How to Deal with Procrastination
Procrastination is a bad habit. Procrastination is a term for psychological disorder that is characterized by people who delay a task or things that have to be done. People who exhibit symptoms like this are called procrastinators. In fact, according to one study, “80% to 95% of college students engage in procrastination, approximately 75% consider themselves procrastinators, and almost 50% procrastinate consistently and problematically” (Steel 65). Procrastination happens a lot in college students, and the amount of students who become consistent procrastinators are about half of the total of students. According to Statistic Brain Research Institute, there are 17,487,475 enrolled students in the United States (“College Enrollment Statistics”). It means, there are 8,743,738 students who become consistent procrastinators during this year. Although most of people think that procrastination seems to be unimportant, it can have a bad effect if the students procrastinate frequently. Procrastination is caused by procrastinators’ feelings that dominate the control and task characteristic. However, time management, understanding time, and rewarding themselves can solve the procrastination.
Procrastination can be considered a common phenomenon in our life. Everyone procrastinates sometimes during their life, but not everyone is a consistent procrastinator. Procrastinators are the people who only think about the present, ignoring the lessons from the past. They do not think about their future, care more about themselves, and maximize the ease and pleasure of the current moment (Urban). Since everyone has different thought processes, there is huge difference between procrastinators and non-procrastinators. Non-procrastinators usually use their brain rather than their feelings;

With only approximately two weeks left until orientation, Carl discovered that essential aspects of the hiring process had not been completed, manuals were not prepared, and the training room was booked until the next month. As a result of neglect and procrastination, the efforts of conducting an employee orientation has undergone unanticipated delays. ...and how I would like to come up with a strategy to solve the issue. I will briefly discuss my problem that I’m having in my day-to-day life. Identifying what kinds of information I can use to help in solving this issue and where I can get this information from. I will be going over the process that I will use to evaluate the information that I have gathered. The types of things I will consider as I evaluate the information. Last, I will explain how to use the information I have gathered to resolve the problem or issue at hand. The problem or issue that I am having in my day-to-day life is procrastination. I don’t know why, but for some reason it’s hard for me to get started on any task. I found myself getting very distracted at times and usually wind up avoiding the situation. I think I work better under pressure so I tend to put things off until the last-minute hoping that the time crunch will push me to get the task done. When I know I have to get something done I usually think I have plenty of time and start to blow things off. An example of this is a trip that I have been planning to San Diego in order for me to obtain a birth certificate. My birth certificate is needed in order for me to apply for jobs and other needed benefits. If I did this by mail the process would be more complicated in which it would make me even lazier. I keep pushing this off, though it is very important, as a last task to get done. Another example of my procrastination is my...

...Strategy To Find A Solution For Procrastination Dakota Swanson GEN/200 20th September 2010 Research Strategy To Find A Solution For Procrastination “Procrastination is the Thief of Time; Year after year it steals, till all are fled” (Young, 1742, Night Thoughts I. 18). A more detailed definition, “Procrastination, the habit of putting tasks off to the last possible minute, can be a major problem in both your career and your personal life. Side effects include missed opportunities, frenzied work hours, stress, overwhelm, resentment, and guilt. The behavior pattern of procrastination can be triggered in many different ways, so you won't always procrastinate for the same reason. Sometimes you'll procrastinate because you're overwhelmed with too much on your plate, and procrastination gives you an escape. Other times you'll feel tired and lazy, and you just can't get going” (Pavlina, 2001, Overcoming Procrastination by Steve Pavlina). Procrastination like any other problem can be controlled if not solved. There are various ways in which one can begin the curative process. It is common knowledge that the first step to recovery is admittance of the problem, and then making that conscious effort to remedy that setback. To make that step, you must identify the root causes of your procrastination, how often do you procrastinate, what tasks you procrastinate more for whether is if for job related tasks or personal engagements, and the consequences. How it affects you emotionally...

The world has long regarded procrastination as a self-handicapping and dysfunctional behaviour but if we look into the books of history, procrastination was not considered a bad thing. The Greeks and Romans considered it as a noble thing and the rulers/Kings were expected to sit around and literally do nothing till something needed their attention. The idea of procrastination being a bad thing developed in the Puritanical era and is still considered the same. In the present study, the authors proposed that not all procrastination behaviours either are harmful or lead to negative...

