...Baber 10/23/12 Beat Literature practice college paper Through out the beat literature you can find recurring themes like religion that make the different stories/poems very similar. The beat generation rejects the American culture that covers up the disasters that are happening. They turned to Buddhism for peace. A big group of people called “the beats” went off the mainstream path and started doing things that were not typical to do during that time period. Some things that were not mainstream was the beats started to practice Buddhism and the way they write their stories and poem for example the style and run on sentences. The members of the Beat Generation rejected mainstream Western traditions because they felt those traditions were covering up what was wrong in 1950s America. Through out the different beat literatures there are many references where the beats reject Western traditions and went off the mainstream path. In the Note on Religious Tendencies by Gary Snyder that the Beat Generation do “experimentation with narcotics […] and intelligent use of drugs.” (Religious Tendencies) This demonstrates the Beats would rather not follow the mainstream path and would rather do different things like try different kinds of drugs and experiment with them. The Beats wanted to push themselves away from being with the mainstream people. They want to do different things even if they were not acceptable. ...type of music Eminem makes. There are many reasons why his music is the way it is. Eminem, A.K.A. Slim Shady, made his debut in 1998. Many people do not understand where Slim Shady comes from. As a child, he had no father, his mother was an alcoholic and a drug addict. Also Eminem moved back and forth from Kansas city to urban Detroit. While growing up, he was picked on and beaten by people all the time. He would get jumped and beat by his mother. All of these instances lead to the type of music he makes today. To add to all of this, his closest relative and best friend, comitted suicide when Slim was in his adolcence. The song I selected is off of Eminems most recent album, The Marshal Mathers LP, and it is titled “The Real Slim Shady”. I chose this song for many reasons. This song mocks the mainstream artists and songs of the time. He makes a pop song which becomes mainstream, in order to show everyone how easy it is to make pop music. Also, his lyrics rhyme and make sense and i think it is amazing how his signing and music just flows perfectly. Eminem has explicic lyrics which help to press the issue at hand and show how strong his feelings are towards this. There is a very simple and defined rhythmic pattern to this song. If you listen to the first few bars without music you will definatly hear the beats. The song is in regular four beat format, also, parts of the song follows the twelve bar patter as well in some instances. The beat is constant throught...

...songs to perform at the concerts, make bell work for her classes, and perform at nursing homes and hospitals. I have been helping Ms.Bellamy with these things for 3 years, even though I haven’t been getting volunteer hours for it. I love to sing, read, and write music. That is why I like helping her with these tasks. Through my high school years I have learned a lot about music, but there is still so much that I do not know. In this paper, I will break down how a music producer goes about making beats, recording singers/rappers, and putting the finishing touches on upcoming songs. The Sound Engineer A sound engineer’s job is to make a beat for the song, set up the recording equipment, record the artist, and put the finishing touches on the song to make it sound the best it can. A sound engineer has to be proficient with different types of recording media, such as analog tape, digital multitrack recorders and workstations, and computer knowledge. There are four distinct steps to commercial production of a recording that a sound engineer is responsible for: recording, editing, mixing, and mastering. Recording is when the engineer physically records the artist rapping or singing. Editing is where the engineer applies auto tune, which makes the voice sound perfect, and tweaks the rhythm and pace of a song. Mixing is where the engineer uses the equalizers and faders to create the overall sound they want in the song. Mastering is when the engineer makes any final adjustments to the...

...through the placement of accents. In most other styles of music in the Western world, accents generally fall on the beats: In jazz, however, accents tend to fall between the beats. If you divide each beat into two parts, the accents in jazz often fall on the second half of each beat. Furthermore, they appear irregularly; you do not tend to see the second half of every beat accented equally: Note the accents in this example occur within the melodic line. One of the characteristics of bebop in particular is the use of short, accented offbeats at the ends of phrases: Another aspect of syncopation has to do with which beats are emphasized. In other types of music, when there are four beats per measure (as is most common), beats one and three are usually stronger than two and four: In jazz, at least since the Swing Era, beats two and four - the "offbeats" - often feel stronger than one and three: All four beats are still played, but beats two and four are accented slightly. This is sometimes referred to as a four-beat rhythm. When two and four are accented especially heavily, it is sometimes called a "backbeat" rhythm: The early jazz musicians often strongly accented beats one and three, however, with bassists and drummers playing almost entirely on these two beats, and pianists or guitarists supplying chords on the offbeats: This is referred to as a "two-beat" rhythm. Modern jazz musicians will...

...the children. The wife tries to intervene to stop the violence, but instead of things calming down, the husband beats the children and the wife at the same time. This is not a movie or a story. This is the real world of domestic violence where wives are beaten up by their husbands with or without a reason. Domestic violence against women is a serious problem that threatens the physical and emotional wellbeing of women, and that negatively affects the quality of their life. The beating of women is a very old story that has been practiced for many centuries. Hundreds of years ago, women were treated as a commodity. They were in fact treated as slaves who had to obey the orders of those males who dominated them. These relationships existed in the male-dominant societies all over the world. Beating women was part of this culture, since the use of violence was applied to remind women that they are to remain under the control of their male masters. Beating is part of the obedience relationship. In most religions, women are expected to obey their husbands. Both Christianity and Islam for example expect and order the woman to obey her husband and to submit to his will. The same is applied to other religions as well. So what happens is that when the woman does not obey her husband or if the husband feels that his wife is not obeying him, he resorts to violence to make things right for himself. This means...

