The Giver Dbq Essay

...Do you ever wonder what it is like to live in a place where there is no bad but just good in life? Places like that are called a Utopia. What if it means sacrificing what is are part of us? In the book called, "The Giver," the life of a boy named Jonas is completely different than our lives in reality. In their world, there is only good and the people they call "The Elders," eliminated everything that leads to something bad from their community like for example freedom. So is the world of The Giver really a Utopia or a Dystopia? In my opinion, I say the world of the giver is a Dystopia because They have no freedom, Everyone in the community don’t get to live properly, and They don't have emotions nor color in their lives. First off, I will like to state that one of the reason why Jonas’s community is a Dystopia is because no one in their community has freedom. To be specific, they don’t have the right to make choices. According to Document E, It states that “If everything’s the same, then there aren’t any choices! I want to wake...

Engl 50: Discussion Notes

...does he mean by this? Why do you think he placed the quote this early in the essay? Explain (1)I feel that Emerson’s quote “Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to its own string,” Is implying, whatever you set your mind too you can accomplish. “Every heart vibrates to its own Iron string,” Is implying that everyone is different; we go about doing things in different ways, but it doesn’t mean that it’s wrong. (2) I feel he placed this quote so early in the essay because; he wanted to attract the reader’s attention with such a unique passage. He tried grabbing their attention, early in the passage. 2.    In paragraph 4, Emerson says, “it is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own” (as cited in Langan, 2014). What does he mean by this quote? What is his purpose in making this statement? Explain. (1) “It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion”, basically it’s saying that it is easy for other people to justify your life, doing what’s good in the eyes of society. Letting what other people think, affect the way you live your life. “It’s is easy in solitude to live after our own,” Is saying to live in solitude, you can easily live, doing the things that you want to do. (2) To shed light on the situation, of people caring, what other people think. Live by your own path; don’t let people influence what you do. It would be easy living in both situation, but living for your own self-interest, would be easier. ...

Atul Gawande Being Mortality Essay

...My whole life I have heard it said that if you have a disease you look for and use the cure or treatment that has been most effective with cases similar to yours. You would never hear of someone giving up their life and not even trying to overcome what was coming their way. In Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal, he expresses how doctors today are now beginning to focus more on how patients want to spend the rest of their lives no matter what the diagnosis is, if in a state of needing to make a major medical decision. Gawande starts the novel off about how we expect and are known for dying. For example any type of cancer, or illness we can develop throughout our lifetime, not just at old age. He tells us how through his own experiences with medical...

Brave New World Rhetorical Analysis

...“Words can be like X-rays if you use them properly -- they’ll go through anything. You read and you’re pierced.” - Aldous Huxley, Brave New World. Throughout the works of Brave New World, Aldous Huxley slowly transformed all of the themes in a way that explained each character and situation that happened. The tones of the book also helped transform what he was trying to portray in his writings such as miserableness which Bernard felt every day. The most prominent theme that was shown in the book was the internal struggle some of the characters had with having freedom with their inner selves and not being trapped in the confinement of the world they were living in. Internal freedom and self-confinement were something that was unheard of to many...

Character Analysis Of Mae Tuck's Character In 'The Yellow Wind'

...piece of information that you can gather that shows the man in yellow suit is greedy is when he knew where the girl was and would not tell the family unless they gave him half their land. Winnie was confined to the house because there was not much to do in Treegap, and her parents did not want her to get into any trouble. In this text it states, “Winnifred. An anxious voice called from the cottage. Who are you talking to? “ It's just a boy Grandma.” this quote shows that her grandma was anxious and nervous that she was talking to someone and getting herself in trouble. This played a very big role in her Rebellion because she felt trapped like there was someone watching over her the whole entire time. Also she felt like she had nowhere to go and no one to talk to. In the text it states, “But she realized that sometimes during the night, she had made up her mind, she was not going to run away today.” This quote shows that she is at her boiling point and that she feels trapped....