Procrastination

...Procrastination Procrastination is the act of intentionally putting off or not doing something that should be done. Most people deal with some form of procrastination in their lives and this is considered normal. However, delaying essential tasks and putting less important things ahead of them can cause negative consequences. Stress and anxiety are often a direct result of procrastinating as well as a lack of confidence and low self-esteem. Guilt is also associated with procrastination because of the perception of others and the potential disappointment of family and friends based on the lack of success. This character trait causes problems in all age groups and in many areas of life including college students and their achievement of educational goals. Unfortunately for me, procrastinating is a characteristic that affects me as a student and has impacted me greatly. There are many ways to sabotage academic success, but a guaranteed way is through procrastination. Procrastinators self-destruct by making choices that hinder their progress and achievement. This characteristic causes students to look for things to distract them and get them off task. Checking email, texting, and scanning social media like Facebook and Twitter are prime examples of distractions that force students to delay important responsibilities. Procrastinators often lie to themselves. Many are convinced that they will feel better about completing an assignment later or that they will work better...

Procrastination

...Procrastination is something that we all do to a certain degree, but it is also something that we rarely try to change or work on because it does not seem as important as other issues. I choose to write on this topic for this very reason. If I do not work on it I will continue to procrastinate and this issue will not be addressed. Procrastination is also hindering my school and work performance to a fault in that my grades and work performance could be much better if I just completed assignments diligently and on time. This is also an issue of organization for me because when I do not do things on time then assignments and deadlines pile up. When I decided to deal with my procrastination I did not realize how difficult and demanding it would be. For example I had to make a list of all the things I needed to get done that day and the list was long, but the tough part was when I finished with the items on the list it was again time to make another list, and so on and so forth. So the process, at the beginning, was very overwhelming. However, having a schedule prevented things like homework and work deadlines from piling up and leading to reduced performance. For this project I picked up the self-help book The Procrastinator’s Handbook by Rita Emmett which not only discusses methods to reduce procrastination but also gives a deeper explanation for why we procrastinate. The first point Emmitt stresses is what she calls “tackling the dread” which essentially means understanding why...

Procrastination Gen200

...Paper A problem that I have identified in which I have in my academic life is procrastination. Procrastination has been an issue for me since my years in high school and it is time I develop a strategy to deal with this “catastrophic” issue. In this paper I will develop a research strategy to find a solution for my academic procrastination and will incorporate these solutions into my academics. Have you ever received an assignment or project and you are given a few days to complete it. You tell yourself “ok, I am going to start working on the assignment tomorrow”. Now tomorrow has come and you know you have to start working on your assignment but then you’re going “well I still have two more days to do it” so you tell yourself “ok I will start tomorrow because I still have another day before it’s due”. Next thing you know it’s the night before your assignment is due and now you are stressing out, pressing for time, and up past midnight trying finishing your assignment. This what I have been doing for the last three years in school, waiting till the last minute to start a paper or study for exam. By me procrastinating when it comes to school work I feel pressured, stressed, and also feel as if I am not creating work that is to the best of my ability, this has caused me to receive grades that I was unsatisfied with and really has just made me an average student. I’m not alone when it comes to procrastination; about 50% of students procrastinate in a consistent and problematic fashion...

...Procrastination: A PUPian Student Must Overcome By: Elloso, Princess L. Yan, Rochelle C. Chapter I : Problem and Background A. Background of the study When you look for the meaning of “procrastination” in the dictionary, it says that “it is an act of putting something off until later”. Obviously it is same for the Filipino term “Mañana Habit” means “mamaya na lang”. This habit is something we have learned from the Spaniards. And as we can see, most of the students do this habit. How it works? First of all, you need to do something NOW, but then you decide to do it later. As a result of the delay, you end up not doing it. Now, you tell yourself or somebody that you will do it TOMORROW. And tomorrow comes, the same cycle happens. Procrastination is finding the most difficult way of doing something. It’s jumping from one idea to another. Instead of starting your work, you procrastinate. You’re looking out the window, you’re staring at your neighbour, you’re watching television and you’re wasting your time instead that you have finish your work. In Psychology, there is this thing called “Present Bias”. It means being unable to grasp what you want. A change over time, what you want now isn’t the same thing you will want later. Procrastination is all about choosing WANT over SHOULD because you don’t have a plan for those times when you expect to be tempted. You must be depth at thinking about thinking because there will always be a war on your brain. B. Statement...