...reciting of rhyming lyrics, time after time set to a beat. The rhyming created by rappers is measured by many to be one of the most cultured styles of poetry. What’s more, these rhymes eventually address confrontational subjects such as sex, violence and socio-political issues. In the film you can see many of the rappers rapping first gained popularity in the U.S. in the 1970s as a kind of street art, like in the interview Ice-T had with an artist named Afrika Bambaata when he talked about the art of hip hop. He spoke about hip hop being a masterpiece and that no one painted it all especially among African American teenagers. During that time many of the young teens who dance over a beat that made you move in a special way from within like just feeling it like no other. It wasn’t until 1979, when the Sugar hill gang released their breakaway hit, ‘Rapper’s Delight, that record producers took notice of this developing musical genre. Once they did, numerous rap acts, including Run-DMC and N.W.A., raised, and rap’s audience began to swell. It wasn’t just African American male rappers...

...SCRIPT WRITING FOR SHORT FILMS: A Practical Guide In 8 Steps Stuart Hepburn Lecturer in Screenwriting and Performance University of the West of Scotland This Screenwriting guide has been written as a Practical Step By Step account of how you can go from being an unproduced filmmaker to a winner, in a few basic steps. We want you to able to write the best five minute screenplay possible. We want you to play with the form, experiment, and most importantly, find your own voice. Introduction: FilmG – The Gaelic Shorts Competition The FilmG Shorts competition is a fantastic opportunity for anyone wishing to take their first steps in making a short film. However, to succeed in the competition, you have to ensure that your film is as good as it possibly can be. Why? Because five minutes is a short time, and any deficiencies in the script will be exposed sooner rather than later. You only have one chance with your script, and if you miss it, you have lost your audience. N.B. These are NOT a set of rules, but simply a suggested strategy for writing your film. THE 8 STEPS 1. Find a small idea 2. Explore the structure 3. Define your world, character and problem 4. Beat it out 5. Write the first draft 6. Find a critical friend 7. Write the second draft 8. Write the third draft STEP 1: Find a small idea It may be stating the obvious, but every short film needs, at its core, an “idea.” This idea can be as ...

...Being a DJ is not as easy as some may think. There are people out there who dismiss being a DJ as just playing one record after another, which is easy to say if one has never witnessed a DJ in action or even tried it themselves. Yes, it may appear to be easy to the untrained eye, but that’s mainly due to the fact that so many professional DJs make it look like a walk in the park. It’s become second nature to them. Imagine having to play for at least an hour to an expectant audience, an audience that has paid good money to have a good time, and being able to give that audience a good time, using just two decks, a mixer, and music that the DJ has chosen, is quite a skill (Barnes). Few DJs are able to support themselves financially with their DJing alone, and on top of that, they have to spend a lot of time and money on their craft. Of course, there are the obvious pluses; the awe-factor, the parties, the party-boys and girls, the ass-kissing. But there is more to it than that. This is an artform, an expression, a way of life (kbein). Many people dream of becoming a DJ, but to really be a DJ, one must buy the right equipment to handle the big-beat tunes. The first thing a DJ needs to do is to determine the type of gear he wishes to use. Building ones first DJ setup can be a difficult task if the person does not know which equipment to buy. There are four typical DJ setups: 1) computer only; it can be very difficult to DJ with only a computer because the DJ would have to remember a number...

...Aesops Fables best in my book. As the second child born and having an older brother I was a very competitive child from the moment I could walk. I knew I could beat my brother at anything and I knew I was much better than he was. Well at least my mind thought that until we actually raced or played a game and he always won. Apparently my mother picked that book on purpose because she saw how frustrated I would get because Ryan would beat me at everything. He would make me so darn mad I just wanted to beat him ONE TIME!!! My mom was able to stay home for most of the week with us so she observed us and figured out that maybe, just maybe I needed to calm down and figure it out before I got so mad. See I was always rushing and getting distracted while my brother and I played because I wanted to be just like him so bad. Now I would never admit this now, but I thought my brother was the coolest kid on the block. I idolized him because he was just awesome. Of course years later when we were teens I heard the story of how annoying he thought I was and he asked my mom if she would take me back where she got me from and leave me there. Nice. That night of reading The Tortoise and the Hare changed everything. Listening to the story of how arrogant the hare was by taunting the tortoise saying he could never beat him reminded me so much of my brother taunting me. As my mother finished reading the story I...

...As the Beat movement was getting started, the musical styling’s of Bebop Jazz was already robust especially in big cities like New York. Bebop Jazz started coming out heavily in the 1940’s and was played in every jazz club across the nation. Bebop was a groundbreaking style of jazz and many well-known musicians like Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Max Roach and Miles Davis were helping promote the new style. While researching famous Bebop musicians, I only came across African American individuals of both sexes. I was really curious as to why this was and I finally found the answer. Jazz originated from New Orleans Louisiana. Many residents from New Orleans are African American and they helped spread jazz throughout the world. Once Bebop Jazz started coming to...
