In the book "The Lemon Tree" there are many strong opinions taking into order. This is because of how Jews and Arabs grew up, where they grew up, and who they grew up with. For Bashir who is a Young Palestinian adult, he has always taken the side for Palestine no matter what. When Bashir had gotten involved in the Jerusalem Supermarket bombing in 1969 , he was arrested and later brutally tortured in the interrogation rooms. The Palestinians, who were guilty or innocent were treated the same way by the Israiliens. Bashir had felt lied to and abused to a crime where he says he did not commit and blamed for something he is strongly stated against. To dahlia all she could think was if she had made a mistake. "But already she was contemplating a disturbing question: Had she befriended a terrorist?" (Tolan, 167) Dahlias reaction was frustration and hatred because she thought she could simply be friends with an opposing Arab. For many reasons I believe that the house is rightfully owned by dahlia. When Ahmad had first built the home in 1936,and ever since then he had gone through a lot during the years to try and make a permanent home there. Despite his love and appreciation for the house made him want to come back after all the fighting, by law the Arabs who had fled around 1948 were left with nothing. When it became dangerous in al-Ramla, those who had fled became refugees and lost their property and would have nothing to come back to. Years later dahlia as a child came from Bulgaria and found a home in al-Ramla because of the settlements taken place at that time. Once Bashir and his family moved away, al-Ramla was not stable and almost hopeless to the Khairis. How a story is told changes the emotional response of the audience and with that their understanding of the events. Tim O’Brien explores the necessity of ambiguity between fact and fiction in order to create a visceral response to war in his short story “How To Tell A True War Story” which is a chapter in the novel The Things They Carried. O’Brien is able to examine this more thoroughly through the use of irony in title, the narrator’s internal conflict with truth and fiction, juxtaposition of writing styles and the nature motif. Margaret Atwood also investigates how real stories are portrayed in her poem “It Is Dangerous To Read Newspapers” by utilizing juxtaposition. Internal conflict is the basis of this entire story; O’Brien is struggling with how to tell his story and whether the things he experienced really are true to others. The style of this piece is similar to that of a debate with the evidence, or war story, being presented and then explained as to why it is correct.