...ESSAY DANA SCOTT COMM/215 November 10, 2014 MARY THOMAS WHY YOU SHOULD NOT PROCRASTINATE There are many ways to avoid success in life and the number one cause is procrastination. Procrastinators sabotage themselves. They put obstacles in their own path. They actually choose paths that hurt their performance. First, we must ask what exactly procrastination is. According to dictionary.com, procrastination, pronounced proh-kras-tuh-ney-shuhn, is the act or habit of procrastinating, or putting off or delaying, especially something requiring immediate attention. If you still do not understand, I will put it in a sentence for you. “He was smart, but his constant procrastination led him to be late with almost every assignment.” According to Joseph Ferrari, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at De Paul University in Chicago, twenty percent of people identify themselves as chronic procrastinators. For them procrastination is a lifestyle. It cuts across every aspect of their life. They do not pay bills on time. They miss birthday parties and other important activities. They get bad grades in class. They file income tax returns late. They leave their Thanksgiving dinner shopping until the night before thanksgiving. They are always a day late and a dollar short. Theres more than one flavor of procrastination. People procrastinate for different reasons. According to Timothy Pychyl, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at Carleton University in Ottawa Canada, he identifies...

Procrastination

...Strategies to Solving Procrastination Procrastination is an epidemic among college students, and is an issue that most would like to resolve in their day to day lives. Procrastination is loosely defined as intentionally putting things off that you would rather not do in the present. William J. Knaus, states in his article, “Procrastination, Blame, and Change” that procrastination has been around since the beginning of time, and also cites that even Benjamin Franklin included in his 13 virtues: “Resolve to perform what you ought. Perform without fail what you resolve” (Knaus, 2000). In order to solve the problem of procrastination, as well as any other problem, college students should follow a few steps: Identify and select the problem; Analyze the problem; Generate possible solutions; Evaluate solutions; Put the Solution to work; Evaluate the solution; and finally, Apply what you learn (Carter, Bishop, & Kravitz, 2007). We have already identified the problem; procrastination. The next step for a college student would be to analyze why they procrastinate. An online handout, published on The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (n.d.) website, lists several reasons why we procrastinate, such as fear, perfectionism, and simply stated, because it works. Let us first address fear. Fear of failure is where we feel we are inadequate, and our work will reflect that, therefore we don’t even try. With fear of success, one fears that if they start working at their full capacity...

Solve a Problem

...stage of the process a person should become accustomed to the habit of constantly searching for a challenge. It is important to note that a person can be creative only in response to challenges that he or she perceives (p. 105). The second stage in the creative process is expressing the problem or issue. The objective of this process is to find the best expression of the problem that will provide the most helpful ideas. A common mistake made in this stage of the process is seeing the problem from only one perspective and therefore closing oneself off to other points of view (p. 106). The third stage in the creative thinking process is investigating the problem or issue. The objective of this stage is to obtain the necessary information to deal with the problem or issue. This can be done by searching experiences and observing them for information pertinent to the problem at hand. The fourth stage of the process is producing ideas. “The objective of this stage is to produce enough ideas to decide what action to take or what belief to embrace (Ruggiero, 2009, p. 106). Once a person has found enough ideas, the next step is to decide which idea seems to be the best in finding a solution for the problem. Procratination

...Procrastination is defined as a habit of putting things off until the last minute. Many things can cause procrastination. For instance, when an individual is to feel stressed, overwhelmed, laziness, a lack of motivation, lack of discipline, poor time management habits, lack of skill, and perfectionism. All these things play a key role in why people procrastinate. When a person feels stressed, they do not work productively. Many people become stressed due to their heavy work loads, and they do not take enough time out for leisure time. Leisure time helps the body and mind to be at ease, this will help individuals to be more productive. Many people believe that when a person feels stressed they will use procrastination as a way to cope with everything that is going on in their lives. Other times, the individual have too many items on there to do list, and they become overwhelmed. Individuals who become overwhelmed usually have too much to do and little time to do them in. A good way for one to eliminate these overwhelming feelings is to go over the items that are on these lists, and cut as much out as they can, or prioritize things in order of there importance. According to (2009), “It's been shown that the optimal work week for most people is 40-45 hours. Working longer hours than this actually has such an adverse effect on productivity and motivation that less real work gets done. This is especially true for creative, information age work.” Now laziness is just a habit people...

He will take over with the kids so I can do my assignment for class. If that is not possible then I will look at my schedule for the week and extend my school time throughout the week. I do what I can to not intrude on my family time. Having this schedule not only applies to my family, it also applies to my academics. There are certain periods of time during the day that I can sit back and work on assignments. Knowing when and how to do these assignments is extremely important in keeping the flow of the schedule consistent. A time and place must also be set when dealing with specific team learning activities. Other students can only work on the project during times they have available.
