Jacob Riis 'How The Other Half Lives'

...Steele Clement Mr. Ashby AP US History 2 December 2014 People are not aware of the harsh living conditions that poor immigrants in the slums faced in the 1890’s. Jacob Riis showed how awful the slums were in hi 1890 novel How The Other Half Lives. In many different chapters, he writes about the harsh living conditions and vacational options. Riis focuses each chapter on a different ethnic group. These groups include the Jewish, Blacks, and Italians. Italians were “welcomed as a tenant who “makes less trouble””.(Riis Ch5, Par 1) THe Italians were not troublemakers in comparison to the Germans, however they were very humble. They took commands from the owners of their run down houses without arguing. One of those examples being robbery. The...

Jacob Riis How The Other Half Lives Summary

...The 1890 book How the Other Half Lives by Jacob A. Riis, sought out to expose the horrific conditions that over one million immigrant workers and their families faced in the tenements of New York's East Side slum district. A citizen's movement prompted by the guilty consciouses of the middle class resulted in the creation of the Board Of Health, that passed the 1867 "Tenement House Act". The act mandated the cutting of 46,000 windows into interior rooms solely for ventilation purposes. These renovations were met with opposition from tenement owners as well as by tenants. In many accounts tenants had to be physically dragged out from cellar apartments by police officials. In spite of the Tenement House Act, many renovated buildings had no apparent improvements . New tenements that were constructed after the act still had floor plans that left rooms dark and dank and, over crowding was still permitted. The air inside the tenements were described as " ...fouler than...

Gist

...David Terrick II Gist 2 12/03/13 Mirror With A Memory Throughout the early 1900’s, poverty was a great problem among many immigrants in The United States. Immigrants were forced to live in deplorable conditions, many of which, were in the slums of urban centers across the nation. This plague was relatively unknown to the middle class and rich who lived in the surrounding areas of urban centers. While reading “Mirror With A Memory”, Davidson and Lytle explain the work of journalist Jacob Riis and his effect on bringing the conditions of the impoverished to the rest of the country. Riis is viewed as both a great photographer, and as an upstanding citizen for his fight against poverty. Jacob Riis published “How the Other Half Lives”, a collection of photos and articles explaining and showing visual evidence of poverty in American slums. He explains the filthy, crammed, living conditions as well as the serious spread of disease. He talks of personal encounters as he would sneak shots of 13 men and women packed tight into a room only 13 feet across. Riis had the mindset that it was his personal duty to bring light to the rest of the public about the poor. I personally view Jacob Riis as an unsung hero. I do not believe he received nearly enough credit for what he had done. Riis devoted his life to changing the way the poor immigrants lived. Bringing visual evidence of the matter forced the public to become aware of the deplorable conditions, and make a...

How to Live Longer?

...How to live longer? An analysis of the impact food consumption and healthcare may have on life expectancy. Econ413 SP2011 Introduction Life expectancy is important not only to individuals but also to the nation. To individuals, longer life expectancy gives people more time in their lives to do things they want and gives them opportunity to see their children and grandchildren grow up. To the nation, studying life expectancy helps the government plan for pension benefits and contributions. I want to analyze the impact of food consumption on life expectancy because today people care about eating healthier and America’s eating habit has been criticized for the consumption of too much unhealthy food. In order to measure the country’s eating habits, I used data over the past 40 years that includes annual meat consumption, fish consumption, milk consumption, fruits and vegetable consumption and etc. I will analyze the life expectancy over 1970-2008 and the corresponding food consumptions over that time period. In addition to eating habits, I believe that the nation’s healthcare spending and GDP are important determinants of life expectancy. Excluding them will result in a biased model. Therefore, I also included healthcare and GDP as independent variables in my analysis. Prior Research and Theory In the past few years, life expectancy and its determinants have been widely discussed in economics. In the U.S., life expectancy rapidly increased in the past century and led...

How to Live a Sustainable Life

...How to live a sustainable life Summery In “Sustainable Living at Home in Australia” Linda Cockburn tells us about how she and her family moved and lived in their backyard for 6 months, because they wanted to appreciate life more and they wanted to learn for good, that material goods isn’t the only thing in life. In the 6 months they lived in the backyard they used the yard and animals for food and power. They drank the rainwater and they used the sun for energy. Linda Cockburn asserts that they learned a lot during that period. For example they learned to mix their own shampoo, and make their own toilet paper. After the course where the family lived outside, Linda Cockburn published her book “Living The Good Life”, which is about how the family discovered things they never knew before, and how much happier they became. On the top of the event a lot of people have sent Linda Cockburn praise and said that the book has helped them a lot. Outline All of the three texts are about how to live a sustainable life, but it is different whom the texts are written to, and they tackle the subject in different ways. The first text questions, how necessary it is to use electronic devices and consumerism, this much, in our everyday. So many people are addicted to their phones, and so many people can’t go a day without buying anything. It’s only 50 years ago that people barely knew about these things. The author, Leo Babauta, reminds us about how important it is to remember, not to...

