Washington Irving became famous in America for his fine works from The Specter Bridegroom to Rip Van Winkle to The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. These satirical sketches are all based on the local areas in New York where Irving resided. His adventures through life spread the word of his writings and he became one of the first renowned short story writers in Europe. Washington Irving was born in New York, New York on April 3, 1783. His mother, Sarah, and father, William Irving, Sr., had eleven children including Washington. Douglas MacArthur was born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1880. Being raised in a military family had a profound effect on MacArthur as a boy and into adulthood. His father, Arthur MacArthur, was a recipient of the Medal of Honor; an award that would later also be bestowed upon Douglas. His grandfather had served on the United States Supreme Court. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he graduated at the top of his class in 1903. This began his long and illustrious career with the United States Army. After rising through the ranks so quickly that he was promoted to Chief of Staff of the United States Army in 1930, he later decided to retire in 1937. History, however, was not finished writing the story of Douglas MacArthur. He was later called back to active duty in 1941 and was sent to defend the Philippines against the Japanese forces. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his efforts in that campaign. It was also during this time that he was promoted to the rank of five-star general; a rank that has only been achieved by five other men in the army, with the exceptions of George Washington and John J. The evolution of music during the early 1950’s and 1960’s in the Black freedom struggle reflects the evolution of the Civil Rights Movement itself. The progressive thought of the 1950s nurtured new ideas and cultures including the Civil Rights Movement and the fast spread of rock and roll. One such cultural revival occurred after the end of World War II during a time of change, prosperity and restoration. The “Puritan dicta” outlined by Baldwin represents the American ideology before the Second World War. As the first settlers of this nation, the Puritans set the mold for many common American ideologies. In the Puritan view white represented good and black represented evil, including Africans and their culture. After the war, Baldwin states that the former puritanical views of whites will be challenged. Musicians such as Elvis Presley were the first to issue this challenge to white society. Because it took many years for the author, now revealed as Harriet Jacobs, to be properly identified, the work had been dismissed as fictional. Jacobs’ decision to remain anonymous came from guilt and disgrace over the way she was treated while enslaved and the actions she was forced to take to become free, particularly those pertaining to sexual acts. Wanting to be viewed as a “proper Christian” she decided to create the pseudonym name Linda Brent. It was under this name the text was published. In later years, her text has been viewed as an important text, speaking truth to the ears of sentimental novel readers in the north, and calling for action against the cruel institution of slavery.