Personal Narrative: My Ungraduated Career

...“You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.” Woodrow “I'm a student of world religion, so to me, it's hugely important to have knowledge and to understand what people are doing.”- Will smith Throughout my time in the Communication department I have learned many things. However, I feel that one of the biggest impacts I have had within my ungraduated career is the certificate program Conflict Analysis and Resolution. I chose the first quote due to the skills we acquired throughout the program. When I first heard about the program I thought to myself its only 12 credits how hard can this be? Little did I know then, just how much these twelve credits would change my view of life? I feel like my purpose in life is to help others, and how you ask I do not know that quite yet but I am hoping to get that situated before I embark on my next journey in life. The second quote applies to my journey in many ways as well. But all in all I owe it to our great professor Dr. Shailor who as times slips in a little politics and catholic faith. ...understood just how important reading was let alone the impact reading would later have on my life. During my years in elementary school I had such a rough time just trying to understand anything. My parents would take their time and help teach me to read. That wasn’t the best of experiences as I fought with everything I had to not have to learn. Later once I hit middle school and then high school things weren’t so tough for me. I was reading but only what I had to read and nothing more. At this point in my life I still thought that reading was pointless and a waste of time. It wasn’t until 2005 that reading would start to become a daily part of my life. It wasn’t long before I had realized that books had become my best friend, and I would always have a best friend and somewhere to turn when things turned sour from time to time. For many years I made many new friends within the books that I read. Then just like a long distance relationship I knew that they were there but never talked to them or in this case read them for another couple years. In 2010 I was given a very precious gift and from the very beginning before my daughter was even born I would read to her. Even to this day I am still reading to her with one big difference she is learning at an early age that books can be your best friend and that they make for a great way to pass the time if you need to. I don’t want my daughter to have to learn late in life just how important books can and will be like I did. I know that...

Legalizing Concealed Weapons

...instances where I wish a legalized weapon was in arms reach. There was an instance about 7 years ago where my little brother and I were the only two in the house and an intruder broke in while we were there. No one was hurt or injured but it was traumatic for two children as it happened right after my mom had went to work. I would have felt more secure and confident if I was to know that a legalized weapon was around for our protection. Through research, why concealed carry laws should be implied into every state's legislation will be debated and each point of view will be expressed. As this topic applies to everyone, every citizen should have the opportunity to exercise their rights. Many people are victims to crimes that they could have gotten away from. How many rape cases could have been avoided? How many school shootings could have been prevented before the shooting began? All of the latter mentioned cases are incidents that could significantly reduce our crime rate if concealed carry laws were in effect in every state. Also included in this essay will be a viewpoint of the opposing side and how that side is not all the way accurate. Using my research and focusing on how carrying concealed weapons aids our Americans I will be able to shrink my topic to a point where I can talk about a variety of things that are not too broad to where I do not have enough information to make a solid argument. Within these two subjects, statistics and reasoning as...

Truthful Lies: America’s Imbalance

...by mankind.” As a child, I played a game called gossip. It was usually at a slumber party and required all the participants to sit in a circle. The first person would whisper a secret to the person beside them. That person then whispered the secret to the person beside them, but told it in their own words. The last person in the circle was to announce the secret, as they heard it. I was always astonished, not only by how much the story had changed, but by how excited the participants were to tell it. My grandmother used to say, “Be careful what you say, because once the words are out, you can’t take them back.” Although she was nobody famous, she had a firm grasp on the impact words could have on a person’s life. When I think of a drug, I think of something that changes a person, either physically, mentally, or both. Think about how you feel when you hear, or read something about another person. Your reaction is based on many things. Suppose you are a person, with little means, who struggles every day. One day you hear that someone who is not only famous, but wealthy has lost all their money. You don’t even know this person, but those words have somehow made you feel better. It is almost like vindication, for all the times you have had to struggle. Those words have changed you mentally. Would you have felt the same way, if the person was your neighbor? Education: a Means to Enrich People’s Lives

