heard about WorldCom’s massive fraud before, but never really read much about what actually happened. The thing that hit me the most from the book was how Cynthia Cooper’s life was affected after she discovered the fraud. I am going to talk about her decision and the consequences that followed, both good and bad. Throughout the paper, I will reference the list at the end of her book about what we can do to help sort through the tough times and make the right decisions. It is something everyone should read and try to follow. I always thought being a “whistleblower” was good thing. Until reading this book and hearing Mrs. Cooper’s words, I never realized all of the ramifications that came with making that decision. She had to deal with fear, stress, long trials, and depression. The news stations were calling her a whistleblower, even though she was just doing her job. Because she did her job, she costs the jobs of thousands of people. After the press release that certain WorldCom transfers were not made in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, the company laid off 17,000...

...the going gets tough, the tough get going! That’s what I said when my friend Bobby doubted me. I was at the skatepark in mid-august when i decided that I should learn how to double tailwhip. My freakishly tall, brown haired, red scooter having, Nike Air 2017 shoe wearing, blue shirted ,levi jeaned friend Liam thought I could totally land it. On the other hand Bobby,my black haired, mexican, crooked toothed, black scootered, gangster clothed friend, didn’t think I could land it. “Well” I thought to myself “I am going to land this double tail-whip today!” After what seemed like days it was clear to me how close I was to landing it. I was about as close as meeting George Washington in my gigantic mansion. So that was not very close because one George Washington is dead and two I am not rich. But do you want to know what I did? I kept on trying!!...

...individual you can share good times and bad times with them, and they will always love you in spite of it all. It is no longer about blood relations or heritage, it is about the connection between the two that makes them family”. This student’s definition is saying throughout the years the definition of family has changed. The most recent definition of family is spending the good times and the bad ties with and will always love you no matter the moment. Poets agree to this definition because in all their stories they say that Family is a joy to come home to to after a long, tough day at work and your family will always be there for you thru the good times and bad....

...Socratic Seminar Reflection Before the seminar, I liked the text The Scariest Thing I Know. I liked it since the text was descriptive and interesting to read, I also thought that there was a lot of hidden metaphor in the story which was interesting to decipher. My thoughts immediately after reading the text were that Kid Death was really a metaphor for Nick who had always hid behind a mask to appear frightening and cool but once you “took off his mask.” He was just another Geek like Kid Death. I also thought that the Angel must also be a metaphor for something, and I realized that it was a metaphor for the angel that had saved Nick. I thought that Kid Death and the Angel bundled together represented what we perceive as the “Devil and Angel on our shoulders.” The Devil is Kid Death and the angel being the angel. This showed nicks inner battle to either remain behind a mask and be cool like Kid Death and make Bad things happen. Or be good like the angel and not be so cool but still be good, in the end he chose the path of the Angel and this changed his life since he started being good and not always acting tough since he knew what happens if he does. Before the seminar, I had a pretty clear idea of what the subject of the story was. I remembered the general area of the subject of the story was to constantly travel the good path in life. In the scene near the end of the text where Nick was “frozen in time” and was looking at the angel saving his brother. He could choose...

...Outsiders Character Analysis Essay In the novel The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, Dally starts out as a young adult afraid to look weak and he changes into a brave, but lost person that doesn’t know how to cope with his emotions. In the beginning Dally seemed tough. In transition he is a brave and helpful person. In the end, Dally is someone who feels lost and ready to risk everything. Dally made a dramatic change from the beginning of this novel to the end. Dally started out as a bad boy who seemed very tough. When Ponyboy describes Dally in the beginning of the book he says, “He was tougher than the rest of us - tougher, colder, meaner. The shade of difference that separates a greaser from a hood wasn’t present in Dally. He was as wild as...

...Therefore, having a positive attitude through tough times is the best response. Don’t forget to always keep a positive attitude. First and foremost, Anne Frank is a great example of someone who keeps a positive attitude during tough times. Even though she was Jewish and had to go into hiding to avoid concentration camps, she still made the best of what she had. As long as she was with her family, she felt safe. Her and her sister had to share a room in the little annex they had to hide in, and it was only plain white walls. That wasn’t going to crush her spirit, so she decorated her room with the posters and postcards she had brought with. Anne Frank never gave up on hope, and neither should you. Another great example, is Winston Churchill. Churchill was ready to go to war and wasn’t going to give up. In the text, he says “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.”(Churchill, SS, paragraph 9) This shows how he will do anything and...
