...The rental heart The rental heart by Kirsty Logan is about a person who is dating a lot of people and gets heartbroken every time they part ways so the main character goes to the heart rental place and rents a new heart to mend their broken heart. Throughout the story we hear about seven different partners, both men and women. The main character is currently dating Grace but looks back to past relationships. We are not told if the main character is male or female, so my interpretation is they could be gender neutral or a woman just like the author, it might be written from personal experience. She dates a lot of people, so she’s desperate for other people’s affection, but she can’t deal with the pain that comes with it, so every time she breaks up with someone she rents a new heart. She’s bisexual because she has partners that are both male and female. We don’t get any information about the setting, but it’s in the future because you can open your chest and switch out your heart for a new one. It’s a first-person narrative so we only see it from the main character's point of view. The rental hearts are a symbol of broken machinery that needs to be replaced, so the broken heart is equivalent to being heartbroken in real life. And opening your chest can be a symbol of opening your heart to other people. The whole story is a symbol of having your heart broken, wishing to replace your heart and to forget bad memories. Her first love was Jacob, and she was very in love with...

...debate at the United Nations about one type of such research, and reviews the positions that various religious traditions have adopted regarding this novel type of research. In several instances the religious traditions seem to have influenced the public-policy debates. There are many ways in which human stem cells can be used in research and the clinic. Studies of the medical use of Embyonic Stem cells will yield information about the complex events that occur during human development. A primary goal of this work is to identify how undifferentiated stem cells become the differentiated cells that form the tissues and organs. Scientists know that turning genes on and off is central to this process. Some of the most serious medical conditions, such as cancer and birth defects, are due to abnormal cell division and differentiation. A more complete understanding of the genetic and molecular controls of these processes may yield information about how such diseases arise and suggest new strategies for therapy. Predictably controlling cell proliferation and differentiation requires additional basic research on the molecular and genetic signals that regulate cell division and specialization. While recent developments with iPS cells suggest some of the specific factors that may be involved, techniques must be devised to introduce these factors safely into the cells and control the...

...I can't believe what you said to me Last night when we were alone You threw your hands up Baby you gave up, you gave up I can't believe how you looked at me With your James Dean glossy eyes In your tight jeans with your long hair And your cigarette stained lies Could we fix you if you broke? And is your punch line just a joke? I'll never talk again Oh boy you've left me speechless You've left me speechless, so speechless And I'll never love again, Oh boy you've left me speechless You've left me speechless, so speechless I can't believe how you slurred at me With your half wired broken jaw You popped my heart seams On my bubble dreams, bubble dreams I can't believe how you looked at me With your Johnnie Walker eyes He's gonna get you and after he's through There's gonna be no love left to rye And I know that it's complicated But I'm a loser in love So baby raise a glass to mend All the broken hearts Of all my wrecked up friends I'll never talk again Oh boy you've left me speechless You've left me speechless so speechless I'll never love again, Oh friend you've left me speechless You've left me speechless, so speechless How? Haaaa-oooo-wow? H-ooow? Wow Haaaa-oooo-wow? H-ooow? Wow And after all the drinks and bars that we've been to Would you give it all up? Could I give it all up for you? ...I honestly don’t even know how to address this. Let’s just do it paragraph by paragraph. Paragraph one: Instead of turning it around on me and saying I don’t like confrontation (which I don’t) why don’t you just admit that you don’t have the guts to say any of this to my face? We both know it’s true. Paragraph two: Again, you just won’t say it to my face. You didn’t do anything to make me leave? Did I not make it clear when I called you out about using your anxiety as an excuse? How about your OCD? What about you making me feel terrible all the time? The touching and pictures making me uncomfortable? Do those ring any bells? Paragraph three: This one makes me laugh. You said you didn’t break, but you had to mend your broken heart. Are you broken...

...Compare how poets use language to present feelings in “The Manhunt” and one other poem (Nettles) In ‘Manhunt’, Simon Armitage uses rhyme to reflect the togetherness of a relationship. He says “After the first phase, after passionate nights and intimate days.” As the poem goes on, the reader can start to recognise that the un-rhymed cuplets show how fragmented their relationship has become. In ‘Nettles’ Vernon Scannell uses elements of nature, the nettles, to portray his keen anger towards the pain his son is going through. At the beginning of the poem, Scannell uses soft ‘s’ sounds to emphasise the soothing of his injured son who has fallen in a nettle bed. The child is presented using emotive language. “It was no place for rest. With sobs and tears the boy came seeking comfort and I saw white blisters beaded on his tender skin. We soothed him till his pain was not so raw.” These soothing sounds emphasises the love his father has for him and how he wants him to recover quickly. The ‘watery grin’ is another emotive description also serving as an opposing image. The way in which Scannell merges the child’s laughter of comfort and relief with the tears of pain from the sting of the nettles shows that the child is being helped by his father to get over the pain. In ‘Manhunt’, there is imagery indicating how carefully she treats her husband. “And handle and hold the damaged, porcelain collar bone, and mind and attend the fractured rudder of shoulder blade.” The point she makes...