...only do I feel like I learn very little from these courses but I become frustrated with them because I feel they will not help me as a future educator. I also feel that the reason the university requires its students to take these courses are not to enrich the students lives but to increase the revenue’s that it receives from these students tuition. This then leads me to not take these courses as serious as I should and I gain very little from them. After reading the article Issue 74: Who Are You and What Are You Doing Here? by Mark Edmundson, I have come to realize that because of the higher education system that is in place students, professors and universities have become complacent with this lack of student enlightenment that these institutions provide and not one of these groups are making the changes necessary for the betterment of the students’ education. Now, there is an argument to be made to say that universities are educating students in a great way. This argument is based off education being defined as “the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction” (Google). By this definition, professors, who simply lecture about the topic of the class and ask the students to regurgitate the information that is presented, are educating their students in a successful manner. These students then leave their respected universities ready for the work place, which is what many people deem the purpose of college. However, to understand Mark Edmundson’s article you must look...

Death of My Sister

...Death of my Sister November 24, 2012 This is my story of how one single event changed my life forever. This event changed how I express myself on an everyday basis and how I interact with others around me. Sometimes I feel so hurt and broken that I cannot even enjoy my life or my family. This one single event took all innocence away from my nephews and my children. In tragic times you normally see families come together, but this has pushed my family apart. I have lost all faith that the world we live in is good and that we can always rely on someone near us. I have lost all faith in the spirits above us. I am broken now and live in a dark place. How do you help yourself to see the light again? How do you ever enjoy life and move forward? I look back on my life and I wonder if I am being punished for feeling so much joy. I will never forget nor be happy on the Fourth of July again. The Fourth of July is about celebration and independence; little did I know this would be the worse day of my life and destroy who I am forever. It is hard to keep your health in order when you live in a state that your whole family moves away from and leave’s you and your children alone. My sister Christy lived in California with her three boys: Wyatt (four), Garrett (two) and Leo (five months). She had been dealing with depression and alcoholism for the last few years now and was seeing a doctor, but Christy’s disease was never under control. Change

...sometimes "What You Wants Turns Out to be Not What You Wanted". In such cases in spite of having complaining attitude lets welcome the new changes in life. Don't regret from past. Learn from it and become more vigilant in making a choice in future. In this Agile world, most people have fear from change, not in the sense that change is negative, but because it is unknown. Therefore, the comfort zones that have been established will no longer be applicable. In personal or professional life try to be the best version of yourself. For example people you thought were going to be there forever aren't there anymore. It does not means that people change. It’s just that there role changes according to time or situation. As quoted by Mahatma Buddha “ Everything changes, nothing remains without change”. Life is just like weather sometimes too bad to resist and sometimes pleasant to enjoy. If we don't change, we don't grow. If we don't grow, we are not really living. Don't be afraid of changes, you may lose something good but probably end up gaining something much better. It is true. The only constant in life is change. From the day that we are born we em-barque on the journey of endless change, better known as the journey of life. Our lives are one big cycle with a beginning and end-point, sub-divided into many smaller phases. Each phase is further sub-divided into smaller phases or chapters every person goes through a numerous amount of different phases in their lives. The end...

Student

...The person that past was important in my life. This event left me with questions that were similar to Metaphysics. One of the questions I had in particular dose a person have a soul and what happens when a person dies. The answer as silly as this sounds, came tome in a dream. After I lost this person I had a dream a few days later. In the dream it was if I could see myself dreaming something like an outer body experience. I could see my self asleep dreaming but it was clear I was not awake. Also in my dream was the person I had lost came to me and let me know they where okay and not to worried about them. I believe my soul had contact with the soul of the decease. This also answers my second part of my question. I feel that when the body dies the soul lives in two places. The first is the soul lives on in the memories and lessons that where also past on by the individual. The other place is the soul lives in heaven with the divine. When I was child I also had a short stint in catholic school. The one thing I can remember is the teaching regarding free will and living your life by the way god intends you to live. I feel that people have free will that can be seen in freedom of choice a person has in the decisions they make day today. I also feel that people are not judge by the choices or mistakes a person made, makes them good. It is the choices we make today right now that determines how good a person is. The next question I had was introduce to me by a friend in high school...
