...Introduction Water pollution can come from a number of different sources. Many solids, liquids and gaseous substances can cause pollution if they enter the water environment. Common pollutants include chemicals, oil and waste products. Even substances such as milk, which pose no risk to human health, can cause serious harm to the water environment. You must have authorisation if you discharge anything other than clean, uncontaminated water to surface waters or groundwater. Surface waters include rivers, reservoirs and canals, and make up a small percentage of fresh water reserves. Groundwater is all water below the water table. Groundwater makes up the largest available reserve of fresh water. This guide outlines the main causes of water pollution, and when businesses need to apply for surface water or groundwater authorisations. It also describes how to prevent pollution incidents and gives tips on how to store and handle materials responsibly. How can one go about spelling the importance of water in our lives? When we look around and see how water pollution threatens to destroy the Earth, what is our reaction to it? Indifference, perhaps? It is due to this indifference that the world as we know it will soon end. Through a long-drawn, really slow process of torment and torture. It's not just water pollution that spells danger for us, but since water is one of the most crucial resources, without which the very survival of all life on earth will cease to exist, it becomes...

...& LAND POLLUTION Amy Hubbard Ashley Hicks 3/21/2014 Every year in the U.S. factories release over 3 million tons of toxic chemicals into the land, air and water. This hazardous waste causes us to lose over 15 million acres of land every year, it leads to respiratory complications and other health problems and it makes our rivers and lakes too polluted for us to swim in and drink. But factories are only part of the problem of pollution. Pollution is caused by industrial and commercial waste, agriculture practices, everyday human activities and most notably, modes of transportation. No matter where you go and what you do, there are remnants of pollution. What is pollution? Pollution is the introduction of a contaminant into the environment. It is created mostly by human actions, but can also be a result of natural disasters. Pollution has a detrimental effect on any living organism in an environment, making it virtually impossible to sustain life Here are a few facts about land pollution: Every year one American produces over 3285 pounds of hazardous waste Land pollution causes us to lose 24 billion tons of top soil every year Americans generate 30 billion foam cups, 220 million tires and 1.8 billion disposable diapers every year We throw away enough trash every day to fill 63,000 garbage trucks Every day Americans throw away 1 million bushels of litter out their car window Over 80% of items in landfills can be recycled, but they’re not How to Prevent Land Pollution ...

...reactions. Is water natural? Imagine not being able to drink clean water as a result of pollution. Water pollution is a very critical environmental issue and is harmful to the health and life of both humans and animals. Humans around the world must become aware of the dangers and the role they play in the quality of the water around them and improve in the ways water pollution is treated. In this essay, one will ascertain a thorough understanding of some of the causes and some of the dangers of water pollution and ways to prevent it. Even though water is a vital part of human life, many of the causes of water pollution come from humans and their ignorance. To name a few, water pollution is caused by agricultural runoffs, leaking sewer lines, and accidental leaks and spills. Agricultural runoffs are the result of manmade products like pesticides, insecticides, or herbicides and other waste from a large area of land. These products are made to help crops during their growth process and prevent them from being eaten by insects. As a result, these chemicals are washed into waters through natural processes that form increased nitrates and phosphates that are harmful to humans and have a very harsh impact on the environment. Global warming aside, agricultural runoffs are considered one of today’s biggest environmental threats. Leaking sewer lines are another cause of water pollution. Sewer lines are manmade instruments that carry human waste to different industrial plants...

...Air pollution There are many different types of air pollution that effect’s us on an everyday basis. I never realized how many different kinds of air pollution until I have read this chapter. Humans are the main cause of air pollution. The sad part is we continue to pollute. We poison the air every day by throwing out enormous piles of garbage, burning tons of fossil fuels, and driving. Primary pollutants are suspended particle matter, radon, lead, air toxics, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds. The secondary pollutants are ozone and peroxyacetyl nitrates (Environmental Science 11e). These are mixed in with multiple air pollutions. Air pollution is caused by a brown cloud that hangs over the valleys, especially on hot days. That is caused by the ozone. The ozone is a colorless gas that is in the air. When the ozone gets closer to the earth’s surface it is called ground zero. At that point it is very harmful. It is very harmful to the plants, animals and is very highly reactive in the lungs and can cause respiratory disease too. The ozone can cause choking, coughing and stinging eyes. Ground zero chemicals are created by automobiles, trucks, and buses; large industry; utility companies; gas stations; print shops; paint stores; cleaners; and off-road equipment, such as aircraft, locomotives, construction equipment, and lawn and garden equipment (Environmental Science 11e). Also to reduce the risk of this is to reduce...