...10 tips to mend a broken heart Bess Myerson once wrote that “to fall in love is awfully simple, but to fall out of love is simply awful.” Especially if you are the one who wanted the relationship to last. Mending a broken heart is never easy. There is no quick way to stop your heart from hurting so much. To stop loving isn’t an option. Author Henri Nouwen writes, “When those you love deeply reject you, leave you, or die, your heart will be broken. But that should not hold you back from loving deeply. The pain that comes from deep love makes your love ever more fruitful.” But how do we get beyond the pain? Here are 10 tips I’ve gathered from experts and from conversations with friends on how they patched up their heart and tried, ever so gradually, to move on. 1. Go through it, not around it. I realize the most difficult task for a person with a broken heart is to stand still and feel the crack. But that is exactly what she must do. Because no shortcut is without its share of obstructions. Here’s a simple fact: You have to grieve in order to move on. During the 18 months of my severe depression, my therapist repeated almost every visit: “Go through it. Not around it.” Because if I went around some of the issues that were tearing me apart inside, then I would bump into them somewhere down the line, just like being caught in the center of a traffic circle. By going through the intense pain, I eventually surfaced as a stronger person ready to tackle problems head on. Soon the...

...remember how I silently used to follow their path in spite of knowing that there was a pit waiting ahead of me; but I was too scared to break the silence. I was a slave of a world that never gave me anything, but still, even the thought of getting deserted by it brought shivers down my spine. For them, I was a shoe-sole which they used to dump when they felt that it was worn out. The worst part about it was that, despite of being aware of my true place in their sight, I quietly submitted to them. I was a coward. Any sane man would had questioned himself that why am I doing this to myself? What brings me to this state of this inescapable horror of world? An answer to these questions unveiled the other part of the story. I was flimsy and fragile, I believed that every adversity that exists is capable of crippling me down. Hence I needed others’ back in order to hide myself. However, the bitter reality was that they only used to stand by my side if I acted like their puppet. Then one day the same people whom I feared to lose, abandoned me. I had fallen in the same pit about which I had known about, whilst following them. The cave was dark and scary. I was lost and isolated. Day and night past by, but my miseries did not seem to head to an end. Until one day, I spotted a ray of divine glimmering down the corner of the cave. My heart breathed a sigh of relief on the appearance of this light, but at the same time I was incapable of standing over my broken limbs...

...common theme in today’s Scripture readings is waiting. In Psalm 13, David cries out over and over again, “How long, O Lord? How long must I wait for you to take away the pain in my soul? How long must I wait for you to take away the sorrow in my heart?” I suspect the woman who had been bleeding for 12 years also cried out to God, “How long, O Lord? How long must I go on suffering before you will heal me?” Waiting for God tests the soul, but it is a universal experience of the faithful. Most likely, we will wait for God to answer us many times throughout our lives. Like the woman in Mark 5, we wait for God to heal us of our infirmity and disease. Like the psalmist, we wait for God to heal our broken hearts and anguished souls. We wait for God to mend broken relationships and ignite new relationships. We wait for God to enter into our earthly situations and alter them so that we have more happiness and peace. We wait for God to rescue us from our trials and tribulations. We wait for God to save us from ourselves. You might consider: what are you waiting for God to do in your life? St. Augustine (354-430), who is arguably the most influential Christian theologian in the history of Western Christianity, writing over 400 letters, books, and sermons, and serving as a Bishop in an influential part of northern Africa during early Christiandom was waiting for God to change his heart. Before he became a great spiritual leader, when Augustine was a young man, he was a very successful...

...Don’t you know there are hungry dogs in your street?” There are ravenous dogs in our streets waiting for the first sign of meat Weakness hits them like cold water in the morning reverberating their bodies shaking their bones coming alive as they pounce on the girl whose fragile beating heart echoes through the night as she walks past the dark corners of her town Little girls are warned of these rascals little girls spend their lives avoiding these scoundrels their toe curling screams frozen in their throat ready to be freed at the first sight of movement in the shadows But slim to none are told what to do when the terror hits them “Just scream until someone hears you” they cover her mouth with theirs They tear at her pink flesh with force that breaks cement as their shred her clothing reducing her to her feeble nakedness Ripping her cross from her sacred chest and pluck the promise ring from her little finger promising that if she be a good girl she’ll enjoy it “don’t cry” they say “Stop being such a bitch and take it” As those words pierce through her being wrenching her soul “Mummy, why won’t anyone talk to me at school?” The mother, with a deeper crack in her heart smiles through her tears and says “Well, darling that’s because you’re a special angel and people are scared of people who are different” – “ I don’t want to be different mummy, I don’t want to be special if I don’t have any friends” The mother holds her baby girl as another crack shatters...

One donor can save up to 8 lives and enhance many others with tissue and blood donations. Patients can wait for months, even years on the waiting list, before they either get a transplant or they die waiting The definition of organ donation is the donation of biological tissue or an organ of the human body, from a living or deceased person to a living recipient in need of a transplant. The organs of the body that can be transplanted currently are kidneys, heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, and the intestines. Kidney/pancreas transplants, heart/lung transplants and other combined organ transplants are also performed. Once an organ is taken out of the donor body it has to be used within hours. Most donated organs come from people who have passed away, but living individuals can donate a kidney, part of a pancreas, part of a lung, part of the liver, or part of the intestines. Tissue donations are corneas, the middle ear,...
