...Similar things can be heard when looking at companies. A big trend currently in business is business growth. Many people in business rate the success of their business purely by how large and quickly they are growing. However, in business planning it is often too easy to overlook some of the dangers of growing a business. In order to have successful business growth, the business must have a plan. Part of that plan is to understand some of the problems that come with business growth and ensure they are not simply growing for growth’s sake. Bigger does not necessarily mean better, nor does growing bigger mean that the business is protected from the same problems (or perhaps more) that smaller companies deal with. CNBC has listed 10 mega companies that are no longer active companies (American’s Iconic Companies that Disappeared, 2015). Amoco was swallowed up by BP. Bethlehem Steel, the world’s second largest steel manufacturer, went bankrupt in 2001. Circuit City went bust in 2009. Compaq Computers was the largest supplier of PC systems in the US in the 90’s but no longer exists. Leeman Brothers with $600 billion in assets had the largest bankruptcy in US history in 2008, and is now defunct. And you can no longer “Love it at Levitz” since one of the largest furniture retailers in the country went under in 2007. MCI, Pan Am, Tower Records, Woolworth, and Washington Mutual were all on the CNBC list as well. Several other companies that are no longer in existence but were not...

...startup is a company designed to grow fast. Being newly founded does not in itself make a company a startup. Nor is it necessary for a startup to work on technology, or take venture funding, or have some sort of "exit." The only essential thing is growth. Everything else we associate with startups follows from growth. If you want to start one it's important to understand that. Startups are so hard that you can't be pointed off to the side and hope to succeed. You have to know that growth is what you're after. The good news is, if you get growth, everything else tends to fall into place. Which means you can use growth like a compass to make almost every decision you face. Redwoods Let's start with a distinction that should be obvious but is often overlooked: not every newly founded company is a startup. Millions of companies are started every year in the US. Only a tiny fraction are startups. Most are service businesses—restaurants, barbershops, plumbers, and so on. These are not startups, except in a few unusual cases. A barbershop isn't designed to grow fast. Whereas a search engine, for example, is. When I say startups are designed to grow fast, I mean it in two senses. Partly I mean designed in the sense of intended, because most startups fail. But I also mean startups are different by nature, in the same way a redwood seedling has a different destiny from a bean sprout. That difference is why there's a distinct word, "startup," for companies designed to grow fast....

...Stages of Business Development When we are born we’re call an infant, as we grow from infancy we grow into childhood, from childhood we grow into adolescence, and from adolescence we grow into adulthood. In the same way we grow and develop through the different stages of life so does a business. Every business undergoes a life cycle that is referred to as stages of business development. Hisrich et al., describes the three major stages of business development funding as: the early stage financing, the expansion or development financing, and the acquisition and leveraged buyout financing (Hisrich et al. 2010). Under each major stage there is a smaller stage that a business goes through. Although, there are others such as Churchill & Lewis who claim that there are five stages in which a business moves through; these stages are: existence, survival, success, take-off, and resource maturity (Churchill & Lewis, 1983). This paper is intended to compare and contrast the two authors on stages of business development and revealing the outcome of an entrepreneur’s unsuccessful fate with one company. The Early Stage Financing: Through each stage the business will grow and develop if the entrepreneur uses good decision making strategies, proper planning, financial funding, and hard work. In the early stage Hisrich et al. refers to this stage as the time when entrepreneurs will find that it is the most difficult because they will need seed capital and start-up capital funding to be obtained...

...five categories each human need: Physiology, security, belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization. According to the Flight 011 video, Amanda Shank, the Assistant Store Leader, worked for a company where she did not feel valued. She was told that she was just one of the numbers (Flight 011, 2010). The needs that were not met were a mixture of self actualization and self esteem; her opinions are not valued, therefore, there is no motivation to move up or be successful at the company. If Shank’s managers ensured her that she is valued to the company and gives her positive feedbacks to do better. There might have been a chance for her to be motivated to stay in that company and even move up in the corporate ladder. “Expectancy Theory suggests that motivation depends on two things – how much we want something and how likely we think we are to get it” (Griffin, 2011). The position in retail can be viewed as a temporary job to most. The employees who start from the entry level position usually do not get paid very much. Emily Griffin, crew development, joined Flight 001 in an entry level position. She never realized that she would grow in the company. By having the support of the owners of the company and being very tolerant on her mistakes, she was able to grow within the company. Having the motivations from the owners encouraged her...

In this century, it is especially more difficult for leaders to perform and the rapid globalization thats happened is making it even more challenging. GE uses management science theory to manage and organize its company. The company uses the classical perspective to train its employees into becoming leaders, its uses behavioral management perspective by providing its employees a place where they can go and develop their skills. It has kept up with the contingency perspective by creating new leaders, that are able to advance as globalization changes. ...Discuss how the leadership talent pipeline at Ecolab was critical to executing its business strategy. The CEO and executives got together and came up with a strategy that grows the company. They had to capitalize on success to capture greater share in markets. What this mean is they had to go a step higher than where the company currently stands. I think because they don’t want to get comfortable and stuck and can’t grow. They also are looking for new opportunities for the company to expand. With this being said they are trying to develop a broader range of cleaning and sanitizing products. They want to keep up with competition and exceed them. I think once they got everything done nationally they want to go globally; they probably realize there are more opportunities besides in the U.S. and want to be the first or one of the first to expand globally. Stepping into the health market probably was a stepping stone for Ecolab. HR took the lead to develop and implement a global pipeline program so the company could develop the leadership talent it needed to grow. To summarize, Ecolab had to implement a strategic plan. With all the growth Ecolab would grow double its size and they had to be prepared and ready. Discuss Ecolab’s talent management philosophy. There are several philosophies that are involved in Ecolab talent management. They are: a. Talent is shared: Basically everyone had to step in and help out where needed. They are all there to serve a purpose and it’s...