...major role that play into preventing ocean pollution of plastics and other waste. The goal of sustainable coastlines are to inspire local communities to come together as a whole and help towards hands-on beach cleanups monthly. I was inspired to take on this topic because from a young age I have felt a close relationship with the sea, and I want nothing more for others to treat it with the most upwards respects as well. From this presentation, I hope to inspire others to protect our oceans and give our marine life a safe ecosystem; the same we want for our future generations....

...Smith Demetria February 28, 2012 Water Pollution Capstone/8-2 Water Pollution Over the past few weeks, we have been learning about water pollution. Water pollution is a main cause of what’s killing our animals and other creatures in the lake, ocean or even rivers. Did you know that soap from car when you wash them at home it rolls into the drains and pollutes the water. There are many sources that cause water pollution. Some reasons like chemicals, trash and even oil. Water is one main cause of water pollution. Over the illness and death. In some other countries water supplies are not often drinkable. Recycling is one way to prevent water pollution. Many Americans can recycle from keeping trash out of the waters from preventing killing our animals. It’s also good to recycle because you are reducing more and more things for the population. A litter trap can also help prevent water pollution. A litter trap is just a big machine that sits in any kind of water that may become polluted, so that it will be clean water. A litter trap can come in much different type of shapes, or sometimes even color. Furthermore we as a community can come together and help clean or big world. It’s also good so that many Americans can see first handed on how our world I being treated. One way us as student came together I is when we went to The Wolf River. This project was helping us by letting us Americans see first handed on how this pollution is being a wreck. As us to being vouleenters...

...of Water Pollution in Canada Water pollution in Canada as well as many parts of the world is becoming more of an issue as more waste leaches into water systems. By definition, water pollution occurs when discharges of energy or materials degrade water for other users (“Water pollution”, 2010). As populations continue to grow and more industries develop, pollution of marine and inland waters will continue to rise. There are six categories in which water pollutants are categorized. (“Water pollution”, 2010) Depending on the severity of the concentration, the water body may not be fit for human consumption. The categories in which water pollution are separated include: pathogens, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), nutrients, toxic materials, acidification, temperature changes and controls (“Water pollution”, 2010). The awareness of water pollution should be brought more to the public’s attention as more water supplies are contaminated. Water pollution not only affects the human population, but the wildlife that thrives off the environment. The wildlife drinking contaminated water are suffering adverse health effects that could be further transferred to humans through hunting. Although programs exist to help lessen the affects of pollutants, not enough people are taking the matter seriously and contribute to littering our waterways with garbage. When water is being tested for pollution, there are six possible categories in which pollution can be placed...

...while our lives have gotten easier, we have diminished aspects of the natural world. We live in a time where we don’t understand or contemplate the consequences of what we perceive to be an uninfluential life. While Indiana may not be home to the most terrible of light pollution, it is slowly being affected more and more, due to our necessity for artificial light. There are two main purposes of this paper. One is to inform my audience about the causes, effects, and precautions surrounding the topic of light pollution. The other is to argue for the further research and education on the issue, and to drive people to become involved in the topic. I think anyone can benefit from what I have written here, and if they choose to go forth and use the knowledge provided, then they can help the world benefit from their actions. ...One major contribution to global warming comes from greenhouse gasses.According to the Environmental Protection Agency, "reports that the greenhouse gas emissions emitted directly from our waste being burned in an incinerator or buried in a landfill account for about 3% of the total greenhouse gas emitted in the U.S each year (“EPA Report Shows Progress”).” Our job is to stop the production of greenhouse gasses. As just stated, greenhouse gasses are a major contributor to pollution. These gasses are slowly killing earth (Bachman). According to environmental scientist Michael Kraft, these gasses are eroding the ozone layer, which holds the heat captured in our planet’s atmosphere. People might ask, What does recycling paper-products have to do with global warming? Well, paper products are not biodegradable, and as they dissolve, methane gasses are created. Methane gasses are three times worse than carbon dioxide (Kraft). To clarify, these gases increase due to human pollution. To explain further, the gasses are created by burning trash, and they slow down the process of recycling (Daigneau). Every type of harmful gas has a chemical composition. Greenhouse gasses are composed of carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide. To sum this up recycling helps decrease the rate of global warming and the production of greenhouse gasses because, recycling takes the product and repurposes the product all without any...