How to Live a Happy Life

...January 14, 2013 How to Live a Happy Life I once read from the very popular Reader’s Digest that being happy can add seven up to ten more years in your life. From that time on, I have developed my own guide to a happy life. Although we are never free from troubles, we can always maximize our happiness. Well, there are so many articles on the internet, magazines and books presenting thousands of ways to be happy and reading all those can sometimes be tiring. To spare you from that, I have narrowed it down to four simple and general rules. So if you want to live those ten more years, all you’ve got to do is listen and pay attention. First on my list is to appreciate the little things like the sunshine or the rain; the leaves and the flowers; a nice cup of coffee or tea; and most importantly, yourself. For it is when we appreciate these little things, we become contented and eventually learn to become more grateful of the bigger things life has to offer us. Be thankful like a child and you’ll be surprised of the many great things the world can show you. Now, try to remember what you felt the first time your parents told you you’re having a trip to this really cool place. You were excited and that even made your spirits high. It’s that same feeling when you try something new. So, get excited and do something that can get you thrilled. Go out, explore out of the ordinary stuff, meet new people and have fun. Travelling will never fail you; getting lost can sometimes help you...

How We Ought to Live

...How we ought to live: Role of Religion and Government Abstract When one looks beyond the fundamental questions about life, it is pretty obvious that “how we ought to live?” follows whatever conclusion one reaches about their existence. This is an attempt to answer questions like: How shall we live? What shall we live for, if anything? How can we decide right from wrong? I look at the roles Religion and Government in showing us how we ought to live. When one looks beyond the fundamental questions about life, it is pretty obvious that “how we ought to live?” follows whatever conclusion one reaches about their existence. This is an attempt to answer questions like: How shall we live? What shall we live for, if anything? How can we decide right from wrong? Without requiring us to rely on blind faith alone, while using lessons from faith and rational thoughts. History Socrates (469-339 BC) used what we know today as dialectic way of answering Philosophical questions about life. This involved asking and answering probing questions in order to arrive at something that could be considered true. Unfortunately he was put to death for failing to acknowledge the gods that the city acknowledged and for introducing new deities. Aristotle (384-322 BC) thought that human fulfillment came as we order our lives around developing and expressing moral and intellectual virtues, such as courage, wisdom, generosity, and understanding. In order to do this, we must be mentally active. That...

How Should I Live

...How Should I Live? With each decision, we constantly ask ourselves, “Is this the right decision?” Sooner or later, we are all presented with the task to choose between what is right and what is easy. In one of my favorite novel series, Harry Potter, Albus Dumbledore says to Harry, “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” (Rowling 1998, 219) This is true. Our decisions in life, our struggles, selections, and choices, are the bindings to our stories; ultimately holding together what makes us who we are, just as Dumbledore said. How should we live our lives? It is not a question that can be simply stated in a few words. One word out of the posed question is the main subject- “live”. What does it mean to truly live and what is the best way to do it? I think it is a mixture of many things. However, out of many lifestyles that involve moral behavior, I think the life of an altruist is an extremely honorable one, and it is one by which I want to model my life. In order to do good, one must know evil. So, what is evil? What makes good people do bad things? According to Philip Zimbardo, “evil consists in intentionally behaving in ways that harm, abuse, demean, dehumanize, or destroy innocent others -- or using one’s authority and systemic power to encourage or permit others to do so on your behalf” (Zimbardo 2007, 5). Throughout history, we have seen multiple examples of evil acts; from the Rwandan Genocide to Abu Ghraib to the actions...

How to Live a Happy Marriage

...It is very well known today that: neither men nor women are in a hurry to get married. Women have now become more independent, they do not want to do all housework and raise their children, or sacrificing their career growth, is one of the causes of the changes in family formation. A happy marriage may be built only on love, tolerance, mutual understanding, equality, and respect. The problem is important because both husband and wife are now in many cases on equal terms. More and more women demonstrate higher levels of education than men, more and more women compete with men, holding leadership positions in business, politics and social life. Now a lot of women are the financial support to the family. As the result, women become materially independent. They are not materially tied to a family anymore. When they get married, they enrich their world that is now built on kinship, love, safety, quality leisure time activities in which all family members are involved. A family develops a collective feeling of interconnectedness, which is opposed to loneliness. Joy and duty, love and care, discipline and kindness - all these are taken together in a family as a pillar of stable social development. I have talked to married people in search of a "happy family" recipe. I want to share some of my findings with you. A happy marriage is based on intimacy and commitment. It is a bond that outgrows passion as the feature of romantic love. It is a bond that is based on mutual respect and...

How Technology Impacts Our Lives

...Technology has had a big impact on the way people lead their everyday lives. The cell phone, I believe, has had the biggest impact on the way we navigate through our daily tasks. There are an estimated 180 million smart phone users in the United States today. Personal relationships, the hours spent working away from the office, and how people pass time are all very different than they were 30 years ago. Personal relationships, in my opinion, have had the hardest hit when it comes to the advancement of smart phones both bad and good. People take less time out of their day to place a phone call to a loved one and send a text message instead. Dating is also driven by applications that we can download to our smartphone. A person can decide whether or not they want to go on a date with someone based on a profile picture. Applications such as Face time and Skype, on the other hand, have opened a door to a more convenient way to communicate with someone that may be too far away to go visit. With the advancement of cell phones, it has become harder for people to not work while off the clock. Email, videoconference applications, and simply being able to make a phone call from anywhere have given all of us access to our work any time of day that we want. This advancement has, however, has created pathways for new moms. This allows mom to stay at home and care for her family while allowing her to access her work and continue down her career path. Applications on cell...