...health care. Indicate how you think this problem should be resolved. Pollution is becoming closer to put life on the verge of death. Pollution is the contamination of Earth’s environment with materials that interfere with human health, the quality of life, or the natural functioning of ecosystems. Even though some pollution across the whole world is caused by the forces of nature, the majority comes from every day human activities and advancement in technology. Human contamination of Earth can take many forms such as water pollution, air pollution, noise pollution, soil pollution, solid waste, and hazardous waste. These harmful actions have changed Earth, and they continue to do so today. Among them all, I believe that water pollution is most potent to life on Earth. Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies and any change in water quality that negatively affects any living organism. Water pollution is usually caused by human activities such as the removal of sewage, industrial wastes, and agricultural chemicals. Water pollution is also caused by atmospheric deposition, eutrophication, radioactive waste, and global warming. It affects plants and organisms living in these bodies of water. In almost all cases the effect is damaging not only to individual species and populations, including humans, but also to the natural biological communities and ecosystems. I believe that humans should effectively work on reducing water pollution because water covers...

...Introduction Air pollution is the presence in the atmosphere of harmful gases, liquids, or solids. Air pollution is caused by a number of different types of pollutants. The first type, particulate matter, consists of solid and liquid aerosols suspended in the atmosphere. These arise from the burning of coal and from industrial processes. It hastens the erosion of building materials and the corrosion of metals, interferes with the human respiratory system, and brings toxic materials into the body. The small particles cause chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, emphysema and lung cancer. The second type is sulfur oxides, which come from the burning of coal and industrial processes. Damage to materials, to vegetation, and to the human respiratory system are caused by the acid nature of oxides. The third type of pollutant is carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odourless, tasteless gas against which humans have no protection. Haemoglobin, which is in the blood, combines with carbon monoxide and carries less oxygen to body tissues causing health and heart effects. Some health problems come from the exhaust fumes leaking into the interior of the automobile. Several hundred Americans die from CO poisoning each year. The fourth type is hydrocarbons, which are chemical, compounds containing only carbon and hydrogen. Hydrocarbons also arise from gasoline-powered vehicles and from industrial processes. Hydrocarbons are released when fuel in the engine burns partially....

...Action Plan for Optimal Health and Wellness Rodney Spear Sophia Wells Taneka Johnson SCI/163- Elements of Health and Wellness February 23, 2013 Over the course of five weeks, we have studied the components for living a healthy life. Within the components we learned were six dimensions of health, which include: physical, social, emotional, environmental, intellectual, and spiritual. Utilizing technology, the six dimensions of health were presented weekly via “Game Scape” episodes. This was an informative, engaging, and hands on program that emphasized each of the six dimensions of health through weekly challenges like a common game show of today. After viewing all five episodes in Games cape, the three elements of health and wellness we would want to increase in society are: rewards of physical fitness, nutrition and health management; preventing and treating chronic diseases; and infectious diseases and environmental effects on health. Nutrition and fitness play an intricate part in our overall health management. It is wise to develop and incorporate some type of physical activity in our daily routine for at least 30 minutes. Physical activity can include a light jog, walk, or a gym regiment that fits the needs of the goals a person has set. However, prior to beginning a workout routine you must look into the physical demands and not start to extreme if you had never worked out before. Begin at a slow to moderate pace and work yourself up to more...
